I don't any more information other that what was given on the Vermilion Co. Stump marriages. I will check my other books I have on Vermilion Co. and see if there is any additional information I can share with you. Daryl Bruner
Hello, fellow reseachers. I, too, wish to thank Gloria Husk for all the work she has provided to the family. I may be able to add to it regarding Hampshire County and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Everything from this point is taken from a volume called "The Family Stump A Record of The Three Jesses" by Eileen Hiser Dove. Hans Michael Stump arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Phoenix" on September 30, 1743, with his wife Maria Catherine and a young daughter named Maria Catherine. He established his home on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River in what was then Spotsylvania County Virginia. (During the time he lived on this land it became Orange , Frederick , Augusta and Hampshire Counties. After his death it changed to Hardy County, Virginia as it remained until 1860 when it became Hardy County West Virginia) John (Hans) Michael Stump was an aquaintance of George Washington, and possibly Lord Fairfax. George Washington at age 16 surveyed the Stump tract. Michael(i) and Catherine had 3 sons and 3 daughters: (ii) Maria (Mary) Catherine b. Oct 22, 1741, Schlaitdorf Germany m. Jacob Brake Sr. They had one son, Michael Brake. (ii) Michael II b. 1744 m. Sarah Hughes 1763 Children are (iii) Michael III , m. Magdaline Richards (iii) Leonard m. Mary Morrow (iii) Jesse m. Susannah (American Indian) (iii) Catherine m. George Whitecotton (iii) Sarah m. Jacob Simons (iii) Elizabeth m. Felix Welton (ii) George (b. April 8, 1748 may have been named for either George Washington or George Fairfax who were surveying the land about this time) m. Elizabeth Massey. Children are: (iii) George, of whom there is no marriage record. (iii) John, m. Prudence Parsons, Sept 6, 1812 (iii) Emelia (iii) Magdaline (iii) Catherine, married a Cook (iii) Elizabeth, married a Nicholas (iii) Sarah, married Peter Alkier (iii) Charlotte maried a Philips (ii) Leonard b. November 21, 1749, d. November 19, 1828. m. Elizabeth See. Children are (iii) Elizabeth b. July 31, 1774 m. Michael Yoakum (iii) Mary Ann b. January 10, 1776 m. Jonathan Hutton (iii) Catherine b. June 16, 1778 m. Solomon Harness (iii) Hannah b. April 24, 1780 m. William Dyer (iii) George, b. July 11, 1782, died at age of 28 years (iii) Christina, b. Oct 22, 1784, m. (iii) Catherine (iii) George b. 1793 (iii) Jonathan b. 1794 (iii) Sally b. 1795 (iii) Rebecca b. 1797 >From here, this volume traces the line of Jesse Sr., Son of Michael II (ii)and Sarah Hughes. Married to Susannah, Jesse had these children: (iv) Rebecca b. 1810 m. Noah Kesner (iv) Sarah b. July 4, 1811 (iv) Christine b. 1813, m. Permila Kimble, Lavina Ketterman Subsequent listings concentrate on the Jesse Sr. lineage. Occassionally, a branch would fall from the family tree and the wind would blow it westward. If any of these names sound familiar, or if you are trying to locate someone from the Stump family in the 1800's in Grant and Pendleton Counties of West Virginia, e-mail me and I'll try to search it out. Barbara - It is very likely our Stump families connect...does your line go back to Michael Stump(f) who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1743, and died in Hampshire County, Virginia (which I think is now Mineral County, WV)? I'm sure you have done this, but, if not, you can determine this by following your lineage in Don Norman's files, Hacker's Creek Descendents website. Also, I just recently posted my family's direct line to Hans Stumpff on the Calhoun County page (actually the website hostess typed it all, and translated my father's into a current genealogy program... thank you Linda Fluharty). My father's book was legally sold, as far as I know, by someone who had a copy. It was published in 1975, and my father sold and donated many copies. We still have a few in the family, but are not selling them. I've donated a few copies to libraries in WV. Diana - There are some Elizabeth Stumps mentioned in my father's book, but only as wives and daughters of his Stump line. Have you checked out Don Norman's files? If not, you might try to find your Elizabeth Starr there. Someone else wrote an e-mail expressing difficulty researching Stumps, I think back in Germany. I seem to have erased this message without first copying it, I'm sorry to say, and will be glad to respond if someone sends it in again. I can say off the top of my head that my father did correspond directly with a library in Germany to establish his overseas branch, and I'll be glad to share that address. Even though it was 30 years ago, it's probably the same library. Gloria - Hi. Thanks for the welcome, and for directing me to this list. Emma Campbell

Hi Mickey, I have both Stump and Ingmire family from Hocking County, Ohio. Ingmires are from Maryland, look for Thomas and Snowden Ingmire in Anne Arundel County. I'd guess your Ingmire connection went to Oklahoma by way of Texas. Just a guess, but I know of an author named Frances Ingmire who is from Texas. I wrote to her a few times many years ago but never received an answer. However, I still see her books advertised so she's likely still around somewhere. I don't believe she ever wrote about the Ingmires, but that may have been her married name. I presume your Stumps didn't go to Oklahoma from Ohio. I've read of a Frederick Stump who took off from the family farm in Pennsylvania one day and headed south. I've seen his descendants on census in Russell County, VA. Also read that at least part of this Stump branch settled around Nashville where I believe old Frederick was killed by Indians. Since so many of my family members moved on to Texas from Tennessee, it may be a clue. Hopefully you'll pick up the right scent and keep on the trail until you track them down. By the way, my Ingmires and Stumps were from Maryland and Pennsylvania before moving on to Ohio. Good luck with your research. Charla Marchione
Jan T. These might be my STUMPs. The book you quoted said they had migrated "south" to Kentucky. Where did they migrate from? Maryland? Hello all. I'm trying to locate information about my family. I have run into a stopping place. Several of the listing sound as if the might fit but know way to prove it. His name was Abe Stump, (born and abandoned or orphaned during or just after the Civil War) birth date: about 1880 by math. Died March 18, 1930, in Cuthbert, Texas, Mitchell County Texas. Was married to Mary Catherine Ball Frazier, who died March 5, 1938 He had 9 children, Willie Stump, Charlie Stump, James Henry Stump,Lizzie Stump, Maggie stump , Frances Stump, Elbie Stump, and my grand father Acie Caper Stump born Jan 14 1900. If any of this is familiar to anyone please post me. I'm sure I meet up with someone somewhere during the Civil War. Thanks Lynda Stump Taylor
Hi Emma Welcome To The Other Stump Family, I Figured You Would Jump Over Here, Gloria Powers Husk http://www.gloryway.com http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/u/s/Danny-L-Husk/index.html
Hello, Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member of this list. My name is Emma (Stump) Campbell. My father, Thurman Stump, published a book about our WV Stump lineage in 1975 ("Michael Stump Sr. of Virginia, 1709 - 1768"). I keep running into information from his book on the internet on various genealogy sites, and was amazed to hear it had just been sold through the eBay Auction. My father would be surprised to see how big genealogy has become, and would be right in the think of it if he were still alive (he died in 1981). I'm researching other family lines, but am always interested in new, historical information on the Stumps. I'm interested in anecdotal histories, reasons for migrations (enjoyed today's posting re. Austin Cooper's book by Jan T.). I also appreciate hearing of any corrections to research in my father's book, so I can keep it updated. I've only just subscribed today, so have probably missed out on a lot, but hope to catch up. Emma Campbell
I was really looking up something else in Austin Cooper's TWO CENTURIES OF BROTHERSVALLEY CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN 1762-1962, when I glanced down and saw some Stump names on page 374 under Appendix A, MIGRATIONS INTO THE SOUTH. It begin discussing the time period from 1780 to 1800. "Why so many of them left Stony Creek and Bruedersthal is not definitely known but it is believed that the hard winteres that seem to cover a span of about 15 years was largely responsible for it..." Another possibility mentioned is land survey problems. "KENTUCKY. 1780: George Drake, Oliver Drake, settled north of Frankfort; William Greathouse, John Greathouse, John Hershberger, George & John Shenifelt, Simon Shaver, JOHN STUM (STUMP), ADAM STUM, Casper Hoover, Pence Leaman, James Parker, Henry Shidler." So these were Dunkards (Brethren) who left Somerset County for Kentucky that year. Presumably John & Adam were related somehow. Jan T
In a great new book, "Rain, Mud & Swamps" by Gary L. Scheel, a book about the 31st Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment that is well researched and documented. I found the following entry. GIDEON STUMP, a Private from Canaan (Gasconade Co) MO. He died of wounds at Battle of Arkansas Post, Arkansas. This appears to be a brother of my gg grandfather, James Perry Stump and a son of Leonard & Mary Stump (both born in VA) who arrived in Gasconade Co. sometime before 1841. Does anyone have more information? Ellie Stites Swanger EllieSS@aol.com

Judy, Re: Your inquiry about IL Stumps. In searching for possible relatives of my Anna Stump who with husband, Cyrus Sellers, came to Iroquois and Vermilion Co., IL from PA, one source that might be helpful to your search is the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Web site on earlly Illinois land sales and then look at the counties of interest to you. I don't know the URL offhand, but it should be readily findable through a search engine or Cyndi's list. Judy in Nashville
Hi folks, Since there is a bit of activity on the list of late...I thought I'd re-ask if there are any Stampf searchers out there and if they have any information that relates to the info below: Friedrich Stampf and his wife Mathilda arrived in New York approximately 1860 from Germany with their infant son and firstborn: Henry R. Stampf. They had the following children in Brooklyn, NY: Charles b. 1863; Fredrik b. 1865; Augustus b May 1868; Frank b. August 1871; Edward b. August 1872 and Rosa b. March 1876. This according to 1880 Census. On 1900 Bklyn, NY Census, Mathilda is listed as widowed, age 62 and listed with her are August, age 32, S; Frank, age 29, S; Edward, age 27, S; and Rosie, age 24, S. All the males listed as Day Laborers...women show no occupation. I hope to find more relatives out there... Joanie
