Strong is probably a descendant of Mastin Strong, who died in Randolph Co., AL, in 1866. Following is the ancestry of Mastin Strong and the probable ancestry of Samuel D. Strong. 1. John Strong of St. Peter's Parish, probably New Kent Co., VA, was probably the headright claimed by Robert Hughes of New Kent Co., VA, in a 1682 grant. No records of John Strong have been found after the 1703 christening (infant baptism) of his son, George Strong. His wife has not been identified. They likely died in St. Paul's Parish, New Kent or Hanover County, VA. 2. John Strong, Jr., born 1698, St. Peter's Parish, VA; died St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA, by 1751. His widow was probably the Mary Strong whose last record was in 1787 in Goochland Co., VA, when she appeared to be residing with he son, John Strong, III. 3. Martin Strong, born about 1725-1730, probably St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA, was the most probable husband of Ann Stanley, daughter of John Stanley, "the eldest", of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. Ann married a Mr. Strong, a non-Quaker, about 1753 or 1754, and was excommunicated from the Cedar Creek Friends Meeting for doing so. Martin appears to have died in Hanover County about 1780, as in 1781 Ann Strong was residing in Goochland Co., VA, near several Strong in-laws, and was the apparent head of her household. Her last record was in 1803, but she possibly relocated to Buckingham Co., VA, and was the elderly woman residing with her son, John Strong, there in 1810. About 1797, Ann Strong with her son, Mastin Strong, entered into a seven year "share-cropper" lease in Goochland Co., VA. 4. Mastin Strong was born about 1774 when his parents were then apparently residents of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. After 1781 he resided in Goochland Co., VA, with his mother and siblings. He married in 1799 to Nancy East in Goochland Co., VA, but she apparently died soon after. About 1805 or 1806 he married, second, Rebecca, whose surname was apparently McCormack, of Buckingham Co., VA. They relocated to Roane Co., TN, where they were residing at the time of the War of 1812, in which Mastin served. Many years later Mastin Strong applied for and received military land bounty grants and after Mastin's death, Rebecca filed for a Widow's Pension based on Mastin's service. These records provide valuable information about the Mastin Strong family. Mastin resided in Roane Co., Jefferson Co., and Bradley Counties, TN, where he was in 1850. One of his sons, Samuel C. Strong, settled in Randolph County, AL, and Mastin took his military land grants there, also. Mastin relocated to the part of Randolph County, AL, that is now Cleburne County. The coordinates of Mastin's land show he was residing just north of the current line between Randolph and Cleburne Counties. Mastin died on 31 JAN 1866 and in 1870 his widow, Rebecca, was found in the home of an apparent daughter, Mrs. S. F. Horn, in Calhoun Co., AL, but Rebecca still listed her mailing address as Randolph County in her pension application. At the time of the 1830 census, Mastin and Rebecca Strong had 10 persons under the age of 30 in their household. Most of Mastin's and Rebecca's children have not been identified. 5. Samuel C. Strong was probably born about 1810 in Roane Co., TN. He said he had three sisters who were older than he (who have not been identified). His census reports in Randolph Co., AL, indicated eleven children, two of whom were reported to have relocated to Erath County, Texas, in the 1890s. The wife of Samuel C. Strong was Sarah Morrison. 6. Thomas Jeffeson Strong and George Washington Strong reportedly relocated to Erath Co., TX, in the 1890s, so one of them is the likely father of Samuel David Strong. George W. Strong, born about NOV 1857 was enumerated on the 1880 census in Tallapoosa Co., AL, and the 1900 census of Shelby Co., AL, thus he could not have been in Erath Co., TX, in 1900, as alleged. No one named Samuel David Strong or S. D. Strong was found on the 1870 census of Randolph Co. or Cleburne Co., AL. A review of Strongs found on the 1880 soundex residing in Cleburne, Tallapoosa, and Shelby Counties, Alabama, did not locate a Samuel Strong or male named S. D. Strong. All Strong households in Alabama in 1880 were not checked. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records of Strongs residing in Erath County, Texas, should be abstracted in a search for the parents and grandparents of Samuel David Strong. A person named "Sam David Strong" died in Falls Co., TX, on 1 MAR 1943, according to Texas Death Certificate # 12028. The death certificate should state the parents of the deceased. I recommend that a copy of this death certificate be obtained from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Texas Department of Health, 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, Texas 78756.
