While researching in Nashville I found the following: Obituaries from Early Tennessee Newspapers 1794-1851 Ed. by Rev. Silas E. Lucas Jr. Southern Historical Press, 1978 p. 357 "Stump, Mary L. youngest daughter of Col. John Stump. Died in Davidson County on the 25th ult." from the National Banner & Nashville Daily Advertiser. (Mon, March 4, 1833) "Stump, Mrs. Sarah. Consort of Maj. Christopher Stump, of this place. Died Thursday morning last." from Impartial Review and Cumberland Repository. (Sat. June 6, 1807) " Stump, Selinda Parallee. Age 17. Died in Davidson County on 15th inst." from National Banner & Nashville Advertiser. ( Mon Aug 20, 1832) My relative is Julia Ann Stump daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stump (1804-1852) and Melinda Tennessee Marshall (1808-1844). Thomas is the son of Maj. Christopher and Sarah Stump and grandson of Col Frederick Stump and Ann Snevly. Hope this helps someone else besides me! I am new to the STUMP digest. Is there a way to read the inquiries that have been posted in the past?
My message regarding this wouldn't go through the other day....just thought I'd mention that the naturalization papers I received gave me next to no information...in fact, I'm not real sure it's my gr-gr-grandfather as there is no other identifying information.....very discouraging. Joanie

Gosh! I feel foolish for forgetting....can't find the notes I wrote to myself either! Joanie
Searching for information about ELIZA STUMP (b. 1822 in Ohio) who married widower GEORGE E. WARD (b. 1819 in Wales) on 22 February 1864 in Coshocton County, Ohio. I want to find out if STUMP was Eliza's maiden or married surname. (The marriage record from Ohio did not list that information.) I think that Eliza had a sister named Mary Ann ESWORTHY - but that was her married surname, so that doesn't help.
Fishbowl: Please share what you get on the origin of the surname STUMP (STUMPF/ STUMPH/STOMP).
