Hi Sue, Welcome. I cannot find a direct connection to your James Rankin Stroup or his father William that married Carol Rankin. I have 2 John Stroup's (John George & John) listed as sons of Adam Straub (abt 1757-abt 1820) that may or may not be your John. Unfortunately, more information than the names I do not have. But maybe it's a point in the right direction, it oculd also be a false lead. I do wish you luck in your hunt though.
