Hello Martha, Thanks for the reply concerning William Augustus Strong. If you have any suggestions, I will greatly appreciate it and will follow up. I did some of the editing for the material in Vol V of the Strong update. The bulk of the work was done by my cousin, Alice May Smith and of course Bob Strong, who did a great job of editing the whole volume. Through a misunderstanding as to the release date, I did not get some final inputs in to the volume. Known facts about my William Augustus Strong. 1. He died at Black Rock, NY (near Buffalo) in the service of the Army. His military records indicate that he was born in Durham, CT. This was also confirmed by a letter by his grandson. He died in November 1814 at the age of 31 putting his birth ca 1783. 2. Per Fowler's "History of Durham, CT" he was sworn as a freeman in 1803. A Russell Strong was also in this list. 3. He married Abigail Crane ca 1802 in Durham, CT. She is from a large family who are well documented in a Crane genealogy by E. B. Crane. She had been an orphan, and had been provided a guardian, John Camp. (Her mother was a Camp.) 4. Abigail inherited property. Between William and Abigail, they accumulated several pieces of property in Durham, CT. They sold off this property over a short period of time and moved to Atwater, OH ca 1806. According to papers by his grandson, he built the first frame house in Atwater, OH a couple of years after the first road was cut through from Canfield, OH. A daughter, Maria was an early burial in an old cemetery in Atwater. 5. Abigail left Atwater and returned to Durham, CT ca 1810 leaving William and sons Alonzo and Luzerne in Atwater. William traveled to Durham, CT to persuade Abigail to return, but failed. He then married Julia Huton ca 1812. Ira b. 1813 was their son. 6. William probably entered the service just after the British raided Sundusky and parts of Western Ohio. He then enlisted for the duration in the Spring of 1814 and died in Black Rock, NY November 1814. 7. Alonzo and Luzerne returned to CT for a few years and then Alonzo was indentured to Joseph Hartzell at North Benton, OH. We have not found out who kept Alonzo in Durham. 8. Abigail was buried in lot 870 in the Old Durham Cemetery. The tombstone inscription: Mrs. Abigail, wife of William A. strong, who d. 9/29/1814 in her 31th yr. At her feet lies their infant daughter. [The infant daughter is a mystery. It is possible that the daughter was born before the move to OH, and they later shared a common grave.] 9. So........ if anyone has ideas for finding parents for William Augustus, I will be extremely grateful. My cousin Alice May Goodridge has worked many years without turning up a solid lead. I have spent several years also. Thanks for the interest in my problem. Ralph Strong.
