    1. Some Indiana Stumps (a 1904 letter)
    2. Whilst packing up to go to the Shaw family reunion in Colorado tomorrow, I started rifling through my old Shaw research file to catch up on a line I haven't been researching on recently, and found some STUMP stuff, including a 1904 letter from JESSE W. STUMP: This typewritten letter is on Huntington Business University, Huntington, Indiana, and dated Oct 8, 1904: Mr. T R Hamilton, Lima, Ohio. Dear Sir: Your letter of the 21st, has been received and in reply will say that I will do what I can to oblige you. My father Johnathen [sic] Stump is not dead. He lives on the farm joining mine. He has been married three times, a few years after my mothers death he married Elizabeth Bowman. To this marriage two sons were born, Elmer W. Stump and Eli C. Stump. They are both married and have families. Elizabeth Stump died in the year 1880. A few years later father was married to Mrs. Lorena Chaney a widow woman with whom he is now living. He is in poor health and has not been able to do much work for several years. I am a farmer living on my farm two miles and one half east of the town of Roanoke, R.F.D. I am the third child of my fathers now living. My age is forty seven years. I was married to Isabelle Sites in 1882. Elda my oldest son was born Oct. 19, 1884. He is at home now but is employed by the Wabash Railroad Co. at Aboite. He is not married. My second child Minnie was born July, 23, 1886. She graduated in the common branches here at home in the Beech School and is now finishing up a years course in the Huntington Business University, Huntington Ind. The course consists of bookeeping [sic], shorthand, and typewriting. If you can do anything for her in the way of securing a position we will be very glad. My third child, Frederick was born Aug. 16, 1898. He is a bright little boy of five. If there is anything more I can do for you I will be glad to do so. Wishing you success and hoping to hear from you soon, I remain, Yours very truly , /s/ Jesse [H? Sr?] Stump. If these Stumps belong to any of you, I'd be very interested, since they are my husband's Stumps too. Susannah Stump 1836-1873 married Thomas T. Shaw, 1832-1913. She was a d/o John 1797-1858 & Barbara Summers Stump, who were parents of about 15 children. Susannah Stump Shaw's brother Jonathan Shaw married Sarah Shaw, Thomas's sister. Until I happened to see a copy of a land deed from a Shaw to a Stump or vice versa, I didn't realize that my mother-in-law's ancestors were shirt-tail kin of my father-in-law's ancestors, since the contact was lost between the two families over the years--our batch of Stumps went to Missouri, then to Colorado, and the Shaws went from Iowa to Nebraska to Colorado. Hence I find Stump stuff in my Shaw files--I hadn't made the connection yet. Jan T

    2. Chapter 1 The Michael Stump Family Tree The Word S-T-U-M-P signifies the same meaning in English as it does in German. It means the base of a tree after the tree has been detached. In early History this term was applied to this particular family because of the natural low heavy set physical build. This family was among that great throng which swarmed out of the Black Forests in Germany to meet Julius Caesar and his conquering Army upon whom Caesar conquered the title " Teutonic Barbarians". This family as far as their history can be traced, has been men who exhibited bravery, stability, and undaunted courage. They have been noted for executive ability, scientific knowledge, literature and art. Dr Karl Stump years ago, as a professor in the University of Berlin is credited as Revolutionizing the whole field of psychology in the sphere of science. There are many branches of this family scattered over the entire world. The Crest of the family as recorded in Burke's Peerage is a "Griffin's Head". This was used by the early American Stumps, especially those who landed in Maryland. In 1545 Henry the VIII of England confiscated all the property of the Benedictine Monks at Malmesbury England, and conveyed it to one William Stump who used the material in the huge buildings to construct homes and improve generally the needs of the town. He built for himself what was known as the "Abby House". Carved in the stone over the doorway was the family "Coat Of Arms". Finally Stump conveyed this structure to the citizens of the town for a place to worship. William Stumps eldest son, Sir James Stump left one daughter named Elizabeth who married Sir Henry Kenvett. Another daughter married Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, and by her, he acquired Charlton Park, the seat of the present Earl Of Suffolk and Parks. It appears that this lineage of Stumps coming from England were the first to enter America, though the record claims that a Thomas Stump, age 32, landed in Virginia as early as 05-15-1635. Another record shows that a John Stump settled at Perryville, Maryland, in the year 1700. There it is claimed he died in 1747. A son of his named Henry Stump about the same time moved to Deer Creek in Harford County, Maryland, where he married a Rachel Perkins. to this union were born several children among whom were many notables in the early history of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. One of these men was Herman Stump who was admitted to practice law, and rose to fame in that field. He was elected to the Maryland State Senate. In 1888, he was sent to Congress, and became the Father of our first strict immigration laws, and for several years served as Commissioner General of Immigration. He held this position until 1896 when he resigned, and retired to his home known as "Waverly" in Harford County Maryland. In 1903 he married a lady named Mary Fernandez De Velasco, descendant of an illustrious Spanish family. Herman was a member of the Episcopal Church of England, and was affiliated with the Masonic Fraternity. It is pretty definitely clear that these Stumps were not closely related to the Michael Stump family, yet doubtless if traced back a few generations, we would find them related to the same family tree. The Maryland Stumps were mechanics and traders. Early in the history of the State, a John Stump organized a Company chartered as John J. Stump and Sons. The Company continud to operate through as many as three generations. They were engaged in coastal transportaion. They made whiskey, bought, sold, transported grain and tobacco. In the early days of colonial warfare they were accused of selling grain and flour to the British soldiers. John Jr. was arrested and placed under bond for the duration of the Revolutionary War. The charges finally seemed unfounded and he was exhonorated by a jury of his peers. To be continued.....Chapter II...(ARRIVAL OF STUMPS TO AMERICA) (Posted by Evelyn) Don't forget the SECOND MICHAEL STUMP REUNION June 17th. See you there :)

    2. I am looking for my grandfather's roots. He was Isaac N. Stump, b. 8/23/1868 in Ohio, d.2/1946. He married Mary M. Welch (or Welsh) b. 7/24/1875. They had 7 children--William Howard, Sherman John, Clara Bernice, Edna Mary, Clarence Byron, George Taft (my father) and Elza May. Isaac had a brother, Howard, who in 1946 lived in Charleston, Illinois. I have a few other odds and ends, but as you can see I haven't much. Any help will be greatly appreciated. EMJAYGEE@aol.com

    2. LeRena Stump
    3. Hi, I have been told by three reliable sources that my G-G-G Grandmother, Mary (Burger) Stump left a will in Indiana. The trouble is, no one seems to know where. I assume, possibly wrongly, that she lived near one of her children when she died. Her children lived in Wayne County, Fountain County, Henry County and possibly a few more counties before settling in Warren County. Because she married in 1791, I also assume the odds are that her death was before 1850. Can anyone advise me to the wisest course to proceed? I hate the thought of sending a check to every other county courthouse in Indiana. Thanks, LeRena Stump

Ellie << Subj: ELIAS STUMP Date: 04/23/2000 2:23:23 PM Mountain Daylight Time From: gsb00899@mail.wvnet.edu To: WVHARDY-L@rootsweb.com Hello, I am new to the list and wish to make a query. I am searching for information on my gggrandfather Elias Stump. He was in Hardy Co. in the 1812 tax list. Guessing that he was born in 1795. He was last found in the 1819 census of Lewis Co.. He may have been a s/o Michael Stump 111, that married Magdalene Richards. They had a son born in 1795, and his name was John. Does anyone know if this John was John Elias, and was one in the same? Any tidbit of information could brake through my BRICK wall! Waiting to hear from a new relative. :) Thanking you in advance ever so much! Regards, Evelyn Nicholas Co.
