Looking for info on Civil War veterans named Stroup who served with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment mustered in York in September 1861. 1) Stroup, John, Pvt Co H; mustered July 11, 1864, as a substitute; discharged June 29, 1865; born Aug 20, 1844; died Dec 1926; a laborer from Williamsport, Lycoming County; 5' 8", auburn hair, blue eyes; shot in the lower jaw and right thigh at the 3rd battle of Winchester; son of Henry & Lucy Stroup; married Elizabeth Stevens October 5, 1880; children: Chester (who disappeared with his father), Clora Bell (b. 10/10/81), Amanda Frances (b. 11/01/83), and Anne Blanche. (b. 05/15/95 - married a Van Horn); an abusive, alcholic man who deserted his wife and went to Indianapolis, Indiana; near the end of his life, was declared incompetent and lived at the Hospital for the Insane in Danville, Pennsylvania; apparently died in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania 2) Stroup, Joseph "Stumpy"; Pvt Co A; mustered Sep 11, 1861; discharged Oct 13, 1864; died Jan 9, 1878, in Baltimore, Maryland; a baker and wharf builder [sic] from York; " he was not over five feet tall" and "chunky", and "...could talk good English but he showed the Dutch in him"; after the war, served one year in the commissary department in Patterson Park, Maryland; son of Francis Stroup; married Mary R.
