Hi again! Several have also asked me about the surname of NEFF in the Patriotic Index.. Since there were several STUMPS that also intermarried, here is the list. Ellie ================================================ If you see any patriot that may be yours, you may want to send for a copy of an application that some dear lady used to become a member. They are about $10 each.. but the references are usually very good. When I request a copy, I always ask for the latest copy that has the most information, especially the children listed.. If possible I ask for the child that I descend from.. but that isn't always possible of course.. I am the AOL Online Coordinator for DAR Lookups and have about 13 women working with me to help inquirees find their patriot. We report to the National DAR office and I have a contact in each state to help anyone find a chapter and to help with DAR applications.. If a patriot isn't listed, it doesn't mean he didn't serve, only that no one has gone in on his line.. That may be for you to do!!! <G> The codes are fairly simple, but just in case: a=before or ante b=born c=about or close to d=death m=married p=after (post) PNSR=Pensioner.. PS=patriotic service.. this could mean the patriot fed the troops, kept them in fresh horses, water, or firewood. It could also mean they housed them, took care of their medical needs.. .. ran errands and was a general all-around "Friday" for the Revolutionary cause.. A woman could be listed as patriot too.. such as Martha Washington. She is listed because she had descendants that have become members.. but George isn't listed, because he and Martha didn't have children.. If you have any more questions, happy to help.. here goes: NEFF: Abraham: b a 1725 PA; d p 1792 PA; m Maria (mary_ Hershey, Patriotic Service from PA Benjamin: b 5-16-1734 CT: d 5-25-1806 CT; m. Thanks to Ellie for her great information! I have been sending to the DAR for about two years and never once thought about "asking for the latest copy that has the most information, especially the children listed.. If possible I ask for the child that I descend from.." Sure makes me feel kind of dumb!! There probably has been many, many applications from different descendants and I never once thought about that. A whole new world has opened up!! I am trainable! I recently sent for information and sent $5 for each - wasn't notified of any price changes. This is my ancestor. I was looking for Johannes instead of John! Are there any "cousins" on this list? A deed I came across recently, from Montgomery Co, TN shows a 2200 acre parcel of land exchanged hands over the years from Samuel Thornton to Christopher Stump and then to Alsey Pace, the husband of Sally Alice Stump. Alsey was the father of a Christopher Stump Pace. I believe that the above Christopher Stump may have been the Christopher who was the brother of the famous Frederick Stump of Nashville. And I am wondering if Sally Alice could have been this Christopher Stump's daughter. Christopher b 1720 d 1778, spouse unknown, had 3 children that I know of: Leonard b bef. 5/1759, Margaret b 1761 and George b bef. 6/1773. It is believed that Sally Alice Stump was born around 1780, perhaps earlier. Some have shown this Sally (or Sarah) as a daughter of Frederick Stump but I have seen no evidence and she is not mentioned in his will. Does anybody have a clue? Gordon W. Pace

Hi folks, I have a census listing for 617 Humboldt Street, in Brooklyn, NY in the year 1900 for Mathilda STAMPF age 62 and still living with her were her sons August, age 32; Frank, age 29; Edward, age 27 and her daughter Rosie (also seen as Rosa elsewhere), age 24. The men's occupations were "day laborers". Would anyone have these STAMPFS...possibly sometimes known as STUMPF....in their trees? Maybe looking at them as Stumpf would unravel something...but they, so far have clearly been listed as STAMPF everywhere. Joanie

Yesterday evening I was reading through my grandmother's scrap book (she saved alot of obituaries and other interesting events) when I came across information about Stump/Neighbors. Here is the info I have garnered regarding this group: Levi Stump was married to a Mahalia Rush--they resided in Indiana when they left for Kansas in September 1866 by covered wagon and settled in the Spring River Valley east of Columbus in 1867. In 1868/9 Levi and his father (no name mentioned) erected and operated a corn mill on Spring River. The mill was destroyed by flood in 1875. Mahalia Rush Stump died 1869. Levi Stump died in 1873. When Levi died he left their children in the care of his brother, George: Arminda b. 18 June 1862 Shelby Co., Indiana; one small brother; and one sister. Arminda Stump married George R. Neighbors in 1896. They resided in Pittsburg, also on a farm near Crestline & in 1908 in Columbus. They had 4 children: Neville, Ruby, Myrtle and Minnie. Three daughters, Neville, Ruby and Myrtle preceded Arminda in death. (Myrtle and Minnie were twins--and Myrtle died Feb 1940) Minnie married Reverand Wm. J. Marshall--resided in Iowa and Colorado. Also considered as family--Will Vandament (my grandfather) who was raised by the Neighbors--and Belle Kapple. My grandfather's stories about the Neighbors is this: He "was boarded out to Uncle George and Matilda Neighbours when some 4 1/2 years old at $1.25 per week--this must have been in 1888. They were farm tennants of Belle Markum, the farm being the east half of the northeast of sec. 2 twp range 25, Cherokee Co., KS--a mile south of Lawton, KS, near Spring River--a quarter mile or so south of the mouth of Cow Creek. Maybe 1889 moved to Snyder place about a mile south of Waco School house--had aimed to start school here, maybe did only for a short while if at all. Moved to Stiles place in River bottom, quarter mile or so south across river from Markum place. Uncle George and Ed Altice--Ed being the step son of George's sister--Aunt Net having married Sylvester Altice. By the way Aunt had married the widower Levi Stump. Levi was the father of Arminda Stump Neighbours. Levi died leaving Aunt Net-Annetti-a forty acres of land which according to one story made her an attractive offering to Altice. While logging on this Stiles place Ed Altice wanted to use timber royal belong to landower Uncle George Stamp and as Uncle George Neighbour not hear to it--Ed poisoned "Baldy" a fine dapple grey horse belonging to Uncle George Neighbours. Adam Grim a neighbor purchased a rope for hanging Ed Altice and it was all Uncle George Neighbours couls do to keep them from hanging Ed Altice. Ed left for parts unknown and was not heard from." My grandfather left some other wonderful stories about the "chuckles of wagons--each one had a different sound. He mentions the Snyder place; an old scotch janitor by the name of Howatt--one of his sons was peg legged and became a rather famous petty thief. Another son Alex Howatt was afterward head of mine workers union District #14. Just thought I'd pass on some of the old timers words... Suzie

Hi Folks, Just wanted to say that I was recently given wonderful news by a fellow lister on my NYC List....she found my STAMPF, FREIDRICH and wife and baby son on a passenger list! Changed the immigration date I had by two years. They immigrated from Bremen to NY 28 Apr 1862 on the ship "HERMINE"....I've sent for a copy of the passenger list from the Natl Archives! What fun to finally know where they immigrated from and when. Joanie
