Joanne: I received a message not long ago from RMTerry@Prodigy.Net. This person has a record of a Hans Stumpff, b. 1600-1602 in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, m. unknown ca. 1628-30. Only known child was Diterich Stumpff who had a son, Hans Peter Stumpff, b. 1/20/1665. His son, Hans Michael Stump immigrated to Hampshire Co, VA before 1767. This is the extent of my "knowledge" of this family. It is possible that this Hans Stumpff, b. 1600-1602 was the father of my direct ancestor Christoph Stumpf, b. abt 1640 Germany, m. H. Johannes Raubling. Their only known son was Johann George Stump b abt 1670 in Darmstadt, Germany, m. Elizabeth Raubling on 11/13/1699. Their children were Christopher b. 1695 m. S. Schuetz, Johannes and Michael. Christopher, who died in 1779 in Milbock, PA had at least 16 children by 3 wives. Information received from Doris Weaver (dweaver@fgi.net) may or may not be relevant. Her information indicated that Johann George and his family arrived in the colonies in 1709/10. "They were part of the Palatine group that left Germany in the spring/summer of 1709 after a very fierce winter. They waited while Queen Anne readied enough ships for them, and then left England at Christmas 1709 arriving on these shores about Easter 1710. They were first in the state of New York and later at a completely German settlement at Scholarie, NY with all the other Germans. They were to manufacture pine oil for the English, but soon discovered that American pine trees did not produce the right kind of oil." Hopefully other members of this mail list will share their knowledge of the German Stumpf emigrants. Gordon W. Pace
