    2. Diana M. Nelson
    3. First I would like to thank Gloria Husk joining our list and sharing with us. I feel that is how we will get this all connected--maybe to Adam and Eve. Just kidding. Then I need to let others who wrote me know I will get get back to them about doing individual reseach on specific names in the Stump family, like: all the Georges, Johns, Elizabeths, Leonards, etc. I think we can work on that on this list slowly but surely to help keep each name and date and place separate. But now for my good news! I made 3 connections on the Neffs and Stumps. If you look back at my first post with my Stumps, Neffs and Wilsons that let Hardy Co in 1852 and ended up in Pilot Twp, Vermilion Co. IL.,especially the obit of Elizabeth Stump/Wilson and the 1850 and 1860 census-- I will explain where they fit in. I have to thank Janet Waite who forwarded me to JW Neff(Bill). Bill must have really done research on the Hardy Co. Neffs and Stumps because they have so many similar names it is very difficult for anyone new to come in and try to separate them. Bill have done an excellent job. My John Stump born married Sarah Neff in June 4 or 14 of 1814 in Hardy Co. VA. I have the June 4, 1814 date from the Hardy Co. Homepage site and the June 14 date from JW Neff. I will try and clear that up. John Stump was born Jan 18, 1795 to George Stump and Elizabeth Massey Wilson. Sarah Neff was born 1795 to Michael Neff and Mary(?). John and Sarah moved in 1852 to Pilot twp., Vermilion Co. IL and died and buried there. Sarah had a sister, Catherine Neff, who married George(II) Stump. This is the George Stump and Catherine Neff that moved to IN. John Stump and George Stump were brothers and Sarah Neff and Catherine Neff were sisters all from Hardy Co. Brothers married sisters. Their children were double cousins. Then my John STUMP and Sarah NEFF had a son, George STUMP born abt 1823 to a Catherine Jane NEFF born abt 1822 in Hardy Co. They also moved with John and Sarah in 1852 to IL. So you have another George STUMP married to a Catherine NEFF. This Catherine Jane NEFF was the daughter of Abraham NEFF and Elizabeth SHOOK. Abraham was a son of Jacob. Jacob and Michael were brothers. Michael NEFF was the father of Sarah Neff. So George and Catherine were second cousins. Jacob NEFF brothers Michael NEFF Abraham NEFF 1st cousins Sarah NEFF Catherine J NEFF 2nd cousins George STUMP I hope that is all correct. It is new to me and if anyone else knows anything else please let me know. I am still studying the WILSONs in Hardy Co also who are connected to my Elizabeth Stump daughter of John and Sarah. Elizabeth married Jesse H. WILSON. Thanks to all the good researchers there and all the help I go when I asked for it. I slept good last night now that my NEFFs and STUMPs have a place to rest and are not floating around in my head. Diana in AK

    2. Kathy Buckingham
    3. I am also grateful for the work offered by Gloria....I am descended from the four Michaels, specifically through Simon P. Stump, son of Michael and Elizabeth Bush Stump. Simon's daughter, Elizabeth Stump (b. 9-4-1854) married William Gates (b. 6-20-1853 in Gallia co. OH). Their son (my grandfather) Earl E. Gates was born in 1882 in Burning Springs, Wirt Co, WV). The Gates line is one of my brick walls. If anyone has an information on William Gates (his father is Thomas Gates, listed in the 1850 Wirt Co., WV census at 30 years of age, as Postmaster) and their ancestors I sure would be grateful!! 3. Searching for information about Eliza STUMP. According to census records she was born circa 1823 in Ohio. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Maryland. On 22 Feb. 1864, in Coshocton Co., Ohio, Eliza married my gr gr grandfather, George E. WARD (He was a widower.) I don't know if STUMP was Eliza's maiden name or her surname from a previous marriage. From a letter that has survived the last 131 years, we know that Eliza had a sister, Mary A. ESWORTHY. In 1868 Mary (widow of John) was living in Hopewell Twp., Muskingham Co., Ohio with her three children - Melinda, Mary and Joseph. It is possible that Eliza and Mary had a sister named Salemy (Salemna) who was married to Thomas CARTNAL. In 1870 the CARTNAL family (including a daughter also named Melinda) were living in Althen's Portage, Clark Co. Illinois. I am hoping to find out how Eliza is connected to the STUMP line. I would appreciate hearing from the "experts" on the STUMP list :) Judy in Iowa

    2. This probably isn't your Elizabeth Stump, but I have an Elizabeth "widow of J Stump" buried at Salem's Ellerton Cemetery, Montgomery County OH. She died 2/7/1925 at age 77 y 11m 2 d. Husband Jacob Stump is buried same place. Born 5/3/1836 (by math) died 9/27/1911 age 75 y 4 m 24 d. I have him as an "assorted unattached" Stump since I don't know who he belongs to. Jan T

    2. I'm green with envy seeing all of the great Stump lineages that have been posted. I am quite literally "stumped" on my Stump ancestor and have been for YEARS. I hope someone may know something about her family. Anna STUMP was b. abt 1810 or 1811 and m. 1835 Cyrus SELLERS of Wolmesdorf, Berks Co., PA. They were married at Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church which is actually just over the county line in Lebanon Co., but many or most of the members were from the adjoining area of western Berks Co. (around Marion Twp., Stouchsburg/Womelsdorf, etc.). There are no baptismal records for her nor many Stump records at all in that church. Anna and Cyrus had several children born in or near Marion Twp., Berks Co. Perhaps these names will give someone a clue: John, Cyrus Jr., William Henry, Anna, Sarah and Mary J. Anna and Cyrus removed to Iroquois Co., IL about 1860. I've not been able to find any appropriate Anna in the Stump wills in Berks Co. From the 1830 census it looks as if the Stump families in Berks Co. who had a daughter of the "right" age for Anna would be the following: Henry Stump--Bethel Twp. Jacob Stump--Bethel Twp. John Stump--Heidelberg Twp. Jonas Stump--Albany Twp. Michael Stump--Upper Tulpehocken Twp. Peter Stump--Reading Samuel Stump--Heidelberg Twp. Samuel Stump--Greenwich Twp. John Stupp--Tulpehocken Twp. David Stump--Heidelberg Twp. Do any of you know anything about the families above? If I can find out the children in those families and know there is no Anna, that will help me narrow what has been a very difficult search. Negative information is sometimes quite helpful! Thanks for any help! Judy
