He is listed with his parents, seven brothers and three sisters in Randolph County, western Virginia on the 1850 census as an eight-year-old. He is listed with his father, two brothers and one sister in Sonoma County, California on the 1860 census as a 16-year-old farmer. Samuel married Susan Catherine Samsell 13 December 1863. Susan was born in Dade County, Missouri 24 November 1848 and passed away December 1926 in Petaluma, California. She was one of nine children, her family can be traced to Germany c1580. As a small child she crossed the plains in a covered wagon. Samuel and Susan’s children were – Mary Rebecca born 21 December 1865 Bodega, Sonoma County, California, died 20 April 1925 San Diego County, California; Laura May born 15 February 1868 Bodega, Sonoma County, California; Walter Gaston born 2 February 1875 Bodega, Sonoma County, California; and Lottie Elizabeth born 24 February 1879, died 1944 San Rafael, Marin County, California. The Bodega, Sonoma County, California 1900 and 1910 census lists Susan as the mother of five children three living. Samuel had a saloon and a hotel at the old Muny House in Bodega. He also had a hotel and saloon at the mouth of the Salmon Creek when the San Franciscans came to fish. His profession is listed on the Bodega, Sonoma County, California 1870 census as “wine.” The 1880 and 1900 census list saloonkeeper. Samuel Stump died 19 October 1915 in Alameda County, California. Mary Rebecca married Charles B. Davis 21 December 1884, they had six children – Ada Catherine born 13 September 1886, died April 1969 Oakland, Alameda County, California; Geneva born 7 December 1891; Cordelia Elvira born 4 March 1900, died 3 July 1975 Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California; Virgil B.; Charles W.; and Samuel T. Laura May married Albert A. Martin of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they had six children – Albert A. Jr. born 13 October 1892 Bodega, Sonoma County, California, died May 1958 Mountain View, California; Ruth Catherine born 12 August 1900 Oakland, Alameda County, California; Claude Warner born 16 March 1902 Oakland, Alameda County, California; Chester born 11 April 1905 Anaconda, Montana, he passed away December 1964; Julia May born 3 October 1908 Anaconda, Montana; and Roberta Laura born 18 July 1913 Anaconda, Montana. Walter Gaston Married Margaret Jordan 9 April 1896. They had one daughter who passed away at the age of 18 months. Her name was Maud. Lottie Elizabeth married George Witham at Bodega, Sonoma County, California in 1903 they had no children. She passed away in San Rafael, California in 1944.
