Hi, Carolyn: Your revised and expanded Ancestor Chart, posted on the Guest Register, Strong Quest web site, on Saturday, 26 SEP 98, has been received. Before I forward this to the Strong Mail List and archive it on the Strong Quest site, I would like to request clarification of your Third Generation, to follow. "Generation 03: Thomas Strong b 12/1739 at Hanover Co VA; m Elizabeth Lewis; d 1778/79 poss Rockingham Co NC" Would you please cite your documentation for the marriage of Thomas Strong and Elizabeth Lewis? To my knowledge there is no record that positively and indisputeably identifies the wife of Thomas Strong. His last two documented records were in Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1775. Records of a Mary Strong and family are found in the Matrimony Primitive Baptist Church, on the Matrimony Creek in Rockingham County, NC, beginning in 1776. A Mary Strong appears as the head of a household in Rockingham County, NC, at the time of the 1790 and 1800 census. Jim Rolff's assessment was that Mary Strong was the widow of Thomas Strong. The maiden name of this Mrs. Mary Strong is unknown. As I have pointed out on a number of instances, most recently only a day or two ago, there was also an Elizabeth Strong in Guilford / Rockingham Co., NC, who had two proven sons: John Strong and Alexander Martin Strong (aka Alexander Strong Martin). The father of this John Strong has not been identified. Could the father have been Thomas Strong? Elizabeth Strong's records begin in Guilford County, NC, in 1783 and continue past 1812 in Rockingham County. In 1807, Elizabeth Strong was named as a legatee in the will of her consort, Gov. Alexander Martin of NC. In 1812 she conveyed land to [her son?] John Strong, witnessed by her son, Alexander S. Martin. [There were other John Strongs in the county.] Was there another adult female named Elizabeth Strong in Rockingham County in 1812 and 1830? If not, then Elizabeth Strong was still living, as in 1812 she and Elizabeth Sneed were witnesses to the Last Will and Testament of "Rece" Price and in 1830 these two proved the will. Assuming that Elizabeth Strong was the widow of a Strong male, then she was widowed prior to the birth of Alexander Martin Strong, who was fathered by Gov. Alexander Martin. When was Alexander Martin Strong born? He was not reported to be a minor in the will of Gov. Alexander Martin, thus he was at least 21 years of age in 1807, or born 1784 or earlier. This is consistent with Elizabeth Strong's first known legal record, which was dated 1783, implying she was then widowed. The 1800 census of Elizabeth Strong showed she had a son age 10 to 15 years, thus born 1785 to 1790. A birth year around 1785 seems to be the best estimate for Alexander Strong Martin.. Could John Strong, son of Elizabeth, have been fathered by Thomas Strong? Assuming John Strong was a legal adult in FEB 1797 when Elizabeth Strong deeded him personal property, then John was born FEB 1776 or earlier and would have been conceived in 1775 or earlier. So, yes, he COULD POSSIBLY have been the son of Thomas Strong who is assumed to have died in 1775 or 1776. [The gift of household items and stock suggest that John Strong married and set up housekeeping in 1797.] With so many John Strongs in Rockingham County, it has been difficult to trace John Strong, son of Elizabeth Strong. His descendants have not been identified. Information about Alexander Strong Martin is in the archived messages to the Strong Mail List at Rootsweb. Doesn't anyone have any opinions about this theory, which is at variance with the commonly held view, which was based on the assessment of Jim Rolff and published in his book? Prove my thesis is incorrrect! Prove that Mary Strong was the widow of Thomas Strong. Or prove that Elizabeth Lewis was the wife of Thomas Strong. "BoB T." Strong Robert T.
