    3. Joseph Yard Province Son of Jesse and Celia (Spencer) Provance. Born Marietta, Washington County, OH, on July 18, 1825. Died April 10, 1885 in Lodi, NE. Buried Riverside Cemetery, Custer County, NE. He was shot and killed by Stephen B. Long in a dispute over a land claim. Stephen Long was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in the Penitentiary. He was pardoned after serving 2 years, due to ill health, and died about a month thereafter. The complete story can be found in "Pioneer History of Custer County, Nebraska" by S. D. Butcher. Joseph Yard married Permilia Jane Stephens on March 23, 1848 in Fairmont (other sources say Fairview), Marion County, WV. She was born in Green County, PA, on December 3, 1829, a daughter of Samuel Stephens and of Margaret Stump. She died May 30, 1917, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.
