Searching for information about Eliza STUMP. According to census records she was born circa 1823 in Ohio. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Maryland. On 22 Feb. 1864, in Coshocton Co., Ohio, Eliza married my gr gr grandfather, George E. WARD (He was a widower.) I don't know if STUMP was Eliza's maiden name or her surname from a previous marriage. From a letter that has survived the last 131 years, we know that Eliza had a sister, Mary A. ESWORTHY. In 1868 Mary (widow of John) was living in Hopewell Twp., Muskingham Co., Ohio with her three children - Melinda, Mary and Joseph. It is possible that Eliza and Mary had a sister named Salemy (Salemna) who was married to Thomas CARTNAL. In 1870 the CARTNAL family (including a daughter also named Melinda) were living in Althen's Portage, Clark Co. Illinois. I am hoping to find out how Eliza is connected to the STUMP line.
