The following is information that I made note of on a recent visit to the LDS Library in Mesa, Arizona. STUMP, Lenard, BURGEN, Mary, Married 04 Aug 1791, Bourbon, KY. Source: Kentucky Marriages early to 1800; Liahona Research, Inc.; Bountiful, Utah 84011; ISBN # 1-877677-30-2 (Sorry, I missed noting the page number) Also, here's a couple more from the same source. STUMP, Leonard, KINSLER, Sally, Married 17 Jan 1797, Harrison, KY. STUMP, George, KIMBERLAIN, Mary E., Married 26 Nov 1795, Washington, KY. Progress on my own branch of Stumps in Boone and Campbell Counties in KY was minimal (as usual) but I hope this information is of help to those who claim the above people. I do have several questions, however. You list the wife of George STUMP b. 1787 as Catherine NEFF. From other researchers I have been told that his wife was Rhoda SCIENSENTAFEE ( many different spellings of this name). I wonder if he had two wives? I do show that Michael STUMP b. 1708/1709 married a Catherine NEFF. Do you have any idea as to the relationship between these two Catherines? There seems to be a lot of inter-marrying among the NEFFs and the STUMPs. Thanks again for your help. Emme Ratcliff Leslie P.S. Do you happen to have any more on Henry WILSON and his wife Martha?

Ellie, I have a James Stump, 1854-1939, though I don't know his middle initial, but Perry has been used in the family before. James was the son of Lewis Edwin Stump, born in Dallas County, Iowa I believe. LeRena Stump Yakima, WA

Is anyone familiar with the family of Zacharias STUMP and Nancy Catharine CROMER. They are buried at Blymire Cemetery, Dallastown, York, PA. Next to his grave are stones that are almost unreadable for Clayton, Chauncy, Sterling and Mary STUMP. Is anyone familiar with this family? Bob Givens
Hi! Some other derivitives of Stump are Stub, Stup and Stupp. Those were from German records. I have the books "Palatines to America" by Hank Jones, Jr. and they include German immigrants who came over from 1710 -1827? There are 647 families and it was researched in Germany (actual records). If anyone would like me to do a look-up, please let me know after the 14th (I am unsubscribing due to vacation) and I would be happy to. My husband's Stup was Martin who came to New York in 1710 and lived in the Tulpehocken Area. They then moved to Berks Co.,& Franklin Co. PA and then to Summit Co, OH. The line goes: Martin, Abraham, Michael, John, Ephraim, Clarence, Clarence and James. Hope to hear from some of you. I have some old info to post on other Stumps when I come home. Jeanne Leita Stump

I still really need to know where the MASSEY came in because I can't eliminate it until I know where it came from and why they finally discarded it. I wish I could see the process where they came to the decision. How about you? Diana in AK

But, there is several in this family that I haven't accounted for, another Joseph for one. All my Daniels, and a Jacob. The obits came from Warren County, Indiana. "1883 HISTORY LIBERTY TOWNSHIP--WARREN COUNTY PHILANDER T. STUMP, born May 6, 1837, is the son of Joseph and Mary (Reed) Stump; the former born in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1800, the latter in 1801. In 1829, the father of our subject entered forty acres in Fountain County, Ind., on which he built a cabin, and which he improved. This he sold, and purchased 160 acres in Medina Township, in this county. Five years later, he purchased a farm in Liberty Township, on which he lived and farmed. Philander T. Stump worked at the plow and attended school three months of each year until his marriage, April 17, 1861, to Mary E. Van Reed, born December 11, 1842, the daughter of Levi R. and Amelia (Bowman) Van Reed. This union was blessed with ten children--Lillie E., Clara M., Dora B., Amelia M. (deceased) Sarah C., Lizzie M., Mary E., Bertha V., Florence and John H. Mr. Stump resides on the old farm. He raises some stock, is an active Republican, and is very generally esteemed." Please note Philander T. Stump's daughter also married a Philander Stump, but I have been unable to figure out where the son-in-law came from.
I am looking for an IL Stump. I noticed Vermillion Co IL in some of the recent postings. Douglas Co is not so far from Vermillion, perhaps the family spread out? My niece has been trying to get information from her grandmother but it is too late. She either doesn't want to tell her or her memory is gone. I suspect both. So this request is for information that is not too far back in time. Does anyone have a Vergil/Virgil Stump who would have married in Douglas Co IL around 1901 - 1905. His wife's name could be Ida Mae Smith. The only census that I can find is 1900 Douglas Co, Bowdre Twp. A Virgil Stump is 17 years old and living with his parents. Joseph Stump, born Feb 1851 in KY Sarah M. Stump, born Mar 1853 in PA a brother Harve P. Stump age 22. Joseph Stump lists his father born KY and mother born VA Joseph and Sarah had 4 children, 3 living. I don't know if this is the correct family but it is all I have found in the area. Can anyone shed any light on this family? I am hoping that someone with IL Stumps might know. Can't find the roots if I can't find the Stump.
JOSEPH L. STUMP Joseph L. Stump was born November 5, 1845, and departed this life December 16, 1919, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 11 days. The subject of this sketch was united in marriage with Miss Sarah E. Jones August 4, 1865 and to this union were born six children, four of whom preceded him to the world beyond, as did the wife who passed away less than four months ago. Mr. Stump spent his entire life in this county, holding the sheriff's office for four years; working as foreman of the construction branch of the Carmichael Company for eighteen years, and as long as health permitted, being a man of influence in the community. He heard the call of the country and enlisted in the 72nd regiment Indiana Volunteers, Co. F, but was transferred to Co. H, where he served until the close of the war, being in the service more than three years. He was naturally strong in body and mind, having commanding influence over men, but for some time has been in very poor health, having had four strokes of paralysis, and last winter came near dying from gas suffocation. His final illness was of short duration, and came even before the nearest relatives were aware of it. He is survived by two brothers: Orcino of Boswell, and Clifford of Williamsport. Two sisters: Mrs. Matilda Crawford, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs Susan Thomas of Ambia. Also two sons: George B., of Greenberg, Kansas, and James Marion, of Williamsport, Indiana and one grandson. The funeral services were held at the residence last Thursday at 2 p.m., December 18, by the Rev. John E. McCloud, and interment took place in the Highland cemetery. NOTE: According to Joseph's Obit, there are three of his children who are unaccounted for. Also, his sister Matilda still lives. However, according to the obit I received, she died in 1879. This leaves to to question if this Joseph is in fact Lemuel L. Stump's son, for Matilda's obit names her parents as Lemuel L. and A.D. Stump. There is also the chance of a typo.
