I hope it helps Connie Corbett-Whittier.... at least this proves there were Elliotts in Donegal, and James Strong's wife Prudence Elliott could have originated in one of the families you have found. Just a note for newbies... the "Griffith's" which Patty is referring to below is Griffith's Valuations. These are real property assessment records prepared for each Irish County in the 1860's. They are of obvious value to genealogists... even to those researching emigrants who left BEFORE the 1860's because the townlands (an Irish land division) tended to remain in the hands of other family members, often of the same surname. Thus, if one finds an Elliott in "ALLA" townland, as below, then Alla townland was probably held by an Elliott circa 1809, etc. You then need to identify the Church of Ireland Parish in which the townland is located, and attempt to find any birth/death/marriage records... this is where it gets difficult, because many of the records were burned in the Four Courts Fire... BUT some records DO survive locally. Drumhome Parish in Donegal has local copies of the records going back into the 1790's or before. Also, the land holders in the various townlands were usually TENANT farmers. It is important to try to determine who the land lords were. SOMETIMES there are estate records held in the PRO in Dublin, or in Belfast, which may shed light on who the tenants were... emigration often occurred at the end of 31 year leases... so you can sometimes interpolate who the tenant was if you know when emigration occurred and can compare with the estate lease records.
