My family never talked about when my ancestors came to this country but family lore was that my that one of my grandfather's ancestors was "married to an indian squaw." I have heard the same story in my family but have been unable to verify it. My family were mostly Lutheran or Baptist. My Stumpf ancestors came from Ober-Gleen, Hessen (Hesse), Germany and I've traced back to Johannes Conrad Stumpf born about 1745. My GGF Johannes Sylvester STUMPF served in the civil war. b: 10 February 1840 Arnshain, Hessen (Hesse), Germany d: 25 June 1925 Watford, Warwich Twp., Lampton Co., Ontario, Canada married abt 1861 Patterson, New Jersey, USA to Mary Ann EDLER b: 12 May 1847 New Jersey?, USA d: 16 April 1917 Elmira, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada. The family seemed to cross the border several times thus I have to search MI, NJ, PA, OH and ON, CAN. Your given names of George, Charles, William, Walter and Henry are also in my tree. Many German families came north from PA to Canada. Have you researched in Waterloo Co.? I am also searching BENDER, BOHN, EDLER, ESCH, GERHARDT, GONTER, HOFFMAN, KERN, MOGK, OPPERTSHAUSER, SCHLEICH, WALTZ, ZIMMERMAN.
