    1. RE: [STRONG] Y-DNA Study Update 4 June 2003
    2. Melinda McLemore Strong
    3. David, I was just going through some of the papers we have accumulated over the years in trying to find out more about Ralph Bernard Strong of Collin County, Texas. I got a letter some years back from a lady in Collin County, Texas who had a Strong ancestor from Dublin Ireland. Her mother was a professional genealogist in that area of Texas. I didn't know if you might be interested in trying to contact her or not. Her name and contact info as of July 1997: Minnie Pitts Champ 1413 Harroun Ave. McKinney, TX 75069-3430 972-562-6543 email mchamp@airmail.net webpage http://homepage.usr.com/c/ccbc Her Irish Strong ancestor was Michael Strong b 12 May 1791 dp. Cloghran-Hidart Cem., Blanchardstown, Co Dublin he was the father of Thomas Strong,b 10 Mar 1803 in Dublin and who died 20 Nov 1890 in Kentucky Feel free to follow up, or totally ignore, as you see fit. Melinda Strong -----Original Message----- From: David B. Strong [mailto:dbsandmd@attcanada.ca] Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 9:35 PM To: STRONG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [STRONG] Y-DNA Study Update 4 June 2003 Hello All! We have 6 new results posted in our Patrilineal Strong-Stronge-Strange-Strang-LeStrange & Armstrong Y-DNA Study since my last update message to the various Rootsweb Lists (Note, I did send interim messages in the meantime to certain persons with specific interests, and the foregoing statement does not include my recent message regarding the Matrilineal mtDNA Study). We have 28 Y-DNA participants in the Patrilineal Study, with 27 results posted, and are awaiting completion of testing for one additional kit. Of the 6 results posted since my last message concerning the Y-DNA Patrilineal Study, one has been for the "Donegal Bay Group" (note new group name, comprising the old Donegal & Fermanagh Group), four for an overall Group dubbed "Strange of Balcaskie", and one for Co. Longford, Ireland. Many of you will have noticed I have revised certain aspects of the DNA Results webpage. The page was getting too large to load rapidly, and it was awkward to revise. I have broken the page into three sub-pages, all linked together; and compiled some of the analytical detail into various DNA Notes which can be accessed from links on the DNA Results page. I particularly invite your attention to Notes 7, 9, 10, 11, 12; and any related notes or linked pedigrees. Those notes will help explain the significance of the latest results and the changes in the Lineage Groupings used on the DNA Results webpage. As usual, I invite your review, comments and questions. There are some aspects of the DNA Results to date which should be discussed. First, re the four Donegal Bay results, they tend to confirm a hypothesis that the various Strong families clustered around Donegal Bay and extending easterly into County Fermanagh are all related. The DNA signature of these kits is quite distinctive, and is discussed in Note 7. There are indications that the Donegal Bay Strongs have a heritage which may include non-paternal events predating their arrival in Ireland, eg., before about 1665, or perhaps which predate the adoption of surnames. Their lineage may reach in antiquity to certain Norman families which may have included heritage from members of Roman legions who had East Asian roots. Blood Group B is quite typically found in members of the Donegal Bay families, including some lines that have not yet been tested. While not a conclusive marker for inclusion in the Donegal Bay lineages, Blood Group B does have heritable characteristics which can be transmitted through many generations within a lineage. I anticipate posting a further explanatory note before long. You will note realignment of certain lineages within an overall designation, "Strange of Balcaskie". Reasons for the alignment are discussed in Note 11. Basically there are three or four subgroups included in the overall designation: The main Strange of Balcaskie lineage, now including the former Pennsylvania Strong kit; a group which may be related to the Baronial family, Stronge of Tynan Abbey; a third group consisting of the family lineages from Counties Down & Antrim in Ireland, including the South Carolina Strongs, who seem to share some DNA characteristics with the Tynan Abbey lineages; and possibly a fourth sub-group comprising the Sligo lineage, which, while 4 steps removed from the Tynan Abbey lineages, remains closest to that lineage of all those tested so far. Most recently, the results from Kit #8915 have been posted, and are found to be just 3 steps removed from Kit #5825. Note #12, relating to the latter kit which represents a lineage tracing it's roots to the Shetland Islands of Scotland, and has on further analysis been found to be more closely aligned with the New England and Southwest English lineages than with the Scottish groups umbrellaed under the "Strange of Balcaskie" designation. There is some indication that the Shetland Islands lineage may in fact have English origins... which may explain the degree of closeness with Kit #8915. The latter kit, from a lineage with roots in County Longford, Ireland, carries with it some prior speculation that the Longford Strongs may have originated in Southwest England... which may be born out by the comparison with the New England and Southwest English Kits and the Shetland Islands Kit. There are notable differences to be observed in the DNA marker values which probably indicates the lineages may have divided from the other English lineages many generations ago. During the coming summer months here in North America I will continue to accept new participants in the study... however, I may be somewhat haphazard in my responses and not as prompt as some might wish. I will be traveling, working on "outside" projects, and otherwise enjoying the summer. My computer projects and genealogical persuits will probably suffer by comparison... I hope you will bear with me if I am somewhat slow to report for the next few months... and that you all enjoy the season as well! {:-) Regards Dave Strong ... 1. [STRONG] DNA Study Update 2 June 2003: Y-DNA & mtDNA projects
    2. David B. Strong
    3. Hello Everyone! I have been awaiting a set of results in the Y-DNA Study... which have been quite slow in arriving. The anticipated results have not yet arrived, so I am proceeding with an announcement regarding an expansion of the testing program to include mtDNA testing. When I do receive the results in the Y-DNA study, I will make a further update at that time. As part of the new program, let me introduce Debby Peare, of the State of Maine. She has joined the Rootsweb Strong-List (it may be a bit of overload for her to join all of the other lists just yet), and has volunteered to construct and supervise a related mtDNA study. As you know, our DNA Project to this point has been a "Patrilineal" study of the male Y-DNA chromosome. The new project is a "Matrilineal" study of mt, or mitrocondrial, DNA. We each, both men and women, have a copy of mtDNA. Males have a copy of our mother's mtDNA; however, we cannot pass that copy to our children. Females not only have a copy of their mother's mtDNA but can also pass it on to each of their children. Note particularly that, barring mutations, the mtDNA copy passed from mother to daughter is identical through thousands of years. It takes considerable design-work, and cooperation from many genealogists who are not all limited to the patrilineal surnames in the Strong-Stronge-Strange-Strang-LeStrange & Armstrong DNA Study, to construct a useful project from a genealogical standpoint. It may be years before enough information is compiled by the various genealogists worldwide to do a useful job of comparing and tracing the Matrilineal genealogy of the participants in the study. We are going to try to help do just that. In addition, however, there are is immediate gratification for participants in the mtDNA project: The genesis for much of the Genealogical DNA Studying being done today is a book entitled "The Seven Daughters of Eve", written by Professor Brian Sykes of Oxford University in England based on his research of mtDNA. Later research has shown that there are at least 26 additional "Daughters", for a total of 33. Testing in the mtDNA project will result in participants' learning from which of the 33 "Daughters" they are descended. As another researcher has said, "I must admit that I am quite curious as to what emotions will surface when I gaze into the eyes of Oetzi, the 5300 year old Tyrolean "iceman", since we have the same mtDNA haplotype and therefore share a common ancestor - albeit some time back.... I wished to find out where each person's deepest known maternal ancestor came from to determine possible relationships within a genealogical timeframe..." You are invited to visit Debby Peare's new website, which is linked to the main Y-DNA Surname webpages and utilizes a discounted "group" pricing structure from Family Tree DNA; see: http://roseoftheknights.com/strongdna.html While it is too early to show any results for the mtDNA study, participants will be welcomed! Maybe YOU are related to The Iceman! {:-) Note, if you are a participant in the Y-DNA testing project, you are entitled to a additional discount against the cost of the mtDNA test. You can find the order and pricing structure on your personal page at FTDNA. If you elect to proceed with the additional testing, no further test samples are required; FTDNA can perform the testing from your existing sample. However, we would encourage you to submit a pedigree to Debby showing your maternal ancestry. This is an opportunity for persons to participate in the DNA Studies who previously were unable to participate in the Y-DNA project. You are all encouraged to visit Debby's new website, and join up! I am sure she will welcome inquiries from interested persons! Regards, Dave Strong ... 1. [STRONG] Ralph STRONG of Ohio born ca 1856-1858
    2. Melinda McLemore Strong
    3. Ralph Bernard STRONG (1857 Ohio – 1929 Oklahoma) is my great-great grandfather. And for some twenty years now, I have been trying to find out more about his family of origin, with little success. In an effort help break through this frustrating brick wall, I participated in the Strong DNA Study. The results, of my test, along with results for more than 20 other participants, are posted at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnaresults.htm My DNA (kit #5858) was a high resolution match to the DNA of two documented descendants of “Elder” John STRONG of England and Massachusetts. This means we almost certainly share a common ancestor. My wall was finally beginning to crumble. I immediately ordered the reprint of Benjamin Dwights’ STRONG FAMILY HISTORY, to see if I could tie the information I had gathered to date into those volumes. If you would like to participate in the DNA study yourself, contact study administrator David B. Strong, at the following email: dbstrong@sos.net. You can also contact David at PO Box 406, Burlington, WA 98233. Maybe this will help with your brick walls! To make matters worse, we could not find EITHER of these Ralph’s in the 1870 census. But on the 1880, there are once again two Ralph STRONG’s, born in Ohio, of the same age. One of them is my great-great grandfather, Ralph Bernard STRONG, who was married and living in Collin County, Texas with his wife and young son. The other was a 22 year old delivery wagon driver, living in Cleveland, Ohio, with the family of John and Nettie WEBB. But which Ralph belonged to which family? Below are extracts from the 1860 Ohio Census, detailing the makeup of the two STRONG families with young sons named Ralph: 1860 OHIO CENSUS Lake County, Willoughby Township Roll 996, page 312 Strong, Samuel age 30 Ohio Occupation: Carriage Maker Strong, Sarah age 38 Ohio Strong, Ralph age 4 Ohio Strong, Harry age 2 Ohio Strong, Mary age 1 Ohio 1860 OHIO CENSUS, Trumball County Bristol Township #1418-1379 Strong, David age 40 M Farmer born in NY Strong, Leonora age 28 F born in Ohio Strong, John age 18 M Printers Apprentice born Ohio Strong, George age 16 M born Ohio Attended School Strong, Henry age 14 M born Ohio Attended School Strong, Francis age 7 M born Ohio Attended School Strong, Ella age 4 F born Ohio Strong, Ralph age 2 M born Ohio Strong, Mary age 12 F born Ohio Attended School In examining the 1870 Lake County census, I was unable to locate the family of Samuel and Sarah STRONG. In fact, I could not find them anywhere in either the 1870 Ohio or Texas census index. Maybe the family was in transit, living somewhere between Ohio and Texas. David and Lenora STRONG, along with most of their children, were still living in Trumball County in 1870. However, their son Ralph, who should have been about 12 years old, was NOT listed in their household. It could be he was simply missed by the enumerator, or that he died. Or it might be that he “ran away to Texas.” I was hoping the Strong books might help me narrow down the possibilities. I thought if I could find a link to “Elder” John STRONG for one of the families, and not the other, it might clear things up a bit due to the pattern of markers characteristic of the assumed "Elder John" or "New England" STRONG Haplotype. However, it appears both families are likely descendants of Elder John STRONG and his first wife Margery DEANE, through their son John STRONG, Jr. In volume I, page 174, of Dwight’s book, the family of Judge John Harris STRONG of Chatham, Ct. and Cleveland, Oh. is listed. He had seven sons and 3 daughters. I think he is a likely candidate as an ancestor of both Samuel STRONG of Willoughby Township, Lake County, OH., and of my Ralph, due to the time period, the location (one son, James Madison STRONG, lived near Samuel in Willoughby Township), and the similarity in given names used in the families. Both Judge John Harris STRONG, and my Ralph STRONG of Texas, named sons Walter, Rodney and Harris/Harry. Unfortunately, in studying Dwight’s history, I was unable to find a direct link from Judge STRONG to the Samuel STRONG living in Lake County, Ohio in 1860. But the circumstantial evidence is strong enough it makes me believe there is indeed a link. I was able to determine that the David B. STRONG, shown on the above extract of the 1860 Trumball County Census, was also listed in Dwight’s book as the son of Ansel STRONG and Hannah Shailer STOCKING. (Volume I, page 194). Incidentally, both Judge John Harris STRONG and David B STRONG follow a similar line of descent: 1) Elder John Strong & Margery Deane 2) John Strong, Jr & Elizabeth Warriner 3) Josiah Strong & Joanna Gillett 4) Josiah Strong, Jr & Hannah Fuller Siblings: 5) Dea. Josiah Strong 5) Benjamin Strong & Mary Harris & Susan Trowbridge 6) Judge John Harris Strong 6) Ansel Strong & Elizabeth Cary & Hannah Shailer Stocking 7) ? Unknown father of Samuel ? 7) DAVID B. STRONG OF TRUMBALL 8) SAMUEL STRONG OF LAKE CO. 8) Ralph Strong of Trumball Co., 9) Ralph Strong of Lake Co., born bet. 1856-1858 born bet. 1856-1858 Based on their ages and location of birth, either of these Ralph’s could be my great-great grandfather, but I don’t have enough information about either of them to know yet for sure. This is what I do know, however: A marriage license for R.B. STRONG and Ella HALL, was issued on 4 October 1877, and they were married on 4 May 1878, in Hunt County, Texas. I could not locate any other Strong families in Hunt County in either 1870 or 1880. 1880 Census: Collin County, Texas (the only other Strong family was from Tennessee) 1900 Census: Hopkins County, Texas 1910 Census: Roosevelt County, New Mexico Territory Mary Ella HALL died 27 Sept 1905 in Comanche Co., Indian Territory (Oklahoma) Issue of Ralph and Mary: 1) Augustus Homer; 2) Walter Winfield; 3) Lee S.; 4) Burt Rodney; 5) Claude; 6) Raleigh (Rolla) J.; 7) Earl Everett; 8) Earnest; and 9) Harry (died young). His obituary reads: RALPH B. STRONG TAKEN BY DEATH Ralph B. Strong, 71 years of age, passed away here at 3:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of Walter W. Strong, 705 S. 8th Street. Cancer was the cause of his death. Funeral services were held at the Beeson Grantham Chapel at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. T.P. Haskins of the Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at the Lawton Cemetery. The deceased was a pioneer resident of New Mexico. He had homesteaded there 22 years ago and lived at Portales. He was brought to the home of his son here in Grantham Ambulance about three weeks ago, when his illness became more serious. Surviving are the wife, seven sons, seventeen grandchildren, and three brothers. The sons are Walter W. and Burt of Duncan; Claude and Earl of Cement; R.J. (Rolla) and A.H. (Gus) of Tintino, New Mexico, and Earnest of Toledo, Oregon. I would be grateful to anyone who can help me finally solve this mystery, and help me claim the CORRECT Ralph as my ancestor.

Note that Dwighy shows James as being the father of only one son, yet the census extract shows that four males between the ages of 5 and 20 lived in his household in 1830. Could these have been additional sons? Stepsons that came to live with him after he married his second wife ca. 1828? I could not locate a James Strong in the 1840 census for Cuyahoga County. According to the 1850 Federal Census, Jame's widow can be located in Cuyahoga County, Olmstead Township, #3616-3816: Laura Strong age 53 F $1,000 Conn. Fanny? age 20 F Ohio Frances age 18 F Ohio Louisa age 17 F Ohio Margaret Miles age 32 F New York Edwin age 9 M Mich. Alicia age 5 F Mich. Additionally, At the time of 1850 census, son James Harris Strong, born ca 1827, he appears to be living in Ohio, Cuyahoga County, Olmstead Township, #3456-3647, in the home of Hiram and Melinda Frisler. Both Hiram and James were listed as Carpenters, so perhaps James was an apprentence to Hiram. James was shown as age 23, born in Ohio. According to Dwight, James was the son of John Harris Strong & Elizabeth Cary. His father, John Harris Strong, was a farmer in Chatham, Ct. (1783-1811). In August, 1811, he removed to Euclid, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Here he was agent for the sale of lands in an about Cleveland (belonging to Lord and Barber, of Haddam, Ct.), and was Judge of the court of common pleas (1817-1823). I am trying to see if James Strong could possibly be the father of SAMUEL STRONG OF LAKE COUNTY, OHIO: THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL STRONG of LAKE COUNTY, OHIO In the 1850 OHIO CENSUS LAKE 220 Kirtland (Township) 85 16 Oct 1850 #124-130 Calvin H. 3. Hi Everyone, About a year ago I found my husband's great great grandfather, Clifton L Strong, in Campbell County, Virginia. Through the DNA study there was a match showing that the late Robert T Strong, Jr and my husband, Robert M Strong, had a common ancestor. I went back through some of Robert T Strong's writings and in an e-mail dated September 5, 1998 he mentions a " 04. John Strong followed his brother, 05. William Strong to Georgia, after spending a few years in Campbell County, Virginia beginning late 1780s". Then in an e-mail dated September 7, 1998 he mentions a "William Strong of Hanover and Campbell Counties, VA died before pensions were authorized". Obviously, I am trying to find the connection to Robert T Strong, Jr's ancestors. I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide. Sincerely, Sharon Lafferty Strong

    3. Participation in the Strong DNA Study has now reached 28. If there had been some exact matches, that number of participants may well have been adequate to test some of the theories that have been around regarding a common ancestor for the various Strong lines that can be identified today. Lacking exact matches (there are two 24/25 matches, one for the line of Elder John Strong of Massachusetts and another for the line of John Strong, Sr. of Virginia), one must engage in probability studies based on mutation rates. That being the case, we are very fortunate to have David B. Strong as the Administrator of the study. Dave has shown a willingness and ability to grapple with the complexities of MRCA ("Most Recent Common Ancestor") analysis when there are no exact matches. But, such analysis requires more data than we currently have. The purpose of this message is to recruit more participants for the study. While I think Dave believes the study will ultimately support the theory that some of the lines have a common ancestor, I have reservations; instead, I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that the lasting importance of this study may be to establish DNA profiles for the various Strong lines that have been the subject of research, so that Strongs who cannot connect through the research might connect through their DNA. My interest is the line of John Strong, Sr. of Virginia, so I wish to make a special appeal for more participants from that line. Thus far, we have only three known descendants enrolled, represented by Kits 5834 (John Sr.>William>James), 6663 (John Sr.>William>Thomas) and 8314 (John Sr.>John Jr.). Kits 5834 and 8314 are a 24/25 match, with the one mismatch being at marker 339, which is known to have a "rapid" mutation rate. Since Kit 5834 is the odd man out for this marker, that suggests Kit 8314 represents the haplotype or DNA profile for the line of John Strong, Sr. of Virginia. However, there are some anomalies. It is surprising to find that Kits 5834 and 6663, both of which show a line of descent through John Sr.'s son William, are only a 21/25 match, which is not considered to be genealogically significant. Mutation analysis may suggest these kits are possibly closer to a 23/25 match, which seems to be the minimum accepted as genealogically significant. Note that Kits 6663 and 8314 are a 22/25 match, which mutation analysis may also increase to a 23/25 match. In summary, my reading of the results to date is that Kits 5834 and 8314 share a common ancestor and that Kit 6663 probably shares the same ancestor if one makes allowances for "rapidly" mutating markers. More participants would be helpful in at least two ways. They might confirm that Kit 8314 represents the true haplotype and has not itself been subject to mutations. (Dave speculates there may have been a mutation at marker 447, which would result in a 24/25 match for 8314, a 23/25 match for 5834 and a 23/25 match for 6663; with allowances for rapidly mutating markers, all three might be viewed as 24/25 matches with the true haplotype.) If Kit 8314 turns out to represent the true haplotype, additional participants might help bridge the gap between Kits 5834 and 6663 and provide a better framework for mutation analysis. If my line is at all representative, the number of direct male descendants of John Sr. of Virginia may be dwindling. If you are a direct male descendant, please consider joining the study in order to help establish the haplotype for our line for all posterity. The home page for the study is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnastudy.htm. Please review the webpages and consider joining the study. 3. Hello Everyone... I have posted another update for the DNA Study results. See: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnaresults.htm We have three additional results, one each in the New England, Southern, and Donegal&Fermanagh groups. Additionally, I have created an experimental Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) page for certain of the groups which I hope you will find "entertaining". And, I have made some changes in the presentation relating to Haplogroups, which may be of interest to some. I would invite your attention to the links to Dr. David Roper's website analyzing numerous families to determine whether they fit within paleolithic or neolithic haplogroups. Two of our kits were used in a recent update of Dr. Roper's analysis... kits #6811 and #6491. Also, I have included brief mention of the publicly searchable DNA databases.... Y-STR and Y-base. If enough of our participants submit entries to the Y-base database (and advise me of the fact) I may in the future add a link from the results page. Note, be careful when entering the data... I took care to NOT publicly list my name and email address when doing so. One can still be contacted thru the Database, which is part of the reason behind it, but identity can be protected from spammers, etc. We now have 22 sets of results posted. We have 4 kits at the lab for testing, and one sample kit not yet returned for testing. I suspect the four kits currently being tested will have results this coming week or the week following. If the results are forthcoming next week, I will be out of contact for the week and will address the results for posting after that. Regards Dave Strong ... 3. Hello Everyone. I've just posted a set of updated results in the DNA Study. There are additional results which represent PP3 values re kits # 6811 and 6643, respectively. Apparently, someone at the lab has been on vacation, as we have had a lull in receiving results until now; hopefully we will have additional results soon. We now have 27 participants in the study; with results posted re 22 of them. The analysis of results is an on-going process; I have updated the "Interpretation of Results" section of the webpage again. Please take a look at the results, and pass along any questions or comments which you may have. See: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnaresults.htm We welcome any additional participants who may wish to join. Now that we are beginning to see the development of certain recognizable "haplotypes" in the study, I hope we can become fairly effective in assisting some participants to narrow the scope of their research by identifying the likely lineage group of their previously unknown ancestry, eg., we hope to aid in "breaking down some of the brickwalls". {:-) There are probably more distinct haplotypes out there, however, and we can use all the help we can get in establishing their DNA "signatures". In addition, I am aware that at some time in the past certain members of the Armstrong List may have had some testing done; I believe it was by "Ancestry". I would be most interested in discussing the results from that testing with them. There are some problems in comparing results between testing organizations, but it might be very useful to review the results. (I suspect there may be relationships between persons bearing differing surnames (but who have similar DNA signatures), which may be traced to various events. A considerable number of such relationships may occur with regard to persons having Scots or Border ancestry, and I am interested in trying to track such relationships.) I hope to hear from the interested persons involved. Regards Dave Strong ...
