Michael Stump, Junior h/o Sarah Hughes 02. Catherine w/o Jacob Brake 03. George h/o Elizabeth Wilson 04. Leonard h/o Catherine See 05. Mary Magdaline w/o "Jacob Yoakham" As noted above the Michael Senior was born in Eberbach am Neckar in the principality of Hessen - Darmstadt of the Germanies. A record of the birth has been given previously. The marriage record and records of the childrens births have not been found to date. The likelihood of ever finding them seems to be a remote thing at best. An unsuccessful search for them was concluded recently. this is the family that emigrated from Hesse to the colonies in 1743. Presumably all of the children were born overseas before emigrating or at least the majority of them were due to the derived birth year of Michael Junior, circa 1730. Sarah w/o Jacob Simons The above Michael Junior is the 1744 Hans Michael Stumpf der Jung indentured to the woodworking trade in the town of Eberbach of Hesse in the Germanies. As noted the year of his birth has been approximated as 1730 based upon the age for apprenticing there at the time. No marriage record has been found to date. The year of marriage, 1765, has apparently been derived from the Oldest child's, Michael 3rd., known birth date in the year 1766. the third Michael's birth date was undoubtedly taken from a long - lost and missing family Bible which many of the present - day descendants have been unable to locate, unfortunately. The birth date was known and inscribed on the gravesite marker previously shown to commemorate the 1912 ceremonies. the month and year of death is derived, as noted previously, from the date of the inventory of his, Michael Stump (f), Junior, estate since he died intestate. Stump, a great grandson of Charleston, West Virginia, initiated the memorial movement and he and Taylor R. Stump Addressed the gathering at the time of the commemoration. 3. Taken From The Book Below, Michael Stumpf / Stump Sr. of Virginia 1709-1768 by: Thurman Stump 1975 - ----------------------------------------------------------------- This is our first record of any of the names of Michael Stumpf / Stump Sr. and Catherine / Katherine's Family. The wife's surnames before marriage remain unknown to the date this is written. There were six known children in the family: Michael, Jr. --------- m: Sarah Hughes Catherine ----------- m: Jacob Blake George -------------- m: Elizabeth Wilson Elizabeth ------------ m: Felix Welton Leonard ------------- m: 1773 Catherine See Mary Magdaline -- m: a "Jacob Yoakham" (mother's will) Additional data about some of the family members has been compiled in a manuscript titled The Stumps, Descent of the Four Michael's by Paul Hardman, Charleston, West Virginia, October 19, 1940. A copy of the writing is in the Department of Archives and History, State of West Virginia, Charleston, West Virginia. Sarah Hughes, the wife of Michael Stump Jr. is the daughter of Thomas Hughes Sr. who was killed by Indians in 1778 in Monongalia County which was formed in 1776 from the District of West Augusta County in the Northern Neck of Virginia. She, Sarah Hughes is the sister of Jesse, Thomas Jr. and Elias Hughes. Jesse Hughes gained quite a bit of notoriety as an Indian fighter in that particular frontier area. In the section "Hughes Family Notebook" of Genealogies by Miss Minnie McWhorter* the following ascendant Hughes lineage is given: Sarah Hughes m: Col. Michael Stump Jr. Thomas Hughes Sr. m: Mary Baker d: April 1778 Thos. Hewes m: Mary Tedrick Quaker ("out of meeting") d: 1735 William Hughes Jr. m: Sarah Bezer 1689 dau. of Edward Bezer William Hughes Sr. m: Deborah ------- d: 1698 N.J. Validation of the lineage is beyond the purpose and scope of this writing. However, inquires containing the names of Sarah and father Thomas Hughes Sr. were sent the state chapters of Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and to the National Society of the Colonial Dames XVII Century in Washington, District of Columbia. The replies were unanimously negative. The names of Sarah Hughes and father Thomas Hughes Sr. do not appear on the named societies' register of ancestors for membership in those organizations. This does not invalidate the preceding lineage but merely shows that it has not been confirmed for membership in the named societies. The New Jersey societies of those patriotic organizations remain open to further inquiry. 1. Eli C. & Elmer W. Stump
    2. I have two Stump men who are identified as sons of Jonathan Stump but seem not be sons of Jonathan's first wife, Sarah Shaw. Apparently they are children of second wife Elizabeth Bowman. Eli C. Stump, born 6/24/1872 in Indiana, is mentioned in the Jesse H. Stump 1913 land affidavit. Eli's wife is "Rilly Stump.." Does anyone know her maiden name? Does Rilly stand for Merilla? Jesse Stump wrote in 1904 that Eli was married and had a family but I have little information on these folks. I have children listed as Lemoine A. Stump, Wayne Calvert Stump, Flroence Alberta Stump, and Twins 1 @ 2. (Most of my information on this part of the family came from the Shaw records, and they weren't that interested in these non-Shaws. They couldn't know that one of there descendants would later marry a Stump and that the family would want to know all about both sides.) A second son of the 2d marriage is Elmer W. Stump, who lived near Roanoke, Allen County, IN., at one time. He was born 10/16/1870. Married Lulu Norris c1889. Children Gussie, Orvil, Otis, Goldie, Bertha, and Harvey. Does anybody know what happened to these folks and their descendants? Jan T

Shaw says, "Daniel Stump, a son of Levi and Sarah A. Stump, is a resident of the State of Missouri, and his address and wife's name, if he be married, are unknown to affiant." No other information except that my husband is a descendant of Daniel's brother Riley F. Stump. Can anyone add to this? Jan T

    1. Michael Stumpf-Hessen to VA
    2. Some time ago I received a message from RMTerry@Prodigy.Net showing a Hans Stumpff b ca 1600-02 in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, m. unknown ca 1628-30. Only known child was Diterich Stumpff, who had a son, Hans Peter Stumpff, b 1/20/1665. His son Hans Michael Stump (who may have been born abt. 1690, conceivably as late as 1709) emigrated to Hampshire Co, VA in the 1700's. Hampshire Co is not far east of the Monongalia Co where Michael Stump, Sr.'s family apparently settled. Could there be a connection? I believe that Hans was kind of like a title, such as Mr. or Master, and was dropped by people after they emigrated. Is that right? Gordon W. Pace

Ellie, who is looking for a Leonard STump and Mary(wife) is interested also in doing all the Leonards we can find. I am interested like you in different people in the family. I think Leonard Stump and his wife(Elizabeth or Catherine) lived in Hardy Co about the same time as my Stumps. It always helps to study all the Stumps in the same region and time frame. Then I'd like to study all similar names like George, John, Michael and put them in the right time frames and document them as well as possible so I can separate them. I think we can do that on the Stump listsev slowly and around all the other information out there on the Stumps. We probably will get help from each line who has that name in it. Maybe they have done that. I am new to the Stump listserv. If we could list the same names but place them in the correct time frame and the correct line, it sure would help me. Like an index for anyone who comes along later also. This will take time and summer is my busiest so we will just take it at our own speed each working on what name and when they have time and put it on the list when they get done. Anyone can add any information they may have found. Keep in contact. Diana in AK

That is just me again. Making sure this is correct?? The parents of your George and my John are: George Stump and Elizabeth but some say Elizabeth Wilson and some say Elizabeth Massey. What do you say? I think my John's mother was Elizabeth Wilson, the first wife. >They had 9 Children: > >John L. Stump b. 3 March 1808 in Hardy County, Virginia > >Charlotte P. Stump b. 3 November 1818 in Hardy County, Virginia. I just found another James P. Stump born March 9, 1817 Moorefield, Hardy, WV parents Adam Stump and Mary Gregg Parsons. Adam Stumps parents: Leonard Stump Catherine SEE I see the SEE, NEFF, STUMP, HARNESS, WILSON in that area are all confusing because they all married and some had similar names. It does help with they use a last name as a middle name of a relative then you know there is a connection. Like George Harness Stump My John Stump had a Francis A. Harness child living with them in the 1850 census but I don't think him or her went with them to IL. The other two children that George had William Seymour Maslin and John A Godolphin both changed their names to Stump.
