    1. William Strongs of VA, NC, and/or GA, pre-1800
    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. =============================================================== On Wednesday, 9 SEP 1998, I wrote the following: =============================================================== The purpose of the following discussion is to caution you that But there were other William Strongs who migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia, about this time. My advice is to do further research on the William Strongs of Wilkes County, GA, before accepting the conclusion that it was William, son of John Strong of Rockingham County, NC, who married Susannah Hardeman. The conclusion is probably correct, but there is a degree of uncertainty. Particularly there was William Strong, Jr., son of William Strong, Sr. The elder William Strong's migrations took him from St. Martin's Parish, in western Hanover County, VA, to Goochland Co., VA, to Buckingham County, VA, to the part of Wilkes County, GA, that eventually became Clarke County. William Strong, Jr., was a Revolutionary War soldier and soon after the war he relocated to Georgia, where his records are found in Wilkes, Franklin, and Clarke Counties. William Strong, Jr., of Buckingham County, GA, last appeared on the personal property taxes of that county in 1785. He was apparently residing in Georgia by 1786. > CORRECTION: Should be Buckingham County, VA INDEX TO THE HEADRIGHT AND BOUNTY GRANTS OF GEORGIA, 1756- 1909, shows that two grants of 200 acres and 50 acres were made to a person or persons named William Strong in Wilkes County, GA, in 1786. (Book LLL, Pages 219 and 261) A grant of 575 acres to William Strong [Jr.] in Franklin County was made in 1790. [Book TTT, Page 772]. The land granted to William Strong was subsequently located in Elbert County, GA. 100 acres on the Fork Creek originally granted to William Strong was sold in 1790 by John and Ann Davis to Charles Kennedy, all of Wilkes County, GA. 50 acres located on Dove's (?) Creek originally granted to William Strong was sold in 1791 by Leonard and Sarah Rice to John Staples. The full transcript of these deeds might give more clues about this William Strong. See Elbert County Deed Book "A". Incidentally, Margaret ("Peggy") Stokes Strong, wife of William Strong, Jr., was the daughter of William and Sarah Stokes of Elbert County, GA. On 21 SEP 1789, William Strong OF WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, was deeded 545 acres on Rocky Creek by Benjamin and Sarah Ashworth of Wilkes County, GA. William Strong OF WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, was deeded 287 1/2 acres on the Big Shoals Creek of the Oconee River in Franklin County, GA, on 11 NOV 1790 by Jesse Webb of Greene County, NC. Ninty-five (95) acres on Big Shoal Creek was purchased by William Strong [Jr.] OF WILKES COUNTY, GA, on 21 OCT 1790 from Willliam Gardner of Wilkes County, GA. There was a deed dated 26 FEB 1796 from William Strong, Jr., OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA, to William Strong, Sr., OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA. The 380 acres conveyed was on the Big Shoal Creek. This last deed seems to prove it was William Strong, Jr., formerly of Buckingham County, VA, who was the grantee or purchaser of land on the Big Shoal Creek of the Oconee River in the part of Franklin County, GA, that became Clarke County, GA. The deed on Rocky Creek could possibly have been to another William Strong. "BoB T." Robert T. Strong, Jr. 119 Mystic Way Madison, AL 35757-8801 ================================================================= To be more accurate, the 26 FEB 1796 deed proved that the younger of two William Strongs then residing in Franklin County, GA, deeded land to the older of two Williams Strongs then residing in Franklin County, GA. It does not necessarily prove a father and son relationship. After posting the message yesterday, I considered this possibility: Could William Strong, son of William Strong of Buckingham Co., VA, , have conveyed land to William Strong, son of John Strong of Rockingham Co., NC, or vice versa? So when did William Strong, Sr., father of William Strong, Jr., depart Buckingham County, VA? The answer is provided by Personal Property tax lists abstracted by James R. (Jim) Rolff, I believe while he was researching at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City. He sent me a typed copy of the tax lists for the entire William Strong, Sr., family. The tax lists show both William Strong, Sr., and William Strong, Jr., in Buckingham County, VA, taxed for Calendar Year 1785, but only one William Strong in Buckingham County for tax years 1786 through 1794. No Strongs were found on the lists for tax years 1795-1797. Records of personal property taxes for 1798-1809 were not available. By 1810, only John Strong was assessed taxes in Buckingham County. This was apparently John Strong, son of my ancestor, Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong, formerly of Goochland County, VA, but who was possibly residing with John Strong in Buckingham County in 1810, per the census for that year showing an older woman in the household. The 1794 tax list for Buckingham County was somewhat confusing as it showed William Strong ("R.S."), Sherwood Strong, and Johnson Strong ("D.W."). If the "R.S." meant Revolutionary War Soldier, then this was the younger William Strong. I have no idea what "D.W." meant, but we know from the Revolutionary War survivors's pension application of Johnson Strong that he had performed public service by working for little or no pay in the Iron Works during part of the War, serving as soldier for part of the War. That the William Strong who remained in Buckingham County, VA, was the elder William is proved by the fact that he was assessed tax on (his son) John Strong in 1788, 1790, and 1791, and on his future son-in-law, S. [Samuel] Bridgewater, in 1793. [Samuel Bridgewater of Clarke Co., GA, had one draw in the 1805 land lottery, indicating he was not then married. He was killed in the War of 1812 and his widow, Jane Strong Bridgewater, subsequently remarried twice. She was the second wife of William M. Stokes, a Revolutionary War veteran; they married on 16 NOV 1815 in Clarke County, GA. Stokes died in 1828 in Coweta Co., GA. Jane married, third, Rev. Humphrey Posey, a missionary to the Cherekees. They lived at Newnan, Coweta Co., GA, where Posey died in DEC 1846. See COWETA COUNTY CHRONICLES FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS, (c) 1928, pages 90, 94. Was William M. Stokes the same person as William Muntford Stokes, the brother of Margaret ("Peggy") Stokes Strong, per the 1794 will of William Stokes of Elbert County, GA? ] The tax lists suggest that by 1795 all of the William Strong, Sr., family was in Georgia, including both William Strong, Sr., and William Strong, Jr. So it is quite likely that the deed in Franklin County, GA, in 1796 was from son to father. It this assessment is accurate, then it was William Strong, Jr., son of William Strong, Sr., who acquired land on the Big Shoal Creek of the Oconee River in 1790. In turn, this proves that William Strong, Jr., was a resident of Wilkes County, GA, as early as 1790 (and probably as early as 1786). Differentiating all the Strongs with the same given names in the same places at the same time surely does keep one from being bored!
