    3. Carline, I've not received mail containing virus from STRONG-L, and I receive everything that goes through the list. It is highly unlikely this list is the source of the virus you mention. Please see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus.html If you need further information or continue to suspect the list as a source of messages containing a virus, please contact me off list and I will do what I can to help. Thank you, Russell Laird STRONG-L admin rll.geo@yahoo.com --- Carline Agee <cagee@ntown.com> wrote: > Someone on this mailing list appears to be infected > with a virus/worm. You should be able to read the data without executing it. Norton should then clean it up so you can rewrite the useful data back on a CD-R. You may have to install your CD-R temporarily on the old computer. Regards, Ralph

    3. For Jim, On my CD-R system (H-P), when I eject a freshly written CD, I am given a choice of leaving it 'open' or 'closed'. 'Open' in this sense means that I can continue to read and write to it but only in a CD-R (RW) drive. 'Closed' means that it can be read in most CD drives, including CD-R drives. At this point however, it cannot be further written to unless reopened for that use. Sadly, these options are not so clearly explained. If this is the trouble that your friend is experiencing then I believe the answer requires that he do the following: 1. Put his CD in the CD-R drive. 2. Start his CD-R system in 'Create a CD' mode and follow the instructions to make it writable(sp?) again. At this point, it must be left in the CD-R drive if alterations are required either manually or by his anti-virus program. It can later be made 'read only' in another step. What is puzzling here however, is how a virus got on a disk that was 'read only'. Assuming access is the problem, a second method of dealing with it is to copy the entire CD to the hard drive, repair the problem and then write the corrected data to a new CD. In this case, it is important that the 'program' not be run or used so as to avoid the possibility of spreading whatever virus problem there may be. I am forwarding the comments I have received from the Wx Forum. I don't know if the suggestions are helpful, as I may not have interpreted the problem correctly. Is it possible to read the disk at all? I presumed that the disk was closed to be read only before this problem occurred? Regards, Ralph Strong

    3. Martha, We (Norton antivirus and I) have traced them to an address m??????@irrc.com But no one has the address. They said to use the ? marks when talking on the net about for safety reasons! Their name could be a trap for the worms and/or viruses! The index of names for the Thomas line book was one of the ones destroyed. I will do only one thing at a time on this computer. Never again will run more than one program at a time. I found a old CD from last year with some of the last records on it. All of my e-mail for the last two years is gone! 3. Not at this time! Just have to start over and work harder. Do you know of anyplace I can send two CD's to have three different viruses removed. I use Norton Antivirus, It will not delete files on a writeable CD. I have friends and family that use all kinds of antivirus programs and they are unable to clean my five writeable cd! I have e-mailed a few sites on the net that do disk recovery just one replied to me, they will not try it! As you see I am using outlook express for my e-mailer now. My Eudora light E-mail program was destroyed. Thanks for asking! 3. One week ago I receiver the above worm as an attachment (border.pif) while was backing up my Strong Data on to my CD-R. Now I have a cd that I can not risk reading because it has a worm on it that I can not erase and I now have 8 GB hard drive not a 80 GB one. Three years down the drain! Please be careful what you are sending other people. My computer is clean again! Jim jgilbert@hiwaay.net

    2. Joseph L. Anjier
    3. Since I contacted the list last Nov. I have found more information on my STRONG family. Nathan D. Strong m. Lelia Christmas Oct. 2 1875 in Grass Lake, MI. He was born in Michigan in 1851 & she was born in Michigan in 1856. They were married in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Grass Lake. His occupation is listed as farmer. On the 1880 Grass Lake , Michigan Census Nathan & Lelia are listed with Jonah & Mary Miles. His parents are listed as being born in New York. His occupation is listed as farmer. Their daughter, Viola was born Nov. 7 1884 in Jackson, MI. On the 1900 Jackson, Michigan Census Nathan is listed with a different wife but his daughter, Viola is sill living with him. His occupation is now prison keeper. On January 15 1904 Viola married Joseph L. Anjier in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Her residence was listed as Grayson County, TX. I am wondering if anyone on the list has Strong family ancestors from Grass Lake in Michigan or Grayson County Texas. Thanks, Joe Anjier Baton Rouge, LA
