    3. Today I received the compiled service record for this individual. Here are the highlights: A Philip Stroup enlisted in Co. F, 33rd MS Infantry on April 12, 1862 in Corinth, MS under Col. Hardcastle, for a period of 12 months. Soon after enlistment he became ill, and was sent to the general hospital, absent from his unit in May and June.By Sept. he was back with his unit, only to become ill again. He received a medical discharge on Nov. 25, 1862. This company subsequently joined Co. F, 3rd Battalion MS infantry (see below). The 3rd Battalion MS Infantry had been formed about Nov. 1861 of seven unattached companies and , by the addition of Capt. Charlton's Independent Co., MS Infantry and two companies formed of that part of the 27th Alabama Infantry which was not captured at Ft. Donelson. The Battalion was increased to regiment strength in April of 1862 and called the 33rd MS Infantry. This designation was changed to the 45th MS in November 1862. Later that same month, the men from the 27th Alabama were transferred back to that Regiment. Then in April of 1864, the 45th MS changed back to its original designation - the 3rd Battalion. This Philip Stroup was born about 1817 in NC, making him about 45 at the time of his enlistment. He is said to have moved to Texas with some of his young children after the War. Reiley Kidd Seattle
