    1. SURNAMES in all caps, please
    2. Diana Matthiesen
    3. To everyone (not singling out anyone in particular), Please put SURNAMES in all caps. (And please do not put anything else in all caps.) I am on many mail-lists and cannot take the time to read every post line-by-line in the faint hope that it might contain something pertaining to my family's pedigree -- because the vast majority of messages do not pertain to my family pedigree. So all I do is scan new messages for SURNAMES, either filing or deleting each message as I go through them in my Inbox. But if the surnames in a message aren't capitalized, I *automatically delete the message*, without either reading or scanning it. I know that many list-members do the same and for the same reasons (precious little time to do research), so I am not asking just for myself. And it is to your own benefit, not just others, that you put SURNAMES in your messages in all caps -- because that way more people will actually read your messages. Please pull back and scan this message. See how the word "SURNAMES" stands out? That is the effect you want. And see how the word surnames does not stand out here and in second paragraph above where I did not put it in all caps. That is the effect you don't want. Thank you. Diana P.S. If you want a particular line in a pedigree to stand out over the others, it is customary to use an asterisk* to emphasize a name (i.e., please do not un-all-caps some names just to make others stand out). -- Every pedigree is a working hypothesis.
