In my last message I reported some information re Christopher Stump which was obtained from an LDS Church report from 1995. According to Doris Weaver's record some of this information is incorrect. She has solid evidence that Christopher's first wife was Susannah Schuetz (of Shuts) and Christopher's first 8 children were from this marriage, including the famous Hans Frederick Stump. This information comes from the will of Christopher's father, Johann Georg Stump. Also, the immigration record I found for a Christopher Stump to Schaefferstown, PA in 1741 apparently refers to a different Christopher as Doris has good information that Christopher arrived in the colonies with his parents in 1709/10. I have been researching this line of my genealogy for a very short time, whereas, Doris has been at it for twenty years Gordon W. Pace siriuspace@aol.com

Could anyone tell me where my ancestor Peter Stump fits into this? I have Peter as born in 1740 with a brother, Christopher. Peter married Catherine Widen. One of his sons, Joseph Stump married Elizabeth Boggess. Any connection here? I'd really appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks. Jill (LSZZ88A@prodigy.com)
My records on the ancestry of Christopher Stump come from the LDS Church: His grandfather was Christoph Stumpf, b abt 1640 in Germany, m. H. Johannes Raubling. Only known child was John George Stump, b abt 1670 , Germany, married Elizabeth Raubling on Nov 13, 1699 at "6100 Paranstadt". This is apparently the address of a church in Germany. What city? John George Stump's children were Christopher Stump, Johannes Stump and Michael Stump. An emigration record I saw showed Christopher emigrated to Schaefferstown, PA in 1741. Christopher's children by first wife Margaretha were: Hans Frederick Stump, George Adam, Christopher, Henry, Catherine, Maria, Susanna, Margaret and Magdalene. By his second wife, Anna Margaretha he had Catherine, Juliana, MArgaret, Christopher, Leonhart and Michael. Doris: Can you give me the info of his other two children and his third wife? RMTerry@Prodigy.Net has a lineage of a Hans Stumpf(f) b abt 1600 in Hessen Germany, with son Diterich Stumpff and grandson Hans Peter Stumpff, b abt 1665. I wonder if there is a connection between these families. Gordon W. Pace siriuspace@aol.com
I just joined the list and reveiwed the archives. I filled in some details of my Stump lineage from messages by Christine McNish, R M Terry, Allice Reynolds and Macalyne Fristoe. My ggg grandfather is ALSEY PACE who m. SALLY ALICE STUMP on 8/17/1808. Alsey was killed in the War of 1812 at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 under the command of his father-in-law Col. HANS FREDERICK STUMP. My records show that HANS FREDERICK STUMP had 7 children and his father, CHRISTOPHER STUMP, b 1695, had 15 children by his two wives. I have more on the ancestry of this CHRISTOPHER STUMP which I will include in my next message. Gordon W. Pace siriuspace@aol.com
Hello List, I am on cloud nine! Just received information that confirms some I already had and adds to it. Have learned for sure that I am not ONLY researching the name STAMPF...but one of that line used the name STUMPF as it was spelled incorrectly on his birth certificate...his offspring continued to spell it STUMPF.....THEREFORE, I am seeking information on the family of Edward Ernest STUMPF(1899-1939) and his wife Eva (SPEARS)STUMPF(1900-1983) of Brooklyn, NY. They had a son named Edward Ernest STUMPF whose wife was RONNI (don't know if first or last name)...and their children were: James STUMPF and Edward STUMPF. Is anyone here searching this line? Have lots of info to share with you cousin! Unless of course, you've been busier than I and can share some with me! Joanie
I'm not of the Brethren faith, but as I was in the Barnhart mailing list today, someone said there is a Brethren Genealogy Mailing List. It's a genealogy and history network sponsored by Fellowship of Brethren Genealogists. For information it says to E-mail: McAdams@udayton.edu Hope this is helpful. Jill (LSZZ88A@prodigy.com)
I just found a great site for Indiana marriages. There were 40 Stump's listed-all married before 1850. Address: www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html Good Luck! Jeanne Leita Stump
My what a beautiful name. Thank you for your kind reply and offer of assistance! I was hopeful that Jacob had other relations here in USA. I have not researched his ancestors as yet, and probably need to see where and exactly when he entered US, the ship, etc. Anyway, I will keep on looking, and perhaps there is a researcher or two who have gone before me. Hello STUMP Researchers: I am searching for information about Jacob STUMP who was born 1834 in Germany. Between 1854 and 1862 he married my great grandmother, Anna Margarethal 'Turp' MIES in perhaps Armühla, Rhineprovinz, GER?. Their eldest, Elizabeth had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Her youngest brother, Henry STUMP was born June 16, 1875, in Armühla, Rhineprovinz, GER according to database being compiled for the area. it is noted therein that all children were born in Armühla. About the best you might come up with is a list of the members of a congregation from their yearly meeting. You will find no birth, baptism, marriage or burial records like you would normally find in a Lutheran or other church. The Brethren present a real challenge to research. You have to use other records - wills, deeds, census, cemetery, etc. records to piece the family together. You can also hope they join a Lutheran church where you can get better records on them.Bob Givens
Hi Stump Researchers! I have been looking for years for the parents of Margaret STUMP HUFFMAN. Don't know if her birth name was Stump or Huffmann. Anyhow she was born abt 1795 in PA, married George MYERS bef 1818 in PA. In 1828 they were in or near Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA in 1828 when their daughter Rebecca MYERS was born. They could have been from further east and just passing through on their way to Franklin Co., OH where the family settled soon after that. Anyone hear of her? I would apprecite hearing the answer to your question - "Where to research STUMPS in PA?" I have Virginia figured out - go to Richmond. I have Ohio figured out - -go to OH Hist Soc in Columbus and -go to the county seat and -go to the appropiate OH Network of American History Research Center OR at least call or write. Each place does have exclusive data. If anyone has a question, I will be happy to expound on the lovely state of Ohio. But I would like to hear about PA. Thanks, Betsy Descendant of Catherine STUMP b.1786, married John Bookwalter in Cambria Co, PA, in 1811.

I have the family Bible, circa 1850, but someone cut out the birth and death pages probably before 1890. I'm relatively sure that they were BRETHREN. Someone started writing deaths in the Bible in 1890 and also tucked a couple of obits, an empty envelope, and an 1828 letter in there too. So far, based on the death's in the Bible and census records, I have pieced together the following in the Stump line. GEORGE W. STUMP b. 1835 in PA, d. 6-12-1907. He was married to SUSANNA(H) ? b.about 1840 d. 12-14-1890. The 1880 census shows them living on Eighteenth Street in Sharpsburg with four children:WILLIAN(M) F. STUMP age 17 -the "m" on William is crossed out on the census records and a very bold "n" is written above , GEORGE THOMAS STUMP age 12, HENRY STUMP age 9, and CHARLES STUMPage 5. WILLIAN(M) F. STUMP b. 1864 d. 6-12-1907 in Braddock, PA married MARY ISABELLA MILLER (shown as "BELLA" in census records) b. 1865 d. 11/1865 and is shown in the 1900 census living on Corey Street in Braddock, PA with two sons, WILLIAM C. STUMP, b. 6-1886 and WALTER H. STUMP, b. Jan. 1890 and his brother-in-law, JNO (JOHN) W. MILLER b.8-1870. William F. and Bella were still living at 130 Corey in 1920. William F. worked for "the railroad" and owned several row houses in Braddock. He was said to be "quite the dapper Dan." WALTER H. STUMP b.Jan 1990 d.9-27-1948 married MABEL BEATRICE LAUFFER b. 9-1896 , d. 9-24-59. In 1920, lived in what looks like 114 Comerie or Comerad Avenue in Braddock. The film is very poor. They moved to Michigan during the depression and remained here. I'm also looking for information on ULYSSES JAMES STUMP who is listed in the family Bible as Ulysses Grant Stump which I believe is an error. He died in Cook County Illinois. His obit gave the following information: Ulysses James Stump died 9-25-1903 (Born abt. 1865). 38 years old, not married. His father lived in Allegheny City. Worked for the Rail Road. Killed in a switching accident on run to Elsdon. IL. Taken to Krugers Undertaker. Had boarded with Mr. R.W. Butterfield where he had roomed since 1893. Remains taken to Englewood, then to Fort Wayne and then to his home in Allegheny Pennsylvania. His father lived in Allegheny City and he had 5 brothers and 1 sister in Pennsylvania. Please check out my site for additional information: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/o/u/Sue-A-Douglas/index.html I also have an old empty envelope that was addressed to MATTHEW T. KIRK of Curlsville, Clarion County, PA. The return address was the Paymaster General's Office, Washington, D.C. and it's dated October 5 (no year). It was free postage and probably contained military pay. I have found a Matthew T. Kirk who died in a military hospital in Virginia during the Civil War. He's probably my guy but I don't know which side of the family he fits with - my grandpa Stump or his wife, Mabel Lauffer Stump. I also have an 1828 letter is from JACOB HILES and, again, I have no idea of it's significance. Jacob may have been an indentured servant. He sent the letter to MR. WILLIAM MC MILLIN in Cannonsburg, Washington County, PA. The letter reads as follows: October the 2 1828 Shipensburgh Cumberland Co Dear sir I take this opportunity of letting you know that I am in a good state of health and I hope that you are in the same Dear Sir I am thinking long to hear from you and for to know how you are Dear Sir I never knew what it was to make a liven before I have worked both day and nighte since I left you. I think that I can make more tho if I had worked with you I will send sise dollars more which will make twelve dollars I have to pay too dollars per week for bording I am working for a man the name of Robbert Johnston in three weeks from this date I want to make for Brownsville Dear Sir I will be home the first of November if I am spared I need not write any more I will take you as much back as I have sent you you need not be uneasy about me Dear Sir I have not time to write Excuse my bad writing for I have not time Give my best respects to Mrs. W. Mc Millin and your mother and the rest of the family Mr William McMillin Jacob Hiles There is also a death listed in the Bible for a CHARLEY MACON with no date but, based on the order in the Bible, he died between 1890 and 1903. Again, I have no clue as to who he was. I have noticed that some of the eastern PA Stump families used the given names of George, Charles, William and Henry as does my family. Should I be looking at these families closer? If you have anything that might point me in the right direction, please let me know. I'm taking a trip to PA and I want to be barking up the right tree when I get there. (Pun intended) Thanks, in advance, for your help. Sincerely, Sue Stump Douglas
