Floyd, The military service index record of the War of 1812 only lists the military individual and no family information, while the pension index may list a spouse and other interesting details. I did not find Thomas in the pension index (pension application file). There are 3 potential military record types for military records and they may or may not be available for an individual: 1) Military service records, 2) pension application files , 3) bounty land application records. I only found Thomas in Virginia and not North Carolina. However, if there was incorrect spelling or alphabetical filing, then I did not catch it - in other words if they mispelled his last name or Thomas was not after Samuel in the index (the index was alphabetical in Surname and also in first name). The National Archives Order for copies of Veteran's records form tells you all you need to fill out. It has instructions. When I have used it, I have filled out as much detail as possible. I included wife, date of birth, death, location he lived, anything I could squeeze into the form. Now, looking back, if I were you, I might even include any other detail on a separate piece of paper as long as the person looking doesn't have to read too much - mostly bulleted items that will help them locate Thomas. You will not have to pay for the information ($10) unless the individual is found. The best record to find would be, of course the pension, because this lists wife and other geneological details. In your case, I think you have to start with the one you know exists. It is possible that when I looked, it could have been mispelled and located in another area of the records. What you need to do is to get a hold of is the National Archives Order for copies of Veteran's records form. It will take several months to get a reply back. Kay >Kay, > Are you saying that you found two Thomas STRONGs from Virginia in the >Index of the War of 1812, but it did not show any dates or wives?
