    1. Strong Heads of Households, NC: Part I: 1790
    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. =============================================================== The following data were abstracted from the Index to Heads of Households, First Federal Census of the U. S., 1790, as published on Compact Disks by Banner Blue Division, Broderbund Software (the publishers of Family Tree Maker genealogy database software). The categories on this census were: Free White Males age 16 years or more Free White Males age less than 16 years [that is, 0 through 15 years] Free White Females [of any age] Other Free Persons (e.g., American Indians) [of any age] Slaves [of any age] The last two caterories are omitted below, since there were none in any of the Strong households listed below or in Gov. Alexander's Martin's household. The following tabulations should be independently verified by reading the census from microfilm. NAME OF HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD NC COUNTY PAGE CENSUS David Strong New Hanover 193 01-01-06 John Strong Richmond 045 01-01-02 John Strong Rockingham 168 03-00-03 Lewis Strong Anson 036 01-01-01 Peter Strong Cumberland 041 02-01-00 Sneed Strong Rockingham 169 01-00-04 James Strange Rockingham 168 01-02-05 Gov. Alexander Martin Rockingham 169 03-01-02 COMMENTS: Neither Mary Strong nor Elizabeth Strong were indexed. Other published indices should be checked for Mary Strong and/or the census should be read from micorfilm in search of her record. The following enumeration of the Mary Strong household has been purported, with no citation for the census page. Mary Strong Rockingham ??? 01-04-06 This enumeration suggests one son born 1774 or earlier, four sons born 1775-1790, and five daughters of unknown ages. It has also been alleged that Elizabeth Strong and sons were residing with Gov. Alexander Martin at his Danbury Plantation in Rockingham Co. in 1790. If that is true, then she appears to have had three sons, one of whom is not positively identified, but reported by some historians of this family to have been a James Strong. This census would indicate one son (John Strong?) was born before 1774 (when Thomas Strong of Pittsylvania County, VA, was still alive). At that time, Alexander Martin was apparently residing in Rowan County, NC, per a message posted by Francie Lane, a descendant and researcher of the Alexander Strong, aka, Alexander Strong Martin. Could Elizabeth Strong have been from Rowan County or vicinity and could she have relocated to Guilford / Rockingham Co., NC, with Alexander Martin? To my knowledge, no one has searched the records of Rowan County circa 1770 or earlier for Strongs. On several instances I have pointed out that there appeared to be more Strongs in Rockingham County than could be ascribed as children, and/or spouses of children, of William Strong, Sr., whose last known record was in 1770 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. The 1790 census highlights the fact there were other Strong families residing in North Carolina with no known connection to William Strong, Sr. A message I received this date suggests there were Strongs residing in Chowan County, or vicinity, prior to 1700, for example. Could some of these other, unrelated Strong families have moved into Guilford / Rockingham County, also? The John Strong residing in Richmond County in 1790 is familiar to The Strong Mail List as "Captain" John Strong, later of Copiah County, Mississippi. Peter Strong of Cumberland County, NC, I believe, was a descendant of "Elder" John Strong of Massachusetts. I do not recognize David Strong of New Hanover County or Lewis Strong of Anson County. A person named David T. Strong appears in early records of East Tennessee but I have not been able to trace either his ancestry or his descendants. To be continued in Part II: 1800 Census. "BoB T."
