"Sandy-........... We did put the URL for the Association for Gravestone Studies in yesterday's ML(missing Links). Seems to me that is the single most useful rallying point, the AGS, that is. Its mission is "to foster appreciation of the cultural significance of gravestones and burial grounds through their study and preservation." For individuals, seems to me the most useful thing is to learn what the local and state laws are where one lives, and to determine whether existing cemeteries in one's locality have been surveyed recently -- and if not to figure out a way to make that happen before the next shopping mall or parking garage or airport runway or interstate is constructed in the area.............Julie" So I guess we ALL need to give the AGS the Indiana story ASAP.. Missing lLinks also received 17 other messages regarding Indiana. They will do their part. We must do ours. Sandy Hunt in Lubbock Texas(The Governor doesn't know what hes in for!--lay it on.) .

    2. I am not sure what you are talking about - but don't expect the State of Indiana to jump on the band-wagon for anything - since they (we) are only one of two states who have not adopted DST. They don't do anything very quickly here. Karen

    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. ================================================================= After posting my earlier message about David Strong and Peter Strong, I located the pages from Dwight's genealogy of the Strong family that I had photocopied about Peter Strong. Found on Pages 796 and 797. Dwight reported he was a son of Daniel Strong and Esther Chappell, and descended from Jedediah Strong. Peter Strong was born 14 JUL 1764 and died in Fayetteville, NC, on 27 JUN 1797. He was a jeweler. He married Mary McKay. She married second Frank Shackelford, Esq., of Charleston, SC. She died 4 FEB 1846 at Fayetteville. Children of Peter Strong and Mary McKay: 1. Lydia Ann Strong, b. 12 NOV 1792, married Charles Rhodes Two children and two gandchildren named. 2. John McKay Strong, "Major", b. 12 AUG 1796, married Eliza Beebe. He relocated to Selma, Alabama, where he served as Postmaster, Justice of the Peace, and first Mayor. In 1869 he was living and residing near Montevallo, Alabama. Seven children named. "Bob T." Robert T. Strong, Jr. 119 Mystic Way Madison, Al 35757-8801

"BoB T." Strong ================================================================== Dear Bob Please feel free to post this on the list. I hope it will help somebody in the near future. I have not found too much on this JOHN STRONG other than his LAND DEED, CENSUS and now his WILL. I would love to fit him into the Southern Strong's. What I have found is that his property was in/near that part of CUMBERLAND CO., KY that became MONROE CO., KY in 1820, when MONROE CO., KY was fromed from parts of CUMBERLAND and BARREN CO., KY. JOHN STRONG's property was not that far from my SAMUEL STRONG's property that was in BARREN CO., KY until that area also bacame MONROE CO., KY in 1820. Hope this isn't too confusing. Dave Strong (Indpls, Indiana) =================================================================== Hi, Dave! While searching through several pages I photocopied from Dwight's 1871 genealogy of the descendants of John Strong, 1635 immigrant to Massachusetts, I came across this article in an appendix about John Strong of Cumberland County, Kentucky. The article entitled "John Strong of Albany, KY" is found on Pages 1534-1535. I will only quote the first paragraph about John and omit the three paragraphs about his children. "John, Michael and William Strong, brothers, were involved in the Emmet rebellion in 1798 in Ireland. When that collapsed the three brothers escaped secretly and landed in 1799, in Philadelphia, and after tarrying in that city for a few months they separated from each other, and he never afterwards heard either from them or of them. He located at last in Cumberland, Clinton Co., Ky. [sic], on a farm near what is now Albany. In 1808, he married Elizabeth Williams. He died in 1820, and she married a second husband (name not given) who was living in 1868 in Woodson, Illinois. He had three children: I. Rev. William Hardin Strong. II. Prince Alfred Strong. III. Jane Strong." I. Rev. William Hardin Strong. Born 26 AUG 1809. Campellite [Disciples of Christ?] preacher. Married 1832, Josephine Dawson of Danville, Kentucky. Resided in Winchester, Illinois; Morgan County, Illinois; and Girard, Illinois. Apparently living in 1871 when Dwight published his genealogy. 10 children named. II. Prince Alfred Strong. Born 1811. Married Frances Renfro at Lexington, Kentucky. Relocated to Illinois in 1838 and to California in 1867. Apparently living in 1871. Four children named. III. Jane Strong married Harvey Burnett of Lancaster, Kentucky. Moved to Alton, Illinois in 1842. She died there in 1848 or 1849. Seven children named. It appears that Clinton County was probably formed out of Cumberland County after 1820. Albany in 1871 was in Clinton County and still is. Albany is near the Tennessee State line, north of Overton Co., TN. Clinton County, KY, is east of Monroe and Cumberland Counties, KY. I cannot evaluate the validity of the story about the three immigrant brothers but assume there is a passenger list or other records that will verify the story. Dwight did not cite his sources. Could the Michael Strong from Ireland mentioned be of interest to William L. (Bill) Strong or to Rev. Micheal Strong, subscribers to the Strong Mail List? While researching my wife's ancestors in this area of Kentucky (south central) I recall abstracting some Strong records, but at the moment I cannot locate those records. "Bob T." Robert T. 3. On 15 August 98, Dave Clark <[email protected]> posted a query on GenForum, requesting information about the Strong ladies who married sons of Lt. William Clark(e). Some of you may wish to correspond with him, either directly, or indirectly by posting a reply message on GenForum. http://www.genforum.com/strong/ If you have never visited GenForum, you might want to post a query there about your Strong connection. You will reach a few Strong researchers who are not currently subscribed to the Strong Mail List. ======================================================= Here is the WWW address for the Genealogy Page at the National Archives and Records Administration. The page contains a general description of the holdings of the National Archives of interest to genealogists and links to more information about the Regional Branches. I did not find on the Military Records page the Form number for ordering records or how to request these forms. A section on Immigration Records (Ship Passenger Lists) is marked "New". I was surprised to learn that selected microfilm was available for rental; all microfilm is available for purchase. http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/genindex.html Don't forget to check the holdings in the Genealogy Collection at your nearest metropolitan public library and nearby universities. Some libraries have purchased many of the Military Records on microfilm, as well as the census records on microlim. "Bob T." Robert T. Strong, Jr. 119 Mystic Way Madison, Al 35757-8801

    2. Checked all my notes and can find nothing definitiive re Sarah's last name. Until such time as someone can come up with something solid I must leave that question mark after her name. On the other hand I can find no other Sarah Strong marrying a Clark. Sounds quite reasonable but no proof. 3. FAMILY NOTES for Thomas Strong Sr. and Thomas Strong Jr. HUSBAND NOTES: Thomas Sr. STRONG General: !Thomas Sr. is listed on page 701 of the "Commemorative Biographical Record" of Grant Co, WI as a member of an old family that dates back before the American Revolution in New England. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. I have no additional information. However, I suspect he was probably in NC or VA at the time of the war. WIFE NOTES: Martha Mary BOND CHILD NOTES: Thomas Jr. STRONG General: !Thomas (Jr.) is on the 1850 Census on page 210 in Grant Co, WI. Also listed were his wife, Mary, and eight children. A biographical record is given on pages 701-702 in "Commemorative Biographical Record" of Grant Co. He "spent about three years in TN prior to coming to WI, where he followed mining and farming." On the 1842 Census of the Eastern Division of Grant Co, WI, there is a Thomas Strong listed as having a spouse and 6 males and 4 females. I am not sure how they counted them or if there may have been other children not found on later censuses. At that point, there should have been only 5 children, not 10 as the census may seem to suggest. Earlier, in the 1836 Census for Iowa County (the boundaries kept changing) it appears that he probably was living there with seven other individuals. Since his daughter Mary was indicated on the Censuses as having been born in WI in 1835, it is probably safe to assume the Thomas Strong on the 1836 Census and the Thomas Strong on the 1842 Census are this Thomas Strong (Jr.). It seems that this information would tend to place the family somewhere in the TN area about 1830 and perhaps in NC or Virginia near the TN border earlier. -----Original Message----- From: Robert T. 3. My handwritten index of Southern Strongs in the War of 1812 has no Thomas Strongs from North or South Carolina, but two from Virginia: one served in the Fourth Regiment, Virginia Militia, and the other served in the Fifth Regiment, Viginia Militia. That's all I have in my index, but it should be enough for you to obtain copies of their files from the National Archives. I think I have heard it said that the National Archives has a web site from which you can order forms, etc., but I have not checked it and do not have an URL handy. Try doing an Internet search for the National Archives using Alta Vista or Web Crawler. The National Archives charges a small handling fee to cover mailing costs, etc. The way it worked 10 or 15 years ago, you obtained blank copies of the forms, send in a query, they did a search and reported to you what they found and the cost to obtain copies, THEN you sent a formal order with payment. It was a fairly slow process back then. I recommend you request a search for the entire file of these two soldiers. That could include enlistment record, pay rosters, survivor's pension application, bounty land application(s), and widow's pension application. Good searching, "Bob T." Robert T.
