Hi List, Jacob HAWK(or HAUCK) and Elizabeth STUMP lived in Pleasant Hall, Letterkenny Twp., Franklin Co. PA in 1800, possibly before(there was at least one Jacob Hauk in the 1790 census). According to the obituary of their son Jacob HAUCK of Hagerstown MD who was b. in 1812 and d. in 1904, they had 5 children, two boys and three girls. Their other son John S. HAWK, b. 1808, d. 1878, was my gg grandfather. Jacob the father died in 1813, a year after his son Jacob was born. I have no information re the daughters' names, and no information about the parents of Jacob and Elizabeth. Also have not found burial records for any of them. I suspect Elizabeth may have remarried, since she was left with 5 children to care for. I have searched the church records and card files at Kittochtinny Historical Soc. to no avail. Have nothing on the family from 1813 til 1830, when John began a cabinetmaking business in Chambersburg. Does any one have a connection to these people? Any clues will be appreciated. Bill Hawk

Found on page 448 of BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES - ELKHART TOWNSHIP, name & date of county history not given. All I have are photocopies of 2 pages: 'HENRY STUMP is living upon the farm to which he moved from Michigan, in which State he commenced housekeeping after he was married, December 23, 1866, to Emily A., daughter of Isaac and Barbara Tibbott, the father a native of Ohio, and the mother of Indiana. The farm of Mr. Stump is well improved, with a fine brick residence, good barn and other necessary fittings. He is a native of Seneca County, Ohio, the son of John and Barbara Stump, who came to Indiana in 1856, locating in this township, where they died. They were natives of Pennsylvania. Henry Stump spent his boyhood in Hancock COunty, Ohio, and came to this township in 1857, and taught school that winter. In the spring of 1858, went to California, and in the fall to Oregon; in the spring of 1859, to Klikitat Valley, W. T.; was one of the first four in that valley; he returned to the Willamette Valley, Ore., then went on a prospecting tour to Frazer River, a distance of 800 miles; this venture was a financial failure. Returned to the Willamette Valley late in the fall, where he remained during the winter; in the spring, he went on a prospecting tour with a party of seventy to southeastern Oregon, near the Blue Mountains; here, in Baker County, they discovered the Auburn mines. When ready to return, the company divided into three squads, one company going northwest, were captured by the Indians, and all killed but one. Mr. Stump's party arrived in safety. He returned to the mines the next spring, and worked them that season with ordinary success; spent the following winter in the Willamette Valley, and in the spring, in company with his brother, located within ten miles of the mines with a herd of cattle, where they remained two years, engaged in raising grain and vegetables and caring for their stock, at the end of which time he returned to Elkhart County. Mr. Stump has filled the office Township Assessor seven consecutive years. They have one child -- Minnie M. --living at home." Would anybody happen to know which brother went with Henry to Oregon? A land affidavit I have copies of says David Stump, Daniel Stump, Jesse Stump, all sons of John & Barbara Summers Stump, as well as their sister Anne Stump Kistler and her husband George all went to Oregon to live. Looking for info on J.A.C. STUMP/STOMP, who went to Rising Sun, Ohio Co, IN to care for his soldier brother(?) who was dying of smallpox. The brother (name unknown) recovered, but J.A.C. contracted the disease, died and was buried there. I don't know any of the following: 1. what the J.A.C. stood for 2. the brother's (?) name 3. on which side the brother was fighting 4. which year it was (supposedly during the Civil War) I do know the following: 1. He was born about 1838-39 somewhere in MD. 2. He came to Ohio, eventually settling in Licking Co before 1858. 3. He was mad at his father, so he changed his surname to STOMP. 3. He married Elizabeth STEED about 1859 in Licking Co. 4. He's listed in the 1860 Ohio census as J.A.C. STOMP, married. 5. He & Elizabeth lived in (or near) Pataskala, Ohio, when their son was born on Nov. 28. 1861. Their son might have been originally named Napoleon Bonaparte STUMP/STOMP, but later changed to Robert Willis STOMP. 6. In the mid-1860's he was summoned to Rising Sun, IN to care for his dying soldier-brother. 7. He never returned home, having contracted smallpox, died, and was buried there. 8. His widow, Elizabeth (STEED) STUMP/STOMP, later married Wm. EASTON in Licking Co. Surely, some STUMP family can lay claim to these 2 renegade brothers from MD.
