My Thomas Strong, Sr. was said to have fought in the War of 1812 and I think I estimated his birth date to have been about 1790. He was taxed on many slaves but no poll tax, suggesting he was not a resident of Sumner County. My recollection is that he was engaged in the timber business: logging and/or saw milling. Was your Thomas Strong, Sr., so engaged after he relocated to the Mid-West? If your Thomas Strong, Sr., served in the War of 1812, his military records could provide considerable data. Bounty Land Grants to War of 1812 veterans were authorized about 1850. Widow's Pensions were authorized before 1870. The land grant and widow's pensions files can be very uselful to a family historian. Do you have any idea WHERE your Thomas Strong, Sr., was when he served in the War of 1812? Resided Bedford County.] John Strong, Capt. William McKay's Company, 1st (Pimkin's) Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. Muster rolls only. Places mentioned are Murfreesboro (Rutherford County), Mobile, AL, Fort Williams, Camp Alexander. He enlisted 20 JUN 1814, apparently at Fayettville. John Strong [#2], 1st (Pimkin's) Regiment, West Tennessee Militia John Strong, Capt. William Hodge's Company, 3rd (Copeland's) Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. Enlisted 28 JAN 1814. "Each non-commissioned officer, musician and private travelled 240 miles marching to and from Fayetteville, where mustered in and discharged, and returning to residence in Smith County, Tennessee." Mastin Strong, 3rd (Johnson's) Regiment, East Tennessee Militia [Son of Mrs. Ann Strong of Goochland Co., VA. I have his land bounty records and his widow's pension file. Land grants were in Randolph, now Cleburne, County, Alabama. Widow was Rebecca, whose maiden name was not clearly legible but appeared to be recorded as "McComic". He was commissioned as a Lieutenant. As yet I have no proof about where in Tennessee he resided, but I suspect he was with his brother in Bedford Co., Tennessee.] Stephen Strong, Metcalf's Regiment, West Tennessee Militia [Descended from "Elder" John Strong. Died later in Mississippi, after he had apparently stopped temporarily in northern Alabama.] Thomas Strong, Capt. James Tabb's Company, 2nd (Lowry's) Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. Computed distance 230 miles." Enlisted 14 SEP 1814. Thomas Strong, Capt. McCall's Company, 1st (Wynne's and/or Martin's) Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers. His bounty land application, file #7277, stated that in 1853 he was a resident of Davidson County, TN, and that he was 57 years of age, or born about 1796. He enlisted in SEP 1813 in Sumner County, Tennessee. This was Thomas Strong, son of Sherwood Strong. William Strong, 2nd (Cocke's) Regiment, West Tennessee Militia William Strong, 2nd (Higgin's) Regiment, Mounted, Tennessee Volunteers REJECTED PENSION CLAIMS: Thomas Strong, Monroe Campbell's Company, Wood's Brigade, Tennessee Militia. Survivor's Original Pension File SO #25612. He stated he enlisted at Athens, McMinn Co., TN. On 27 NOV 1871 he reported his age was 87 years, or born about 1784. He stated he married Martha L. Buckanon on 25 NOV 1853 at Kingston, Roane Co., TN. [He could possibly be related to the Strongs of Knox County, Tennessee. Mastin Strong did not relocate to Bradley County, adjacent McMinn Co., until much later, probably in the 1840s. Mastin Strong married first in 1799, so he would have no children born before 1800.] In 1871 this Thomas Strong was residing in Lauderdale Co., TN. On the 1870 census of Lauderdale County, Tennessee, he said he was 80 (86?) years old, or born about 1790 (or 1784?) in Tennessee. In 1870 he had five daughters and one son, Jacob, born between 1855 and 1868.
