I just found another George W. Stump on the LDS site undeer IGI. He was born March 8, 1821 at Moorefield, Hardy Co. WV Father: Adam Stump Mother: Mary Gregg Parsons Could this be your George Washington Stump? I have never heard of Adam Stump from Hardy Co. Where does he fit in? Do we have another Stump family from somewhere else? There is no source for the information. Diana in AK

If early 1865, then he is the Captain >George Washington Stump, commander Company "B" 18th Virginia Cavalry >(Confederate). No, I am pretty sure mine is not George Washington Stump. My John Stump(the father of my George Stump), I think, may be the son of a George Stump from Hardy Co. I found on the LDS site a John Stump born born 1795 in Hardy Co. to George Stump and Elizabeth Wilson. I feel this may be my connection. On that same site it says your George Washington Stump's. > >I have in my line George Stump b. 5/5/1787 d. 7/26/1863 who married >Catherine B. Neff b. 8/21/1785 d. 6/24/1846 > My George Stump was way younger than yours(about one generation as you can see from the census) and married to a Catherine Jane Neff. I think it is just further down in the Stump line somewhere. >They moved to Indiana in early 1830s. Were the parents of my >great-great-grandfather William James Stump b. 2/18/1822 in Hardy County >and d. 7/13/1864 at General Hospital Chattanooga (Tennessee). Private >Company "I" 128th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded at Kennesaw >Mountain (Georgia) but contracted Typhoid Fever while in the hospital and >died of the fever. Probably been better off with his unit! Who is the father of your George Washington Stump? I know I have found him in my research. From what I have found on the Net is say George W. Stump's father was Michael Neff Stump and mother Sophia Long. Is that correct? Then I feel that Micheal Neff Stump's parents George Stump and Catherine Neff. So George that-- George born 1787 had a brother John born 1795*****Who I feel in MY John in the 1850 Hardy census and 1860 Vermilion Co. IL census I sent out on the Stump Listserv. But I have no proof yet just lots of exploring all the information out there. So I feel we are pretty close and should keep in contact. Do you know any of the other children of George Stump and Elizabeth. I found a Catherine Stump as a sister of George and John. I have seen the name Elizabeth Massey and the name of Elizabeth Wilson. I have also seen them as both wifes but Elizabeth Wilson as the first wife and mother of my JOHN. My John Stump died 4/26/1871 in Pilot twp, Vermilion Co. IL. I don't have a date on the death of his son, George, yet. I have also see My John Stump married to a Prudence Parsons but I feel on Genforum/stump it was corrected that Prudence Parsons was married to the John Stump-- son of Leonard Stump JR. My John Stump was married to a Sarah and I am going after the marriage of a John Stump and Sarah Neff in 1814 hoping to find out if it is them. I do have another Stump family in Vermilion Co. IL that I can't connect to and they have a George Washington Stump in the family who came from OH or IN. I will forward you to them and also tell them about this list. Keep asking those questions. We might get this straightened out and I feel we are related thru brothers George(you) Stump born 1787 and John(Me) Stump born 1795-- sons of George Stump and Elizabeth Wilson. Unless you think your George's mother was Elizabeth Massey. I haven't done any research on that yet. Diana in AK

Elizabeth Stump/Wilson was buried in Muncie, IN. I have a picture of Elizabeth Stump. ELIZABETH WILSON DIED AT AGE OF 95 Born in West Virginia, Had lived in Vermilion Country and Iroquois for Past Sixty Years The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, who died at the home of her son, James Wilson, near Loda in Iroquois country, at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, will be held from Emberry Chapel, north of Muncie, at 11 o'clock Thursday morning. Rev. Thomas Snider will officiate, and interment will be made in the Emberry cometary adjoining the church. The body was brought from Loda to the Blythe undertaking establishment in this city where it will remain until Thursday morning, when it will be removed overland to the chapel where the services are to be observed. Elizabeth J. (Stump) Wilson was born in Hardy county, West Virginia, March 4, 1819. She grew to young womanhood in the vicinity where she was born, and Nov. 6, 1843 was united in marriage with Jesse H. Wilson. To this union eight children were born, the following five of whom survive: Mrs. Adelia LeNeve, North Vermilion street; Jesse P. Wilson, north of the city; James M. Wilson, Loda, with whom she has made her home since the death of her husband 27 years ago;Mrs. Clara Rice , Beagle, Kans. Mrs. Esther Tevebaugh, Greeley, Colo. Twenty-five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild also survive. In 1852 four families, including the Stumps and Wilsons left their home in Hardy county, and proceed overland, via the Prairie Schooner, until they reached a point about 3 miles south of where Collison now stands. Nov 10, 1852, the land in that vicinity suiting them in most respects, they stopped and began plans for making their home there. The remainder of Mrs. Wilson's life was spent in that locality with the exception of the past five years during which she has lived in Iroquois country. She is the last of the older generation, who came westward with the party in '52, and is known to practically every person in Pilot township where she was for more than half a century a resident. Despite her great age she was active until a short time before her death, preserving the features and activity not possessed by many persons thirty years her junior. The deceased was able to tell of many incidents connected with the early history of this county. When the band of homeseekers passed through Danville, just 61 years prior to the day of her death, there was less than a thousand people here, and the hazel brush which covered the whole of the present site north of town was so thick that paths through it were necessary to permit communication with the outside world. Denmark was then the larger settlement, although Danville was rapidly overhauling the former "city" for supremacy. The prairie was open and unfenced. They said that Mrs. Wilson was one of the pioneers to whom the opening of this wild country must be accredited. Thank you, Diana in AK

I am searching for a Nancy E. REYNOLDS b. abt 1835, possibly in Craig County, VA. On 10 Feb 1857 in Tazewell, VA she married David Hairston STUMP b. 27 May 1834. Some preliminary information would indicate that Nancys parents were Robert REYNOLDS b. 1807/1812, possibly in Washington County, VA and Susan SARVER b. abt 1814; they married 23 Mar 1835 in Botecourt, VA. Im having no luck in uncovering any REYNOLDs in the area although there appear to be a number of MCREYNOLDS, in particular, a Robert MCREYNOLDS b. 1 Apr 1807 whose parents were Robert MCREYNOLDS b. 7 Feb 1772 in Caswell County, NC and Frances Fanny FLEMING b. 26 Dec 1777; they married 17 May/Oct 1796 in Abingdon, Washington, VA. Does anyone happen to know more about Susan SARVER or if the above is Nancys true line or not? Any and all help or leads would be greatly appreciated. Emme Ratcliff Leslie
>From earlier information which I have received, the wife of David Hairston STUMP b. 27 May 1834 in Tazewell, VA d. 16 May 1911 in Washington County, VA was Nancy E. REYNOLDS b. 1840 in Craig County, VA. Their daughter was Martha Jane STUMP b. 9 Sep 1857 in Tazewell who was married to John Alexander P. RATLIFF b. Sep 1852. However, during a recent visit to the Old Glade Cemetary in Glade Spring, VA I found the headstone of David; included on this same stone was the name of his wife, Harriet M. ______ b. 26 Nov 1839 d. 5 Nov 1911. Can anyone solve this mystery? Who was the mother of Martha? Did David have two wives? Any help would be appreciated. Emme Ratcliff Leslie
During earlier research of the wife of George STUMP b. abt 1770/1780 I came across the names Rhoda SCIENSENTAFEE or SANTAFEE born about the same time. More recent research in the Tazewell area has uncovered other spellings assumed to be of the same family; i.e., SCICENTAFER, SCICUNTAFER, SINCINTAFFER, SINCENTAFEE, and SINCENTAFFY (later shortened to TAFFY). These spellings appear in various census records of the early 1800s. Discussions with others in the Tazewell area would seem to indicate that these names probably are one and the same and are of Indian origin. Im wondering if these are anglicized versions of an Indian name. I do notice that Standing Deer was a relatively popular Indian name of the region during this time. Possibly the above could be a takeoff of this or another similar name. Can anyone possibly help me and provide some additional background on Rhoda? Was she Indian and does anyone know of her parents? I do notice that a John SINCENTAFFER does have a 60-70 year old female in his household in the 1830 Tazewell census. Could this be my Rhoda (she apparently was alive on 12 Feb 1825 to handle the will of George)? Any help would be appreciated. Emme Ratcliff Leslie
Emma, Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what part of the country you are talking about. My grandmother's grandmother was a Lydia Stump(f) born in 1838 according to my aunt's records. My grandmother always said her grandmother was an Indian ... and there was a photo my grandmother had (but it is now lost) that showed Lydia in full indian dress (both my mother and aunt remember seeing the picture). Grandma also indicated that Lydia's husband, Sylvester Hall (born 1814), had been an indian scout. They had a son, George Nelson Hall. According to my records, they lived and died in Pickaway County, but to-date, I have been unable to locate where they were born or their families. Your story makes me wonder ... could my Lydia have been half Indian? could she have named her son after her grandfather? This is my brick wall family ... so perhaps I'm grasping at straws. Hello Everyone: I am the person who accidently gave Gordon the wrong name for FREDERICK STUMP's wife. You are all correct ANNA SNAVELY & CATHERINE GINGRY. SARAH SWINNEY was my 4th great-grandmother whose daughter MARY SARAH TURNER married the son of BARBARA STUMP and PHINEAS COX, SAMUEL COX. I have SARAH STUMP who married PHILMER WHITWORTH as the daughter of FREDERICK STUMP JR. son of FREDERICK STUMP & ANNA SNAVELY. Allice Reynolds
Hi! I am related to Nell McNish Gambill through her brother Samuel A. McNish, my great-grandfather. She was not a descendent of Capt Leeper and Susan Drake. That was her husband's family. The first half of the book is her husband's family and the second half is her family. Her family includes chapters on the McNish, Stump, Marshall, and Dean families. Nell's mother was Julia Ann Stump, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stump and Malinda Marshall, granddaughter of Maj. Christopher Stump, great-granddaughter of Col. Frederick Stump. I have a copy of her book if anyone needs some info. One problem is that Aunt Nell did not put any sources in her book and I have found that some of the facts are incorrect. But it has given me a good clues and a starting point for my research. Christine M. Hans Frederick Stump, 1723-1820, PA>GA>TN, was one of the original setlers in Davidson Co., TN (Christmas Day, 1779). He was one of the more "colorful" characters in our early history. This book summarizes his experiences in Pennsylvania, where he got into trouble with the Quakers and the Indians after killing several Indians who broke into his house and then going to their camp and killing several more. (There are many variations of what actually happened, including the possible loss of several of his children.) This almost precipitated a war. He escaped from jail and next turned up in the Ceded Lands in Georgia, where he farmed and developed several mills. He fought with Marion ("The Swamp Fox") in the Revolution, was imprisoned in St. Augustine by the British, then escaped and moved his family away from the British-controlled area just in time to join the James Robertson party and go to what was to become Fort Nashborough. Once again he thrived in business, living in Davidson Co. until he was 97 years old. --Gambill, Nell McNish. ((1946). The Kith and Kin of Capt. James Leeper and Susan Drake. James ROBERTSON performed the ceremony. Capt. LEEPER/LEIPER was killed in the Battle of the Bluff, April 2, 1781. Mrs. Gambill summarizes information about several branches of her family (DRAKE, SMITH, CRIDDLE, EWING, GAMBILL, WHELESS, McNISH, DEAN, STUMP, and MARSHALL). I suspect that Sarah/Sally was a granddaughter of Sr and was a daughter of Frederick Stump, Jr. Frederick Jr. had a daughter named Sarah and a son named Jacob. Sally (Stump) Pace and Jacob Stump were listed on a bond as owing the Alsey Pace estate in 1815, after Alsey died in the war. It is known that Jacob's sister Sarah married Philmer Whitworth. But if this marriage took place after 1813 (when Alsey died) she could have been Alsey's wife before she married Philmer. Or perhaps there is another granddaughter of Frederick named Sarah or Sally. Can anyone help resolve this mystery? Gordon W. Pace siriuspace@aol.com

Between 1854 and 1862 he married my great grandmother, Anna Margarethal 'Turp' MIES in perhaps Armühla, Rhineprovinz, DEU?. Their eldest, Elizabeth had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Her youngest brother, Henry STUMP was born June 16, 1875, in Armühla, Rhineprovinz, DEU according to database being compiled for the area. it is noted therein that all children were born in Armühla. Therefore, assume they immigrated to America after that time and shortly? before they came to St. Mark, KS in 1886. John served in the German Army before immigrating to America. On his 1918 Axis Alien Registration, son, John, states he entered the US through the port of New York on the 13th day of May 1889 on the ship, Westerland. After his stint in the German Army. Naturalized 1896. Does anyone have any further information? Did other family members immigrate with them or at another time? Can anyone do a lookup of Immigration Application and family records?
