Mary Strong, of Hanover and Goochland Counties, Virginia, was probably his widow. Mary resided with her son, John Strong, III, until at least 1787, the date of her last record in Goochland County. Shortly thereafer, John Strong, III, and his wife, Elizabeth, relocated to Campbell Co., VA; they later joined William Strong, below, in Georgia. Children of John Strong, Jr., were: Martin, John III, Sherwood I, William, probably Nathan(iel), probably Martha m. Williams, possibly Sarah m. Blaylock / Blalock, probably Elizabeth. A "Matt" was also mentioned in records but it is not certain whether he was a son; the omission of a last name suggests he may have been a slave. >GENERATION 03: William STRONG, Sr., born probably around 1730, probably St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA, married before 1759, Frances Johnson. Resided Hanover County; relocated to Goochland County, VA, about 1759; relocated to Buckingham about 1776; relocated to Georgia about 1794 or 1795 where he resided in the territory that became Clarke County, GA. Died testate in Clarke Co., GA, before 6 MAY 1816. Frances Johnson Strong died testate in Clarke County, GA, before 7 JAN 1828. William Strong had a brother, Sherwood Strong, 1st, who was a soldier in the French and Indian Wars (fought on and off between 1754-1763), who died before 1779 in VA. >GENERATION 04: Sherwood STRONG, 2nd, was probably born in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA, prior to 1759, as his birth and/or christeneing was not recorded in the Register of the St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, VA. He was not of tithable age when his father was taxed in Goochland County in 1775, proving he was born subsequent to 1753. Sherwood Strong, 2nd, was a tithable in his father's household in Buckingham County, VA, from 1782 (earliest available) throught 1794. He apparently relocated to Georgia with his father and brother, Johnson Storng, in 1794 or 1795. Some of his descendants became members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) but I suspect that he was confused by them with Sherwood Strong, 1st, or that the memberships were based on public service rather than military service. No military records have been documented. The DAR applications of his descendants may contain valuable information, such as the identity of his wife, however. Descendants also confused him with my ancestor, Sherwood Strong, 3rd, son of Martin, 1st, and Ann (Stanley) Strong; this Sherwood married Mary Tibbs of Goochland Co., VA. Sherwood Strong, 2nd, apparently married in Georgia after 1794 to Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. But on Sherwood's 1820 census, two apparent sons reportedly born 1794 or earlier were enumerated, suggesting the possiblility he married in Buckingham County, VA, but continued to live on his father's property. Sherwood Strong died in Clarke County, GA, by SEP 1825, when his estate was being settled. Elizabeth Strong and her orphans received land grants in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. They relocated to Walton Co., GA, then to Coweta County, GA, where her will was proved 8 MAY 1845. >GENERATION 05: John Strong was born 24 FEB 1806 in Clarke Co., GA. He married Mary Ann Whatley of Newton Co., GA, on 9 JUL 1829. They settled in Rusk Co., Texas, after 1846 (birth of Samuel in GA) and prior to 1 JUN 1850, when the census was taken. The Strong Cemetery in Rusk Co., Texas, was apparently begun on his property as the John Strong family cemetery. John Strong was buried there after his death on 5 SEP 1854. >GENERATION 06: William Edward Strong was listed as Edward, age 9 years, on the 1850 census of his parents. He was thus born about 1841 in Georgia. Another account gives a birth date of 9 APR 1843 in Paulding Co., GA. A John Strong family appeared on the 1840 census of Paulding County, GA. Edward Strong's wife was Elmira Frances Bateman. On the 1870 census of Rusk County, TX, he was listed as William Strong with wife, Elmira, and two children. Edward Strong and family were enumerated on the 1880 census of Rusk County, Texas, Microfilm Page 111D, Dwelling 441, with five children, including Oscar Strong, age 5 years. Edward's mother, Mary, age 68, was also residing with him. >GENERATION 07: 7. Oscar Strong was born 14 NOV 1874 in Rusk County, Texas. In 1965 Social Security Number 457-88-4129 was issued in Texas. He died 15 AUG 1972, when he was residing in ZIP Code 75671 in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas. Write to the Social Security Administration to obtain a copy of his Social Security file. >BIBLIOGRAPHY: For more detail about this family consult the article "Sherwood Strong of Hanover County, Virginia, and Clarke County, Georgia" in the book Strong Family Histories, Volume V, published by the Strong Family Association of America (SFAA) in 1996.
