My name is Susan Strong Hall... and I have been most generously invited to join the Strong Mail List. I must say I am very impressed with all of the work the many of you have done before me. You have made this journey through the past much more easy for someone beginning their quest such as myself. I already have left some bits of information on many of the sites you have. As I have progressed swiftly over the short time I've been doing this I will try to recap the most current information here today. Many of you may already have some this as I sent some of this to David B. "Dave" Strong last night in an email response. I am adding as many dates and information as I possibly can... I have discovered during my search that many people of the past when talking about their current time have failed to mention current data assuming everyone knew it. This makes it more difficult for the future people searching... so I will include it, if it bores you, sorry, just skip it. ME: Susan Strong Hall, born August 19, 1955, in Jackson, Mississippi. Daughter of Joseph Robert Strong and Mary Sue Haynes Strong. I have three brothers: Joseph Alan Strong, born Nov. 15, 1953, James Anthony (Tony) born May 1, 1957, and Steven Robert born Sept. 13, 1959. (All of us were born in Jackson, MS). I am married to Byron Gregory Hall (Greg) and have two daughters: Anastasia Elizabeth Odile Hall born Jan. 26, 1985 and Kimberly Evelyn Nicole Hall born Dec. 18, 1988. MY FATHER: Joseph Robert Strong born in Gulfport, Mississippi on July 25, 1929. Son of Robert Emory Strong and Odile Marie Louise Agnus (Ashford) Strong. My father has five siblings: Charles, Blanche, Sally, Judy and Robert (Robin). I'm not sure of middle intitials or birthdates- all siblings and my father are still living. As I accquire this info I will add it. HIS FATHER: (My grandfather) Robert Emory Strong was born Feb. 1, 1900 in Bloomington, Indiana and died in Aug., 1981 in Jackson, MS. He was the only child of Charles Gamble Strong and Edna Perring Strong. Because of his mothers death at an early age he was raised by my Great great grandfather. MY GREAT GRANDFATHER: Charles Gamble Strong born in 1876 or 1877 in Bloomington, Indiana. died in Aug. 1962 in Jackson, MS Verterns Hospital. married Edna Perring daughter of Charles Kempis Perring and Edna Mayfield Perring. (no dates available.) Charles Gamble had two brothers: Lee and Dave (or Dove or Doug- writing hard to read). Charles Gamble had one son: Robert Emory Strong. Charles Gamble served in the Spanish America War, info as follows: (My father has orginal papers- i have faxed copies if anyone wants one) Mexican War, Private, 3rd Regiment, Company A, Monroe County. Mustered in 22 Jun 1846 at New Albany, Indiana, by Colonel Samuel Churchill, mustered out 25 Jun 1847, at New Orleans, Louisiana, by Colonel Samuel Churchill. Source is Indiana in the Mexican War, Oran Perry, 1908. MY GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER: Capt. Robert Richard Strong born in 1842 died 1924. (No locations available) married to Sarah Lutitia (Voss) Strong daughter of Emory Voss. (no other info available). Last known address was: 209 East 1st. Bloomington, Indiana. (Aunt has photo taken in 1910). My father says that my grandfather (Robert Emory Strong) was raised by my Great Great Grandfather (Capt. Robert Richard Strong) because his mother died at an early age (Edna Perring Strong). And he claims that Capt. Robert Richard Strong fought in the Civil War (had relics and talked about it all the time... photo on 209 East 1st. Street has some cannon balls stacked as lawn ornament) I have searched all of the Civil War sites for Indiana and came up with nothing on a Robert Richard Strong. This information seems to be divided strictly by the state in which they joined the army. Most sites say that you really need to know the state and the Regimen. I guess that he could have joined in another state. My father has told me that his father didn't talk much about the family history, but he does remember that the "rumor" was that our ancestors came from England as indentured servants to North Carolina. After serving their indentureship, the family moved to Indiana. If you have any records of Strongs from England traveling to the one of the Carolinas as indentured servants, I would greatly appreciate that information. I have also found a Robert Strong who was in the Revolutionary War of 1812, but have proof of a connection to Capt. Robert Richard Strong. END of known trail. My father found a letter written to my great Grandfather that may contain some Strong info that may not yet be out there. I'm putting a copy of the letter here it's very interesting... my great grandfather was also searching for his roots! THE LETTER: Dated January 4, 1928 from US House Representative (of Kansas) James G. Strong sent to my great grand father (Charles Gamble Strong). The first line of the letter was unreadable but the appearant "jest" is that a woman in Indiana sent him (US Rep) a letter with information concerning the quest for her (or their) ancestors. The rest of the letter is as follows: "... sent me your letter of April 29, 1927 and as she has just asked its return I thought I would write to express my interest and ask if you had heard from Miss Julia Weir of San Diego, California and had located the manuscript concerning the Strong Family prepared by Dr. Strong Weir. I have no record of the Strong line in my family further back than William Strong who was drowned while crossing the Ohio river six miles above Point Pleasant on Sunday, June 5 1824, age 41 years and 5 months and who was born on the Eastern shore of Maryland January 8, 1783 and was a manufacturer of silk hats. His son, my grandfather was Samuel S. Strong born November 3, 1806 in Belmont County, Ohio, six miles from Wheeling. He died at Morris, Illinios on the 1st day of January, 1893. My father was James George Strong born in Lebanon, Indiana. I understand that a cousin of mine in Chicago is studying the genealogy of the Strong family and that she claims they were Huguenots, but I had always thought they came from English descent. I would appreciate it if you would advise me if you have heard from Miss Julia Weir as I would like to try and determine from what branch of the Strong line descended. Wishing you every health and happiness during the New Year, I am. Sincerely, Cousin Jim" (His signature) END of letter (I have a faxed copy of this letter- my father has original) The Q U E S T goes ON! Who knows if this could be a connection to me or another Strong out there searching! You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time! Thanks for inviting me to join "Your Strong Family"!
