    1. [STRONG] Stonemason Strongs & SA line

    3. Deidre, Stonemason Strong descendants Regarding the stonemason Strongs and direct descendants. I feel that I can now accurately trace about 5 generations of the stonemason Strongs. This has taken a lengthy amount of research, particularly as there are a number of errors in certain records. What I can say is that if anyone claims to be a descendant of the Strong stonemasons (carrying on the Strong name) they would have to be descendants of Valentine Strong (the father of the infamous Thomas and Edward snr Strong and 4 other sons, who were all born into the stone mason trade). John, a brother of Thomas and Edward, also worked at St Paul's Cathedral. Most of Valentine's sons moved to Box, Wiltshire or Stanford-in-the-Vale, and worked on local houses and parish churches. No one can claim to be a descendant of Thomas Strong, he died unmarried and childless in 1681. The only real rights to descendancy (carrying on the Strong surname) would be through Edward Strong snr. He had 3 sons (if I recall correctly). Of the 3 sons - two are known to have been stone-masons. Edward jnr rising to the most prominence - he did have a son, but he died unmarried and childless at the age of 21, while studying at Cambridge. The other did get married - I have not had time to trace this, although I believe that he was married. An issue that might raise confusion with Strong researchers, is that Edward snr also had daughters - the numbers varying from one to three. Edward jnr also had daughters - three, of whom all married into respected society. The eldest daughter married Sir John Strange (this could be misinterpreted as Strong - which it is not). Sir Strange was the Master of Rolls and carried much credibility. From what I can gather - property inherited through the line of Edward jnr passed through his daughters (most significantly property in St Albans, Hertfordshire). So the only options of descendancy from this family of stonemasons is through one of Valentine Strong's son's, or Edward snr's son John. Information on the Strong's not associated with the construction of large works is minimal. However, I do feel that I am getting somewhere. SA link to the stonemason Strong's The link between my branch of SA Strongs and that of the stonemason Strongs is based firstly on oral history and secondly on intuition. To date I have found no immediate link, but feel that the oral tradition of passing this information down our family line is of value. I believe this as the stonemason Strong's were only a prominent family in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries. For this reason I cannot see anyone beyond the related family attaching themselves to this descendancy in the 19th and 20th Centuries. For the main reason that the stonemason Strongs would have lost their appeal - unless you specifically made an effort to research them. My connection to a family of SA Strong's is through my mother. She is a Strong. Her father was born in Zimbabwe. I can only go back about two generations. A few skeletons in the closet so it has been difficult to trace. I hope this is of use. She is a STRONG through the line of THOMAS, brother to Sir T. Veezey Strong, Lord Mayor of London (1910 /11) However, I have not found out much about that line so any help would be most welcome.
