    3. Extracts from Robert E. Strong's message and Robert T. Strong's reply: ============================================================== Attention: "Bob T" Strong, Jr.... I am still trying to find the parents of Hiram Strong, who lists his age as 41 and his state of birth as TN in the 1850 Census for Newton Co., MO.... Thanks. Robert E. Strong, Jr. =============================================================== Hi, Bob,,, Sandra Strong Rolff, wife of James R. ("Jim") Rolff <[email protected]> is a direct descendant of Hiram F. Strong. ---------- Rolff gave these data about Hiram F. Strong, M. D.. He was born 28 MAY 1819 in Scott Co., VA, a son of Thomas Strong and Annie Fields Strong, formerly of North Carolina. In 1841 he married, first, Phoebe Jane Godsey. He married, second, Nancy M. Preston. He married, third, "Francy". Hiram and Phoebe Strong relocated in 1849 to Johnson County, Kentucky, where he appeared on the 1850 through 1880 census. A second Hiram Strong is mentioned on Page 156 or Rolff's manuscript. This Hiram was born about 1836-1838 in Virginia; he was shown on the 1850 and 1860 census of Samuel Strong of Scott Co., VA. A third Hiram Strong--Hiram K. Strong--was the son of William Strong of Scott Co., VA. Hiram K. Strong was born in June, 1859, in Virginia, per his 1900 census record in Scott Co., VA. "BoB T." ============================================================== ERRATA: I was incorrect in reporting in a message earlier today, 26 SEP, that Sandra Marie Strong Rolff was a descendant of Hiram F. Strong. She descended from Hiram F. Strong's brother, William Dodson Strong, as follows: 1. Thomas Strong m. Annie Fields; resided Scott Co., VA 2. William Dodson Strong 3. John W. Strong 4. Thomas Martin Strong 5. Elmer Wharton Strong 6. Sandra Strong m. James R. Rolff I also overlooked that there were two persons named Hiram F. Strong in Rolff's book. Hiram F. Strong, #2, was born in 1844 in Greene Co., TN, and died while a prisoner of the Confederate Army in 1864, when he was hospitalized at Augusta, GA. He had only one child, a daughter, Mahala F. Strong. This is Hiram Strong # 3 in the discussion below. ============================== Reviewing the information about Hiram Strongs in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, VOLUME V, the information about one of the Hiram Strongs in not consistent with Jim Rolff's report. I am not certain which is correct. And I also found a fourth "Southern Strong" named Hiram. Let me talk about him first. 1. Beginning on Page 581 in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES #V is a section about "Thomas Strong of Virginia". It is my opinion that this Thomas Strong was a son of David Strong of Campbell and Charlotte Counties, Virginia, and Giles County, Tennessee. I will not go into details. In 1850 this Thomas was residing in Lauderdale County, Alabama, just over the state line from Giles County, Tennessee. In his household were six children, five of whom were born in Tennessee in the 1830s. Some of his children later migrated back into Giles County. According to the account in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, #V, one of the children of Thomas Strong was Hiram Newton Strong, born on 23 OCT 1850, too late to be included on the 1850 census. He was thus the son of Mrs. Lydia Loving, who was the second Mrs. Thomas Strong; they were married in early 1850 in Lauderdale County. The date of birth for Hiram Newton Strong is not supported by the 1850 census record, though, which shows a son, Oliver (?) Strong, age one month, thus born in May, 1850. How could Mrs. Lydia Strong have another child five months later? Correspondence, including family records, received from Michael William ("Mike") Strong, 7740 Sentinel Trail, Indianapolis, Indiana 46250, in 1983 mentioned that he had been in contact with a Morris Strong, a grandson of Hiram Newton Strong. Mike said that other records concerning this Thomas Strong family came to him from a June R. Ring, 1925 Sunset Road, Dora, FL 32757. Efforts should be made to find the 1860 census of Thomas Strong and family to document a son, HIram, age about age 9 or 10 years. Lydia Strong reportedly died in 1854. Thomas may have also died by 1860 so Hiram may have been residing with an older brother in 1860. Some of Thomas Strong's sons were residing in Giles County, TN, in 1870 but I did not find Hiram Strong there. ============================= On Page 444 in a section titled "Thomas Strong, Jr., of Rockingham County, North Carolina, and Scott County, Virginia". Three Hiram Strongs are listed on Page 444 and a fourth on Pages 448 and 450. 2. The first was a son of Thomas Strong, Jr., and Annie Fields. "Hiram Strong, b. May 28, 1819, d. after 1888." 3. The son of William Dodson Strong, M.D., who was a son of Thomas and Annie (Fields) Strong: "Hiram F. Strong, b. ca 1844, d. Feb. 25, 1864." This family is continued on Page 447, where the same dates are reported. Added was that he was in the Union Army during the War Between the States and that he died while a prisoner of war at Augusta, GA. He married Martha Jane Jones, who married, second, William Hawkins. 4. The son of Samuel Strong, who was another son of Thomas and Annie (Fields) Strong. "Hiram Strong, b. ca. 1840 in Scott Co., VA, d. around the time of the Civil War." 5. Another grandson of Thomas and Annie (Fields) Strong was Hiram M. Strong, b. 1859 in Scott Co., VA; died 1923 Scott Co., VA. He was a son of William C. R. Strong. [Hiram M. on 1870 census; Hiram K. on 1900 census.] There was no indication in either of these two books that any of these Hiram Strongs went to Missouri. There are some additional Hiram Strongs in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES #V. 6. Page 25: Hiram Strong (1800-1846), son of Cyrus Strong of New England and Illinois. Page 39: Hiram Strong (b. ca. 1805; d. bef. 1848, Champaign, Illinois.) 7. Page 98: Hiram Strong (1860, WI - 1914, WI), son of John Elmer Strong and grandson of Henry Strong. 8. Strong and Great-Grandson of Mastin Strong, of VA, TN, AL. None of these Hiram Strongs are of the right age or were in the right place to be the Hiram Strong for which Robert E. Strong, Jr., is searching. Perhaps the first four update volumes by the Strong Family Association of America (SFAA) should be checked for a Hiram Strong born about 1809. Remember that not all Strongs in Tennessee were "Southern Strongs". Particularly there was Joseph Churchhill Strong of Knox County, TN, who was a descendant of John Strong of MA and CT. Remember, too, that the nativities reported on Census Records were often incorrect. They were often inconsistent from on census to another census. "BoB T." Strong Robert T.
