Nor did he show up as head-of-household in Juniata Co., PA, in the 1840 census, so, although he was married at age 24 (in 1840 or 1841), he must have been married after the 1840 census was enumerated. Back then, most children lived with their parents until they married, so we would expect to find John's parents living in Juniata Co., PA, in the 1840 census. The only STROUP/STROUB/STRAUB couple living in Juniata Co. in 1840 that is old enough to be John's parents are Peter STROUB/STROUP (b. 1799) and his wife, Catherine (b. 1797/8). http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/PeterStroub-Catherine_.htm >From Peter's will (1847), we know they had a son, John, but based on the numerical data, there is no child born before 1820 in their household in either the 1830 or 1840 census -- but then, the census is not entirely dependable. It seems a distinct possibility to me that your John might be the son of Peter & Catherine (__?__) STROUB/STROUP. If you could find your John living near any of Peter & Catherine's other children in later censuses, it would be strongly supportive that he is their sibling. Children of Peter & Catherine were: Samuel STROUP, b. 1820; m. Sarah __?__; 1850/60/70 census, Juniata Co., PA; 1880 Census, St. Joseph Co., IN Nathan STROUP, b. 1821/2; m. Nancy __?__; 1850 census, Juniata Co., PA Peter STROUP, b. 1825/6; m. Catherine __?__; 1850 Census, Juniata Co., PA John STROUP, b. 18?? Daughters (b. 1820-40): Catherine, Susannah, Elizabeth, Mary Jane Samuel obviously did not "go west," but Nathan or Peter (or any of the sisters) might have. You really need to find John & Mary in the 1850/60/70/80 and 1900 censuses and look for any other STRAUB/STROUB/STROUPs living nearby -- also, for any ALBRIGHTs, who may be easier to find because their name is less likely to be misspelled in the indices. Do you know the names of Mary (ALBRIGHT) STROUP's parents or siblings? Do you know where, even roughly, John & Mary were in any of the censuses?
