    3. Hello, I am new to the Stump List and am enjoying it greatly. I was hoping I would find someone in my line and together we could hopefully help me overcome my "brick wall." My great grandfather was Milton A. Stump, a man of great talent (a builder of many local buildings including our church) with many interests. I became fascinated with him and became determined to complete his family line. I know Milton's parents were Nathan (December 12, 1840-November 27, 1913) and Sara Ann Schneider (January 9, 1842-November 15, 1925) Stump. >From the family Bible I also found Nathan's parents Benjamin Stump and Esther (Hettie) Billman. Then came my first problem, but I discovered Benjamin's parents Jonas Stump (August 30, 1789-October 10, 1857) and Anna Maria Brobst (December 4, 1791-March 19, 1869). Now things got confusing; I think Jonas' parents were John/Johannes Stump (march 2, 1763-January 25, 1828) and Anna Elizabeth Bauscher (May 4, 1764-1837). One of my areas of research said John's/Johannes' parents were John George Stump and Maria Anna Strasser. Another source said John's/Johannes' parents were Johan Wilhelm Stump (April 5, 1725-June 5, 1805) and Anna Magdelena (April 14, 1724-May 28, 1815). I think I need help. It has always been my goal to find the first ancestor on this shore, the name and year of the ship on which they arrived, and the location where they were born. With this Stump/Stumpf Family I am so close but yet so far. Can anyone help me? Thank you. Barbara M. Thomas

    2. My Riegel genealogy book has a family I'm curious about: Catharine Riegel, born c1778, PA, married c1795 one Jonathan Stump b c1775. Their children: i. John Stump born c1797. ii Martha Stump b c. 1800 m Abraham Snyder iii Jonathan Stump b c1802 iv Catharine Stump b c1804 married ? Potts v Sarah Stump b c1808 m Daniel Hoffman Does anybody recognize these folks? I've got a cabbage-leaf John Stump born about that time that would fit in nicely with all those "almost" dates, but without a geographical location it's probably just a nice fantasy. Other Stump Reigel connections: Carrie Theresa Riegel, b 17 Feb 1863, married 14 Dec 1887, Henry Arthur Stump b 17 Feb 1863. In 1923 Henry was a Judge of the Superior Court, Baltimore MD. Children: Henry Arthur Stump Jr. b July 1889. Anna Stump b Mar 1891. Augustus Herman Stump b 1893. George Irwin Riegle born 3 May 1891, German Twp, Darke Co OH, married (1) 7 Sep 1912 in Darke Co OH, Cecile Jesiop; married (2) 2 May 1917 in Darke Co OH Alma Stump. 1. Berks County John Stump(s)
    2. Berks County Church Records p 107 has a Johann Friderich Stump christening. This kid was illegitmate son of Johann Fridrich Stump and Anna Ros. Schwabin. Child was born 5/24/1783 and christened 6/8/1783. Sponsors at christening were jacob Schwab and Catharina. I don't have other information on him or when he died. I presume there was a family connection between the sponsors and the mother. The book Pennsylvania German Marriages shows a marriage at Schwartzwald Reformed Church of Exeter Twp, Berks Co. PA. for Johannes Stump and Esther Klein of Bern on 11/28/1792. Marriage performed by Rev. John William Boos. Same marriage reported in the book Berks County Church Records of the 18th century for the Reformed church of Reading. Same date. I've got some other John Stumps, none with DODs, in Lebanon County and at Germantown, plus one in Somerset County PA.. Not to mention a couple who are just from "PA". Jan T

Diterich Stumpff h/o Anna Catharine The birth and marriage records, possibly the death records also, are, again, casualties of the Thirty Years' War. On the other hand this progenitor may have been a Casualty himself in the Thirty Years' War. For instance. Johann Stumpf in Zurich Mentions a Hans Stumpf of that branch of the family in 1637 in Dresden, a city on the Elbe River valley area. However, the single and double - f name suffixes substantially differentiates the two individuals. Johann Stumpf: Geschlecht in Zurich (the Family in Zurich, Switzerland) Year 1550 Notes he was a widely known and famed historian who seems to have been born in Brussels, now the capital of Belgium, But at that time part of the Netherlands. Others Mentioned in this branch of the family are a Hans Stumpf of 1637 in Dresden and a Hans Conrad Stumpf of 1768 in service in Holland. NOTE: The birth year of Hans Stumpff in Eberbach am Neckar was approximated to be around A.D. 1600 - 1602. Another source record says "Johann Stumpf (1500 - 1576), wrote on Swiss history and topography, was born at Bruchsal (near Carlsruhe) [Bruchsal is in the Bistum Speyer area about 30 miles south of Heidelberg and south by east of Phillipsburg on the Rhein River] in 1500 and died at Zurich in 1576." and it is noted, that he studied theology at Strasbourg and Heidelberg, was ordained priest in 1522 at Basel and assigned a parish in Canton Zurich. He adopted the Protestant faith and remained at the same parish as Protestant pastor until 1543. Retired in 1561. Referenced writings are those of A.D. 1541,1548 and 1556.
