He was a neighbor of my Solomon BRIDGES. I've hit the old brick wall with the Bridges, so I'm hoping that by learning something about his neighbors, I might find some clue! Any information on Samuel would be wonderful. Thanks! Jeanne Arguelles [email protected] ============================================================ Good Morning, Jeanne! Welcome to the Strong Mail List. Unfortunately, there has been little discussion of this Samuel Strong on the Strong Mail List in the past three years. I cannot recall any past or present subscribers who are descendants of Samuel Strong. There were two other Strong families in Oglethorpe County. John Strong (3rd) was a son of John Strong [Jr.?] of St. Martin's Parish, western Hanover Co., VA, and was probably a grandson of John Strong, Sr., of St. Peter's Parish, probably New Kent County, VA. He appears to have been residing in adjacent Clarke Co., GA, when he died. William Strong of Oglethorpe and Troop Counties, GA, has been purported to have been a son of John Strong of Rockingham Co., NC, and grandson of William Strong, Sr., of Hanover and Pittsylvania Counties, VA, and great-grandson of John Strong, Sr., of St. Peter's Parish, VA. James Robert ("Jim") Rolff included discussions of each of these residents of Oglethorpe County, GA, in his book, THE STRONG FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND THE SOUTH, (c) 1983, the author. Jim is a subscriber to the Strong Mail List. His E-Mail address is <[email protected]>. A check of the index to the book shows no references to Solomon Bridges. A Mr. Bridges is mentioned in a legal record of William Strong, Jr., Esquire, of Clarke County, GA, however. This William Strong, Jr., was a son of William Strong, Sr., of VA and GA, who was a brother of John Strong of Oglethorpe County, GA. Apparently no information about Samuel Strong and his descendants was submitted for inclusion in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, VOLUME V, (c) 1996, The Strong Family Association of America. The implication is that there are few active researchers of this family. Please share any information YOU know about Samuel Strong and his descendants with the Strong Mail List. I have a few bits and pieces of information in my paper files but most of these were contributed to the "Strongs of the South" Newletter edited by Jim Rolff in the early 1980s and were incorporated into his book. I recommend you do a search for your Bridges using the Internet Family Finder. http://www.familytreemaker/ifftop.html Nothing can substitute, however, for searching the court records of Oglethorpe County for the time period of your interest. You should be able to rent these records on indefinite loan from the nearest LDS Family History Center. You will probably find a few references to your ancestor in the Indices of these volumes, but usually only principles are indexed. You really need to scan each page, paying attention to the names of witnesses as well as the name of principles. It is slow process but can yield big dividends. Of course, if you check the indices of published books about Oglethorpe County history and genealogy, you may find some references to your ancestors. Best wishes in your family history, "BoB T."
