The letter was sent from Waterman Ill. I did not know that my gggrandfather, James Elliott, had a cousin Eliza Owen. He did have an Aunt Eliza on both sides of his family. So the dieng woman may have been Elizabeth Stroop Spotts, born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Samuel Stroop and Rebecca Holman, granddaughter of George Stroop. Any information on Elizabeth Stroop Spotts or her family would be appreciated.

    1. Joseph P. Stroup son of Solomon Stroup
    2. Jackie Storay Shaw
    3. Posted on: STROUP Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/s/t/STROUP/queries/31 Surname: Stroup ------------------------- Hello My name is Jackie Storay Shaw. I have been researching this family for the past year. Just recently I obtained copies of Ethel Bell Stroup’s research papers, dated, May 20,1981, concerning the Stroup family. Rick Turner from Greenville, South Carolina shared these with me. So by now her papers are 20 years old, but I am very impressed with the work Mrs. Stroup has done. She states she has researched the Stroup family for some 50 years. I am posting this information and I certainty hope Ethel Bell Stroup or her family does not object. My only intent is to help anyone else searching this particular Stroup family, and possible by doing so, this information will open doors to the past and help establish more family connection. My family link is Solomon Stroup the son of Adam Stroup, the son of Jacob Stroup the son of Adam Stroope, the son of Matthias Stroope. Ethel Bell Stroup establishes this connection in her notes. Also, she gives a list of the children of Solomon Stroup and Nancy Haskins. I already had the list of children from Joseph P. Stroup and Lucy Ann Faulkner Stroup, from census records of 1850, 1860, and 1870, from NC. Although, Ethel Bell Stroup’s notes, has more personal information concerning, the children of Joseph P. and Lucy Ann Stroup. Solomon Stroup was born 1788 in Hoyle’s Creek, Old Lincoln Co., North Carolina, and died 1871 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He married Mary Lowre in March of 1810. Solomon married his second wife Nancy Haskins May 03, 1816 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Nancy was born May 30, 1799, and died March 03, 1879 in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina at the home of her son D.C. Stroup. Children of Solomon and Nancy Stroup 1. Joseph P. Stroup born, 1818, Lincoln Co., NC married Lucy Ann Faulkner 1838. Joseph P. Stroup’s father Solomon moved in the 1830’s from Lincoln County to western North Carolina, Buncombe County, where Solomon was a large land owner at Rock House Creek and Bull Creek, Buncombe County. Solomon moved back to Lincoln with most of his children, but his son Joseph P. Stroup stayed in Buncombe County with his wife Lucy Ann Faulkner Stroup and their children. Joseph died somewhere between 1856 and 1859. Joseph’s widow Lucy Ann stayed behind, on this land that Solomon owned at Bull Creek, Riceville Township, north of Asheville. Solomon willed this land in the 1877 will to his son Andrew J. Stroup, noting that his daughter–in–law, Lucy Ann, was living there with her children and this establishes the connection to this family. ? There is possibly other unknown children between Joseph and Elizabeth 2. Elizabeth Stroup born, 1828. She was in the 1850 census, living in Vestal’s Ford Gaston Co., NC, Elizabeth was 22 years old and also listed in her father’s will of 1868 which, I do not have a copy of. This information comes from notes of Ethel Bell Stroup. 3. Andrew J. or “A.J.” Stroup, born 1829. He is living with parents in the 1850 census. He married Martha Ann Byrd on Nov. 6, 1858. 4. Susanna “ Susan” Stroup born1833. Susan married her cousin Bartlett Stroup and is buried in the graveyard across the road in the woods, from Bartlett Stroup’s farm. 5. David Choosey “D.C.” Stroup born 1836. He was a Confederate Soldier. In the 1860 census, he was in the parent’s home. Married Amanda J. “Mandy”. In 1900, Andrew was 64 years old living in Morganton Township, Burke Co., N.C. 6. Nancy Stroup born 1839, and she was living in the family home in the 1850 census, and also was in her father’s will. 7. Mira Stroup born 1842. Also in the home of parents in the 1850 census. 8. Mary C. Stroup born 1848. She was also in the family home in the 1850 census. Also in the 1868 will of her father she received 1 horse, 1 colt, and 3 head of cattle. Mary was living with a brother in the 1870 census. Children of Joseph Stroup and Lucy Ann Faulkner. 1. Solomon Luther Stroup born 1838 in Georgia, and he married Sara Towe born 1859 in Buncombe Co., N.C. Solomon was 11 years old in the 1850 census living with his parents in Lincoln Co., N.C. In 1859 Luther Solomon was 21 years old and moved to Tenn. Then in Nov. 1869 Solomon moved to Ark. After the death of his father, Joseph P. Stroup. Solomon Luther Stroup died 1879, in Otter, Saline Township, Saline Co, Ark. Ethel Bell Stroup refers to a Lorna La Faye as being the gg-granddaughter of Solomon Luther Stroup and also she uses her as a resource for this family. Also I have found a Phil McCort who is also connected. He is trying to find if there is an Indian connection, to this family by researching the wife’s of the Stroup men. He said, his grandmother had told him, this family had Indian blood. He seems to think the Indian connection may be with Sara Towe Solomon Luther’s wife. Solomon Luther and Sara Towe Stroup’s children: (information from WFT**45) (a) Mary Stroup born about 1860. (b) Joseph Henry Stroup born about 1861. (c) Samuel Stroup born about 1866. (d) Rachel Stroup born about 1869. (e) Ellen Stroup born about 1874. (f) Martha Stroup born about 1876 (g) Sara Stroup born about 1879 2. Moses S. Stroup born 1839 in Georgia. Moses was listed in the 1850 census, he is 9 years old and living in the home of his parents. Married by 1880. In the 1900 census of Marshall Township he is listed with 3 children. 3. Alfred Stroup born 1842. Also in the 1850 census as 8 years old in the home of his parents. 4. John Marshall Stroup born 1844 at Marshall Township, Madison, N.C. In the 1850 census, John Marshall is listed a Marshall age 6. The 1860 census, he is listed as John. Ethel Bell Stroup believed Marshall and John to be the same person, John Marshall. From the notes of Mrs. Stroup. This family may have lived a while at Marshall, NC. A little town in the mountains as they had a son apparently named John Marshall Stroup, born 1844-45. He is called John M. in one record and Marshall in another, but looks like the same son. Also Joseph P. and Lucy Ann had a son, Moses S., who in 1900 lived in Marshall, NC. A little mill town on a fast, flowing river, with mountains so steep on all sides the sun hardly shines except at noon. Marshall Stroup also is believed to have worked in a forge, Elizabethton, Carter Co., Tenn. 5. Nancy Stroup born 1846, is listed in the 1850 census, as 4 years old living with parents. In the 1860 census, Nancy is listed as 14 years old. 6. Samuel Stroup born 1848 is also listed in the 1850 census as being 2 years old. The 1860 census list him as 12 years old and living with parents in Buncombe Co., Swannano, NC. 7. ? Lucy Stroup born 1847. Not listed by name in the 1850 or 1860 census. A Lucy Stroup is listed in the 1870 census as being 23 years old living in the house hold of Lucy Ann Stroup, Joseph P. Stroup’s, widow. She is listed as 51 years old. This child may or maynot belong to Lucy Ann and Joseph P. Stroup. The 1870 census is the only census she appears in. Maybe she was a daughter in law. 8. Samuel Stroup born 1848. He is 2 years old in the 1850 census. Samuel is listed as 12 years old in the 1860 census. In the notes of Ethel Bell Stroup by 1880 Samuel was in Otter, Saline CO, Ark. With 3 sons and no wife. A Thomas Stroup, 60 years old was also in this home, listed as the father. 9. Martha Ann Stroup born February 20,1850. She is listed in the 1850 census as 6 months old. The 1860 census as 9 years old. The 1870 census as 19 years old and also her daughter, Hester Mae Stroup appears in this 1870 census as 6 months old. Although this census does not list Hester, as the daughter of Martha. I know this information from personal knowledge, Bible records, and other family members; Hester Mae is the daughter of Martha Gilliam. I do not know who the father of Hester Mae was. The 1880 census list, as head of house, Lucy A. Stroup 62 years old. Martha A. Stroup 30 years old and Hester M. Stroup as 10 years old. The family had moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina in this census. Martha married James Gillham around 1880. I do not have the 1890 census from this family. The 1900 Census list James Gillham married to Martha Stroup. Hester Mae Stroup Storay 30 years old, as the stepdaughter of James Gillham. Also listed are the children of Hester Mae Storay . The only child of Martha Stroup and the stepdaughter of James Gillham. (a) Hester Mae Stroup born May 18, 1870 in Buncombe Co. NC. She died, December 07, 1956. Married Manning Andrew Story about 1892. Manning Andrew Story abandons his family and went to Tenn. And started another family. The children of Hester Mae Stroup and Manning A. Story. (a.1) Joseph Edward Storay (a.2) Lucy Ann Stroray (a.3) William Hugh Storay, (the grandfather of Jackie Storay Shaw) (a.4) Gertrude Hellen Storay (a.5) Dolly Mabell Storay 10. Thomas Wade “Earl” Stroup was born September 25,1853 in Greenville S.C., and died November 12, 1918. He married Lucinda Curry December 19,1872 in Sandy Flats Post Office, Greenville Co, SC. She was born June 23, 1855 in Greenville SC and died February 24, 1948 in Greenville SC. Children of Thomas Earl Stroup and Lucinda Curry (a) John B. Stroup (b) Oscar Ellison Stroup (c) L.C. Stroup (d) Wisley Earl Stroup (e) Sallie A.E. Stroup (f) J.H. Stroup (g) Lucy Ellen Stroup, this is where Rick Turner connects to the family. (h) A. M. Stroup (i) Lilla Jane Stroup (j) William Ellison Stroup 11. Mary Stroup was born in 1856. Mary is in the 1860 census as 4 years old. Also, Mary is in the 1870 census as 14 years old. Appears in the 1880 census as 22years old. The family is living in Spartainburg, South Carolina. Lucy Ann Stroup is still alive and listed as 62 years old in this census. Also noted in the 1880 census is a child named Etta, 1 year old. She maybe the daughter of Mary. 12. I hope by posting this family information someone may connect to this family.

    1. MARRIAGE OF MICHAEL STROUP & POLLY WALKER by BARBARA PAINTER
    2. Joanne Scobee Morgan
    3. I'm NOT Barbara Painter, the writer of this article... I'm not related to any of the people in this, just transcribed it, for those who might be related. In the late fall of 1801 MICHAEL STROUP came to New Market, Highland Co., Ohio after a long and tedious trip from Maryland. There was something both comic and heroic in the picture he presented. On his head he carried an eighteen gallon copper kettle, on his back, a pack of tools, and in his hand, a quantity of wool. He was a manufacturer of hats and in this capacity became famous in, after years throughout the pioneer settlements of central Ohio. In March, 1803, our friend, Michael Stroup and POLLY WALKER were united in marriage. The history of this wedding, as given in Scott's history, is amusing, also valuable as a picture of the character and moral tone of social life of the time. "Miss Walker was a very handsome, black-eyed girl of eighteen, who had emigrated from Fleming County, Kentucky, with her mother and step-father in 1801. She wore on this occasion a nice plain cap on her head, white silk gloves, a plain light-figured calico, which cost one dollar per yard. Most of those who could get it preferred white muslin worth two dollars a yard; often however, they wore homespun, as meeting all requirements. The groom was dressed in brown dress coat, and pants, white marseilles vest, white socks and low quartered shoes and white kid gloves. The wedding took place at 2 p.m. The party was small and the ceremony performed by Squire Oliver Ross. "Well, said the squire, in his peculiar Irish style, we have et today to join together in holy matrimony Michael Stroup and Polly Walker, as respectable a couple as iver the Lord brought together. Now I hope that not one of you will have any objections to their gettin' married. Join your hands. wall, Mr. Mike, will you take Miss Polly as good looking and virtous a young lady as iver the Virgin Mary was, to be yer lawfully wedded wife? Do you promise to forsake all others (now by the Lord, Mike, you must quit your running after other girls and cling to her alone, will ye Mike?) "Yes, yes", said the groom. "Oh, by God, yes." Miss polly, will you take Mike, whom you hold by his right hand, to be your wedded husband, he is worthy, for he is as sprightly a young man as iver wore a pair of buckskin brokins you promise to forsake all others-but what the devil's to make a woman promise that, when you know they won't keep their promise, but I think you are an exception-will you cling to him till it pleases the Lord to separate you by death, will you, Polly? I know you will." "Yes". Now go home and raise your children for the Lord. The Lord bless you". Long and lovingly this couple lived in the enjoyment of their share of temporal blessing, seeing their fourteen children grow up like olive branches around their table. This couple were my 5th gr grandparents and this story is taken from the State Centennial History of Highland County Ohio", volume 2, by Klise. Barbara Painter

    1. Philip Stroup of Tippah Co., MS
    2. Reiley Kidd
    3. Today I received the compiled service record for this individual. Here are the highlights: A Philip Stroup enlisted in Co. F, 33rd MS Infantry on April 12, 1862 in Corinth, MS under Col. Hardcastle, for a period of 12 months. Soon after enlistment he became ill, and was sent to the general hospital, absent from his unit in May and June.By Sept. he was back with his unit, only to become ill again. He received a medical discharge on Nov. 25, 1862. This company subsequently joined Co. F, 3rd Battalion MS infantry (see below). The 3rd Battalion MS Infantry had been formed about Nov. 1861 of seven unattached companies and , by the addition of Capt. Charlton's Independent Co., MS Infantry and two companies formed of that part of the 27th Alabama Infantry which was not captured at Ft. Donelson. The Battalion was increased to regiment strength in April of 1862 and called the 33rd MS Infantry. This designation was changed to the 45th MS in November 1862. Later that same month, the men from the 27th Alabama were transferred back to that Regiment. Then in April of 1864, the 45th MS changed back to its original designation - the 3rd Battalion. This Philip Stroup was born about 1817 in NC, making him about 45 at the time of his enlistment. He is said to have moved to Texas with some of his young children after the War. Reiley Kidd Seattle

    1. Civil war record of Eli Stroup of Bartow Co., GA
    2. Reiley Kidd
    3. I had a pleasant surprise today! After more than two months of waiting for the National Archives to respond, I got one of my three queries back in today's mail, this one on Eli Stroup of Georgia. There's very little info, only one entry. But here's what it says: Stroup, Eli Capt. Stock's Co. (Etowah Guards), 17th Batt'n, Georgia Inf. (State Guards) (Confederate) private/private card # 45680038 "Eli Stroup appears on a Muster Roll of Capt. John Stocks' Unattached Company, for local defence, to serve in the defence of the Iron Works of the Etowah Manufacturing and Mining Co., Bartow Co., Georgia, from July 15, 1863 to (blank - not dated). Joined for duty and enrolled July 15, 1863, Etowah, GA, by D. Jenkins, J.P., for 6 months. not been paid. Present." That's it. No further information. Apparently just that one chit was the whole record of his war service. Eli Stroup was b. abt. 1801 in NC. The name of his first wife is unknown, and she died after two children, Ephraim Stroup (b. 1821) and Mary/Polly Stroup (b. abt 1823) were born. Eli married next Elizabeth Shetley in Lincoln Co. NC in 1830. In 1840, Eli, his second wife and two small children appear on the federal census of Lincoln Co. (84 LCN). I only know the name of one of these children, Alexander, b. abt 1835. In 1850, Eli is in Cass Co. GA, in the area which in 1861 became Bartow Co., GA, in the Etowah community, where cousin Moses Stroup ran an iron mill, as a laborer. I lose track of him after the 1860 federal census and this war record, and would love to hear from anyone who knows more of him. Reiley Kidd Seattle

    3. At least weekly, the Cemetery discussion list sponsored by rootsweb receives pleas to help save an endangered cemetery somewhere in this country. In the spring and again early this summer we had a discussion on the [email protected] about needing federal protection for our pioneer cemeteries. With the willingness and expertise of Bill Spurlock that discussion has made a giant leap into becoming a reality. If this project is to be successful we will need the help of those interested in genealogy to get the word out to appropriate places. Hard Copy printable petition can be found at: http://www.savinggraves.com/petition/index.htm Check back at this site later-a postal address will be available to which the completed petitons should be mailed. An on-line petition is available at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/sg0001/petition.html While the petition is set to go active on July 4th and run until October 1st, it is working now and it is already being signed. If anyone wants to read more, please go to : http://www.savinggraves.com Look for the The National Cemetery Protection Act Petition Drive on the front page. These URLs can be linked to any respectable web page without further permission. Much of our history and genealogy is lost every time a pioneer cemetery is lost. JADyer

    3. Hello, I am a long-time Stroup researcher, but a new member to this list. I'd like to get in touch with others working on Eli Stroup (b. abt. 1801 NC - d. aft. 1850, ?), son of Philip Stroup, Sr. of Lincoln Co., NC. I descend from Eli's son Ephraim, who took his family from Lincoln/Gaston Co., NC to Tippah Co. MS in 1850. I lose track of Eli after 1850, at which time he's in GA, apparently working for his relative, Moses Stroup, at an iron works. I'm happy to share freely what I have with others. I want to learn the name of Eli's first wife (and mother of Ephraim), who died before 1830, when Eli married second Elizabeth Shetley. Reiley Kidd Seattle

Anyway, I am looking for any info regarding Frederick Whistler Stroup who was born in Union County, PA in 1844. Served in the Civil War from 1861-1865. Enlisted at Elkhart, Indiana.
