    3. Hi Marge, I'm here on the list, also at marchpubs@home.com. I've been trying to connect my Ohio Stumps to Berks County, PA family. There's also a Stump line down in Maryland who appear to be English derived from German roots, but can't connect with them either. Are you working on either of these branches? 3. Hi, List.....Just this weekend found a query in Pennsylvania Dutch "Queries" dated 14 May 1999 from a Charla Marchione - but she did NOT leave any Email address. She listed "Stump family of John, Jacob, Philip, believe from Berks Co., PA, to western PA to Hocking CO., OH. May have been sons of a Samuel Stump." I would like to contact Charla, since I have a Jacob Stump who in early 1800s census records lived very close to a Philip. Does anyone know any Charla Marchione doing Stump research? Thanks for hooking us up. Marge Rice, Joliet, IL

    3. Hello and Happy Holidays! I am wondering if someone in this county could look up a death cert or obit for me? I am looking for parentage of a gal who is listed with two different maiden names in two different county published histories. Ida Mae STUMP b. 24 May 1865 area unknown d. 4 May 1949 in Pulaski Co, IL , m. 6 Sep 1880 in Montgomery Co, IL to John Samuel BUNKER. I have a copy of her marriage in which she is listed as Stump. I also have copy of birth/ death certs of a couple of her children in which she is listed as a Stump. I also have a copy of page 99 of the Pulaski Co, IL history that has her pic and John S. Bunker and names her as a Stump. HOWEVER, I also have a copy of pages 376-379 and page 382-383 of "Counting Kindred" by E.E. & M.L. Deppen. In the Anna Deppen Yeakley Branch section on page 382 it states that "Gen 5th- Harriet Stonebraker m. Chas. Bunker (twin of Sophia). The Bunker family moved to Ark in 1887. (Geo S. Stonebraker sold to Chas. Bunker, Sept 13, 1855 in Mont. Co., IN.) Issue:(10) Gen. 6- James Bunker killed by Jesse James gang in Fairgold, Ark, m. (c.); John Bunker m. Ida BROWN; Caroline Bunker m. Oliver Peacock (c.) res. Alamo, Ind; Martha Bunker, b. Mar 22 1855; d. 1909 m. (1) Emory Clark (2) James Harwood, b. 1855; d. May 1937; Mary Bunker m. James BROWN; Laura Bunker m. John Cornman; Geroge Bunker (s.); Arkansas Bunker m. Wm. Sikes; Lovina Bunker m. Isaac Wright (c.) res. Alamo, Ind; and Lou Ann Bunker , d. (s.). Gen. 6th- John m. Ida Brown, res. Okla. Issue: (3); Gen. 7th- Clarence, Roy and Howard Bunker." Now I do have a Clarence Bunker as a child of John and Ida Bunker..but don't have a Roy or Howard listed for their children. So my question is...with as secretive as the family seems to have been about Ida...why was she referred to as Ida Brown in one book and listed as Ida Stump in everything else???? There were many Stump families around the Bunkers in Mont. Co. but she is not listed among them on the copies of census pages I have. Could she have taken that name after being taken in by a Stump family?? Any help on this would be appreciated! Best Wishes, Gayle gayle@olypen.com http://www.olypen.com/gayle

    1. Cuthbert Stump VA to MO 1800's
    2. Does anyone know the ancestry of Cuthbert Stump, b. 1/2/1809 Hardy Co, VA, d. 7/12/1896 Columbia Co, OR, m. Paulina, b. 1807? Cuthbert Stump arrived in Lawrence Co, MO in 1834. In Missouri he was closely associated with Edmund A. Pace, son of Sally (Sarah) Stump and Christopher Stump Pace, but I don't know if or how he was related to Sally Stump. I believe Sally is descended from the Stumps of Heidelberg, PA (Christopher Stump). Gordon W. Pace

    3. Hi Everyone, I've been following the Christopher Stump discussion with interest. My gggg grandfather, John "Adam" Stumpf was married to Maria Eisenhauer. One old genealogy (100 years) suggests that Christopher Sr.was "Adam's" father but I have yet to confirm this and doubt that this is correct. However, one of the younger Christopher's is a possibility. John Adam Stumpf was born in 1776 in Berks Co. and then migrated to Lebanon and then on to Indiana Co. where he died in 1855. One researcher has told me that Christopher's older son, Christopher, had no children yet the will that was shown indicates that there were heirs. Does anyone have any information that might help? A Christian Stumpf and his wife were sponsers at the Baptism of some of Adam's children. Christopher Stump, Sr. died in 1779 and his will, dated 1769 named two of his children by the name of Christopher. The first was described as deceased and the second, along with a brother Leonard (Leonart) were designated as heirs to his plantation in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster Co, PA. My question is does anyone know anything about this latter Christopher Stump? He was apparently born between 1750 to 1765 as he was not of age in his father's will. Who were his wife and children? I am trying to find the father of my direct ancestor Sally (Sarah) Stump who married Alsey Pace and named a son Christopher Stump Pace. They were also given land by a Christopher Stump. Gordon W. Michael Neff, from Michelfeld, Baden, Germany, was accompanied by his wife and children, one of which was Anna Catherine Neff that married Michael Stump on 10 Sep 1739, at Tulpehocken Luthern Church}. (An examination of these records gives fairly conclusive proof that these two families originated in Schwaigern, Germany and Michelfeld, Germany and migrated to Lancaster County, Pa. In the case of the Neff family we have two children, Anna Catherine and Leonard Neff born in Michelfeld, children of Michael Neff. Anna Catherine married Michael Stump and Leonard Neff married Elizabeth Feg. Both these families disappeared from Lancaster county between 1739 and 1747. Two couples of the same names appear in Hampshire county living next door to each other in 1748. What are the odds of such a coincidence? We know that Michael Stump Sr's wife was named Catherine and we also know that Leonard Neff of Hardy county was married to an Elizabeth. It is well known that many of the families in Hampshire County came from the Tulpehocken area of Pennsylvania. What proof does Thurman Stump provide to prove that the Michael Stump born in Eberbach, Germany in 1709 migrated to Hampshire County? He doesn't have any circumstancial evidence of such a tie in. He only has the date of birth. No wife, no children, no brothers and sisters migrating. No record connecting Michael Stump Sr to Eberbach. If he didn't come on the Phoenix in 1743 when and how did he come? In all fairness to Thurman Stump, he completed his book in 1975 and apparently did not have access to the Schwaigern information. I'm sure if he had he would have reached a different conclusion.)

    1. Christopher Stump will 1769
    2. J W Neff
    3. CHRISTOPHER STUMP Of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (From Frederick Stump, the rest of the story, by Julia Cook Guice 1991) Christopher Stump’s will was translated by Elizabeth Kieffer, Archivist, Fachenthal Library, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, ca 1963. The original was taken from the Pennsylvania German January 1903, beginning on page 229. The following preliminary and explanatory remarks by the editor preceded the will. 1.. Without giving this curious yet typical Colonial Pennsylvania-German will in English, it will help readers to know that "vermache" means "bequeath"; "liegendom und beweglichen Vermogen" is real and personal property; and "farbigton Bub" is colored boy. 2.. This will was copied from the original now in the possession of Mr. Henry Stump, now a resident of Stouchburg, Berks County, Pa., aged 83, the great-grandson of the testator on Leonhart’s line. 3.. The "house" spoken of in the will, where testator lived, is still standing and it with the farm bequeathed to Leonart, is now the property of Mr. Thomas Becker of Millback, Lebanon County, where the farm is located. (Thomas Becker is descendant of Leonhart. 4.. Quite a number of present day prominent families of Lebanon and Berks Counties are connected with original Stump. 5.. The original testator is said to have been a man of remarkable physical strength, being over six feet in stature. He accompanied Conrad Weiser to the Midwinter Indian Conference of the Six Nations in Northern New York. 6.. The testator was twice married and his frequent references to and conditions concerning inheritance of second wife as widow, is noteworthy. He had sixteen children in all, several sets bearing same name, and owned several colored slaves as per his will. He left his eldest son one shilling as birthright. 7.. The second son, Frederick is doubtless the celebrated founder of Fredericksburg, formerly Stumpstown, of Lebanon County, whose questionable escapades there made him flee his native heath to appear later in the wilds of Tennessee as a notorious Pioneer. See former issue of Magazine (The Pennsylvania-German Vol II April, 1901, No. 2 containing pilgrimage article, "Over an Old State Road." The following notes were made by the translator, Elizabeth Kieffer: The formal opening of the will is of course supplied by the scrivener who wrote the will. It is the usual form of the times. In the translation I have followed the wording of the same form as used in English wills. Careful provision to protect a second wife against discrimination by her step-children is so common, that when such conditions are made, it can almost be assumed that this is a second wife, even if not so sstated. The shilling to the eldest son did not usually imply that he was otherwise disinherited. He may have received his share of the inheritance during his father’s life. WILL OF CHRISTOPHER STUMP 28 Feb 1769 (He died 29 Oct 1779 Will Book C p 578, Lancaster Co, Pa) In the name of the Lord, Amen!
