He came to the United States prior to 10 October 1827, as his eldest child was born here. He was married to a Mary (last name unknown) and settled in western Virginia. They had 12 Children – nine boys and three girls, all born in western Virginia. The children’s names were Andrew, Conrad, Henry, James, Lewis Arnold, Elizabeth, Arnold B., Samuel Warner, Daniel Adams, Sarah Darcas, Mary C. and Solomon Columbus. Andrew was born 10 October 1827. He married Harriet Laughery 18 July 1857 in western Virginia. He died 14 May 1913 in Monte Rio, California. Conrad was born 1829. He married Meilala (last name unknown). She married Joseph Smith 5 July 1863 in Sonoma County, California. Mary C. was born 1848. She married Richard Brown 20 November 1879 in Sonoma County, California. Solomon Columbus was born 1850. John Conrad is listed with his wife Mary and all but their youngest child in Randolph County, western Virginia as 49 on the 1850 census. His birthplace is listed as Germany. He apparently became a widower, as there is no Mrs. Stump listed with the family in the 1860 Sonoma County census. He, with most of his family, came across the plains to Bodega, Sonoma County California. He first farmed and later had a hotel and saloon in Bodega where the Neles blacksmith shop and Camozzi Hotel were later. In the 1860 census he was listed as a farmer, 56 and his birthplace as Baden. In the 1870 census he is listed as a hotel-saloonkeeper. John and Mary had a housekeeper, Bridget Brannigan, from Oakland who was born in Ireland. John married Bridget after Mary’s death probably around 1865 (eldest child was born 1866), probably in St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Bodega, as she was a Catholic. They had six children, three sons and three daughters, presumably born in Bodega. The 1870 Sonoma County census lists Bridget as 39, John Conrad as 66. Their children were listed as follows: Mary Gertrude, three; Catherine L., two; Bernard Joseph, one; and Annie Virginia, œ. Twins Matthew Nicholas and John M. were born in 1872 or 1873. Catherine was baptized in St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Bodega 17 November 1867 and Bernard Joseph on 2 January 1869. (From the records of St. Teresa’s Church that are now in the Catholic Church in Tomales, Marin County. Other earlier records have been lost or misplaced.) John Conrad died 20 May 1876 in Bodega, Sonoma County, California. There is a marriage recorded in Sonoma County between Katie Stump and George Muse, 4 December 1884. This is possibly the Catherine mentioned previously. Bernard married in San Francisco and had a son and daughter. He worked for an ice cream firm. Annie Virginia married a Mr. Scott of Oakland. Mary Gertrude had a son, Frank, who kept the name of Stump and was a fireman in San Francisco. He married but had no children. Matthew never married and lived the winters in San Francisco with Frank Stump and in summers worked for Alaska Packers Salmon Fisheries. John M. married a lived in San Francisco. He had one son who joined the Navy at 17 and died in three months of pneumonia. Bridget Stump went back to Oakland. 5 August 1891 she had the body of her husband transferred from the Catholic Cemetery in Bodega to the Mountain View Cemetery, 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, California. He is located at plot 34, lot 35.
