    3. =============================================================== On Wednesday, 9 SEP 1998, I wrote the following: =============================================================== The purpose of the following discussion is to caution you that But there were other William Strongs who migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia, about this time. My advice is to do further research on the William Strongs of Wilkes County, GA, before accepting the conclusion that it was William, son of John Strong of Rockingham County, NC, who married Susannah Hardeman. The conclusion is probably correct, but there is a degree of uncertainty. Particularly there was William Strong, Jr., son of William Strong, Sr. The elder William Strong's migrations took him from St. Martin's Parish, in western Hanover County, VA, to Goochland Co., VA, to Buckingham County, VA, to the part of Wilkes County, GA, that eventually became Clarke County. William Strong, Jr., was a Revolutionary War soldier and soon after the war he relocated to Georgia, where his records are found in Wilkes, Franklin, and Clarke Counties. William Strong, Jr., of Buckingham County, GA, last appeared on the personal property taxes of that county in 1785. He was apparently residing in Georgia by 1786. > CORRECTION: Should be Buckingham County, VA INDEX TO THE HEADRIGHT AND BOUNTY GRANTS OF GEORGIA, 1756- 1909, shows that two grants of 200 acres and 50 acres were made to a person or persons named William Strong in Wilkes County, GA, in 1786. (Book LLL, Pages 219 and 261) A grant of 575 acres to William Strong [Jr.] in Franklin County was made in 1790. [Book TTT, Page 772]. The land granted to William Strong was subsequently located in Elbert County, GA. 100 acres on the Fork Creek originally granted to William Strong was sold in 1790 by John and Ann Davis to Charles Kennedy, all of Wilkes County, GA. 50 acres located on Dove's (?) Creek originally granted to William Strong was sold in 1791 by Leonard and Sarah Rice to John Staples. The full transcript of these deeds might give more clues about this William Strong. See Elbert County Deed Book "A". Incidentally, Margaret ("Peggy") Stokes Strong, wife of William Strong, Jr., was the daughter of William and Sarah Stokes of Elbert County, GA. On 21 SEP 1789, William Strong OF WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, was deeded 545 acres on Rocky Creek by Benjamin and Sarah Ashworth of Wilkes County, GA. William Strong OF WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, was deeded 287 1/2 acres on the Big Shoals Creek of the Oconee River in Franklin County, GA, on 11 NOV 1790 by Jesse Webb of Greene County, NC. Ninty-five (95) acres on Big Shoal Creek was purchased by William Strong [Jr.] OF WILKES COUNTY, GA, on 21 OCT 1790 from Willliam Gardner of Wilkes County, GA. There was a deed dated 26 FEB 1796 from William Strong, Jr., OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA, to William Strong, Sr., OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA. The 380 acres conveyed was on the Big Shoal Creek. This last deed seems to prove it was William Strong, Jr., formerly of Buckingham County, VA, who was the grantee or purchaser of land on the Big Shoal Creek of the Oconee River in the part of Franklin County, GA, that became Clarke County, GA. The deed on Rocky Creek could possibly have been to another William Strong. "BoB T." Robert T. Strong, Jr. 119 Mystic Way Madison, AL 35757-8801 ================================================================= To be more accurate, the 26 FEB 1796 deed proved that the younger of two William Strongs then residing in Franklin County, GA, deeded land to the older of two Williams Strongs then residing in Franklin County, GA. It does not necessarily prove a father and son relationship. After posting the message yesterday, I considered this possibility: Could William Strong, son of William Strong of Buckingham Co., VA, , have conveyed land to William Strong, son of John Strong of Rockingham Co., NC, or vice versa? So when did William Strong, Sr., father of William Strong, Jr., depart Buckingham County, VA? The answer is provided by Personal Property tax lists abstracted by James R. (Jim) Rolff, I believe while he was researching at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City. He sent me a typed copy of the tax lists for the entire William Strong, Sr., family. The tax lists show both William Strong, Sr., and William Strong, Jr., in Buckingham County, VA, taxed for Calendar Year 1785, but only one William Strong in Buckingham County for tax years 1786 through 1794. No Strongs were found on the lists for tax years 1795-1797. Records of personal property taxes for 1798-1809 were not available. By 1810, only John Strong was assessed taxes in Buckingham County. This was apparently John Strong, son of my ancestor, Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong, formerly of Goochland County, VA, but who was possibly residing with John Strong in Buckingham County in 1810, per the census for that year showing an older woman in the household. The 1794 tax list for Buckingham County was somewhat confusing as it showed William Strong ("R.S."), Sherwood Strong, and Johnson Strong ("D.W."). If the "R.S." meant Revolutionary War Soldier, then this was the younger William Strong. I have no idea what "D.W." meant, but we know from the Revolutionary War survivors's pension application of Johnson Strong that he had performed public service by working for little or no pay in the Iron Works during part of the War, serving as soldier for part of the War. That the William Strong who remained in Buckingham County, VA, was the elder William is proved by the fact that he was assessed tax on (his son) John Strong in 1788, 1790, and 1791, and on his future son-in-law, S. [Samuel] Bridgewater, in 1793. [Samuel Bridgewater of Clarke Co., GA, had one draw in the 1805 land lottery, indicating he was not then married. He was killed in the War of 1812 and his widow, Jane Strong Bridgewater, subsequently remarried twice. She was the second wife of William M. Stokes, a Revolutionary War veteran; they married on 16 NOV 1815 in Clarke County, GA. Stokes died in 1828 in Coweta Co., GA. Jane married, third, Rev. Humphrey Posey, a missionary to the Cherekees. They lived at Newnan, Coweta Co., GA, where Posey died in DEC 1846. See COWETA COUNTY CHRONICLES FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS, (c) 1928, pages 90, 94. Was William M. Stokes the same person as William Muntford Stokes, the brother of Margaret ("Peggy") Stokes Strong, per the 1794 will of William Stokes of Elbert County, GA? ] The tax lists suggest that by 1795 all of the William Strong, Sr., family was in Georgia, including both William Strong, Sr., and William Strong, Jr. So it is quite likely that the deed in Franklin County, GA, in 1796 was from son to father. It this assessment is accurate, then it was William Strong, Jr., son of William Strong, Sr., who acquired land on the Big Shoal Creek of the Oconee River in 1790. In turn, this proves that William Strong, Jr., was a resident of Wilkes County, GA, as early as 1790 (and probably as early as 1786). Differentiating all the Strongs with the same given names in the same places at the same time surely does keep one from being bored! Jean Sullivan =============================================================== Greetings, Jean Sullivan! I am taking the liberty of forwarding a copy of your message and my reply to the the 170 subscribers to the Strong Mail List, quite of few of whom are descended from William Strong, Sr., of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA, and later (before 1770) Pittsylvania County, VA. William was the progenitor of the Strongs of Guilford and Rockingham Counties, North Carolina. James R. ("Jim") Rolff <[email protected]> is a subscriber to the Strong Mail List and will see your message there. His book is out of print. Information about William Strong, son of John Strong of Rockingham County, NC, is found on page 54 and 55. An appendix on page 427 concerns the William Strong of Wilkes, Oglethorpe, and Troup Counties, GA. These records do prove that it was a William Strong who was residing in Wilkes County, GA, in DEC 1791 who was married to Susannah Hardeman, daughter of John Hardeman of Guilford County, NC. Rolff's logic was that since Judith Hardeman, daughter of John Hardeman, was the wife of Sneed Strong, then William Strong must have been the brother of Sneed Strong, who was a son of John Strong. You might be able to obtain a copy of Rolff's privately published 1983 book on Interlibrary Loan through your local library. Rolff can probably inform you the libraries where copies were deposited. One might be near you. The purpose of the following discussion is to caution you that But there were other William Strongs who migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia, about this time. The deed on Rocky Creek could possibly have been to another William Strong. I recall in the early 1980s researching Strongs in Georgia and discovering about four William Strongs in Clarke and Oglethorpe Counties at the same time. For example, these William Strongs registered in late 1803 or in 1804 to participate in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. 1. William Strong, [Jr.], Esquire, of Clarke County, drew two blanks 2. William Strong, Sr., [the eldest] of Clarke County, drew one blank 3. William Strong, Jr. [the youngest], of Clarke County, drew two blanks 4. William Strong of Oglethorpe County drew two prizes (two land grants) There were ten more Strongs from Clarke and Oglethorpe Counties, who participated in this land lottery, including Samuel Strong and Charles Strong of Oglethorpe County. It took a while to unravel the identities of these four William Strongs with the assistance of Jim Rolff and the other subscribers to his "Strongs of the South" Newsletter. About this time Jim was corresponding with a Ms. Sarah M. Yarbrough concerning these Strongs and Hardemans. She was apparently elderly at the time. I do no have an address for her. In Clarke County, GA, William Strong, Sr, with wife Frances Johnson, died 1816. His son, William Strong, Jr., Esq., with wife Margaret ("Peggy") Stokes, died 1810. William J. Strong, son of William Strong, Jr., and Peggy Stokes, died 1828. But we still find a William Strong, born 1780s, on the 1830 census of Clarke County. Research into the land granted to William Strong of Oglethorpe County in 1805 might prove helpful to you. Where were the grants located? Did he occupy the land or did he sell it? Also migrating from Virginia to Olgethorpe County, GA, were John Strong (brother of William, Sr., of Clarke County) and his son, Charles Strong, a Revolutionary War soldier. Another was Rev. Samuel Strong, possibly also a Revolutionary War soldier, based on Georgia Land Lottery records. None of these three are known to have had a son named William, however. William Strong, Jr., of Clarke Co., GA, was a soldier in the Revolution. There were two William Strongs from Virginia who served in the Revolution. The descendants of William Strong, Jr., claim theirs was the Sergeant in the Third Continental Line. The William Strong from Virginia was a Corporal. I have a copy of Military Land Bounty Warrant 3935, issued to William Strong, who served three years in the Virginia State Line, and was discharged as a Corporal. The warrant, issued on 1 AUG 1785, was for 200 acres. Could he be the William Strong who was identified in the 1827 land lottery of Geogia as a Revolutionary War Veteran who was then residing in Jones County, GA, and who was granted land in Muscogee County, GA, in the 1827 lottery? Could this be your William Strong of Troup County, GA, in 1850? I have not been able to trace the movements of your William Strong-- due to inadequacies in the 1820 Georgia census, for example. He was not found on the 1830 census of Georgia unless he was the William Strong in Clarke County. A William B. Strong, age 30-39, appeared on the 1840 census of Troup County. What is the documentation for the dates of birth and death you reported in your message for William Strong? HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF GEORGIA, compiled by George A. White, New York City: Pudney & Russell, Publishers, (c) 1854, reported on Page 650 that at the last census surviving "old timers" in Troup County, Georgia, included Willimm Strong, age 95. Assuming the age is correct and the reference was to the 1850 census, his year of birth would have been 1755. If the reference was to the 1840 census (more likely) the year of birth would be 1745. I did not find this entry on the 1850 census of Troup County in a household headed by a Strong. He could have been living in a household other than an Strong household, though. One of my ancestors, T. Ervin Moore, moved to Upshur County, TX, before 1860 also, so I have researched in that county and discovered the Strongs there. I should have some census and other notes somewhere in my files. If you will send me your U. S. Mail address I will send you photocopies of the several pages from Rolff's book that pertain to the Strong-Hardeman marriages. Please consider subscribing to the Strong Mail List. You will find instructions about how to subscribe on The Strong Quest web site. http://ro.com/~rts2/quest You should search the archived messages for the Strong Mail List for your William Strong and Susannah Hardeman. 3. Greetings all, Bob has ask me to post a brief message regarding what I know in regards to James Strong, of York Cty, PA To the best of my knowledge and both my research and family legend supports. James was known as James Strong prior to adopting the name of Schim Strang. It is reported that both names were on his gravestone however. The origin of James has never been known, and it could clear up a lot of speculation when it is discovered. In my research I have found two family legends. ONE : James, upon arrival in the colonies, was indentured for a period to Adam Emmenheiser and ended up marrying his daughter. It is during that period that he adopted the name Schim Strang and learned the German language. THIS IS THE MOST COMMON TWO: James was smuggled into the colonies, reason unknown, and changed his name to James Strong at that time and then indentured himself. If reason two is to be believed it would explain why no one has ever been able to find record of his arrival. The arrival of the Emmenheiser family is documented and copies of the ships log exist. I hope that this gives some insight to James, if anyone has additional information, I would certainly welcome it. 1. STRONGS OF COUNTY LONGFORD, IRELAND
    2. DBS &/or MD
    3. Hello David Leahy! Thank You very much for your message of Sunday, Sept 6, 1998, reproduced below. I am taking the liberty of forwarding this message to the Rootsweb Strong-List, as well as a short list of other researchers (some of whom I know to be specifically interested in the Strongs of County Longford, Ireland). I will be pleased to add the data you have provided to the Irish Strong Database, and will do so in a future update. I will also endeavor to include a link to your website on my website. I truely wish we could find more researchers like yourself in the remaining counties of Ireland... your data is quite extensive and welcome! I have a few questions, for which I hope you will be kind enough to supply answers: 1) I note that each of your records relates to the surname STRONG. Perchance, did you also check the variant surnames, STRONGE, STRANG, STRANGE, LESTRANGE? If there are any positive results for these surnames, I would appreciate including them in the Data Base as well. Note that I try to include a "negative report" in the Data Base if these names are NOT to be found in the original records. 2) Under the 1834 Census heading, you have included "prot" as the religion of the individuals listed. Is that how the original census listed the individuals, or was it possibly more specific and included indications of "Church of Ireland", "Presbyterian", "Methodist", and the like? Note, I believe most of the County Longford Strongs were Church of Ireland, although I am aware of some conversions to Catholicism. 3) What is a "Charitable Fund" Marriage? 4) Have you checked the Flax-Growers Bounty Lists? 5) I note both "Carton" and "Cartonamarkey" townlands listed for various records.... Are these different townlands, or is the first a shortened version of the second? 6) I note that there are records of Strongs in Longford back to about 1706, which surprised me a little, although on a second look I see that these records of Ardagh and Kilmore Marriage Licence Bonds 1697 - 1844 might relate to County Cavan as well as County Longford. (I had thought perhaps the Longford Strongs might have resulted from a migration from neighboring Counties Cavan and Monaghan). Can you give any insight into the history of these counties in the period 1600-1750, which might help us trace the origins of these Strongs? Longford, Cavan and Monaghan were not part of the plantation scheme in Ulster... Could these Strongs have been descended from soldiers given military land grants in compensation for services in the English Civil War era??? 7) I note that Richard Greville, Lt. Col. Arthur G. Lewis, and Hon. Capt. F. Maude are listed as Landlords in the Griffiths Valuation data you have provided. Their names seem to be English in origin.... do you have any insights into WHERE in England these landlords might have originated; how their families came into landowner-ship in County Longford; and the location of any estate leasing records which may be available reference the Strongs tenanting under them? 1. Ford Family Database Online
    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. =============================================================== Recently I informed the Strong Mail List about the Ford Family Database, operated by Robert A. (Bob) Thomas of Anniston, Alabama <[email protected]>. At the time of my announcement the online search of the Ford Database was not functioning due to a crash of the Crosswinds Net server. Bob Thomas has informed me that the Ford Family Database is now back online for searching and browsing. You can begin your tour at the following URL and follow the links to the online database. http://pages.prodigy.net/tracks/FORDINQ.HTM However, since this is a very large database and the HTML pages are all large and thus slow to load, I recommend you begin your tour on the HTML page where the family of John Strong with wives, Margery Deane and Abigail Ford, is found. http:// www2.crosswinds.net/birmingham-us/~tracks/ford/dat0.htm >From this point you can either ascend or descend the family tree for either Strong, Deane, or Ford. This site should be of particular interest to those who wish to trace the ancestry of Abigail Ford Strong. Keep in mind that this is a composite database, containing data cotributed by many individuals over an extended period of time. All of the contributed data has not been independently verified by Robert A. (Bob) Thomas. I would be particularly interested in reading Martha F. B. Strong's critique of the ancestry of George Strong, who died in Somerset Shire, England. It is my understanding that Martha does not believe that direct descent from generations earlier than George Strong can be substantiated with source documentation. Despite this, is there any documentation to support the THEORY of this earlier Strong ancestry. Is it a plausible theory? Theories are helpful as they provide a blueprint or roadmap to guide our attempts to construct our ancestries. We must be vigilant, however, to avoid reporting theories as proven facts. When we publish a theory, other less informed family historians have a tendency to report the theory as a proven fact. Enjoy! Robert T. 1. Strongs of Virginia, 1760-1790, Part II
    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. =============================================================== ERRATA #1, Part I, 5 SEP 1998: In a message dated 6 SEP 1998, Megan Scott added this clarification: "... it was John STRONG, Junior" [not John Strong, Sr.], "that made the trip to Virginia. The trip must have been made in 1798 and the couple visited both James STRONG and Sallie (STRONG) Bush(?). John (Jr.) was born in Chester Co, PA, 1762 and lived there all his life." So it was his uncle, James Strong, and his aunt, Sallie Strong, who possibly married a Mr. Bush, that John Strong, Jr., visited in Virginia about 1798. The period, 1760-1790, covered in my 5 SEP 1998 message needs to be expanded to at least 1800. See #62, James Strong, below. ERRATA #2, Part I, 5 SEP 1998: "19. George Strong was born about 1703 in St. Peter's Parish, the third proven son of #1, John Strong, Sr...." should read "19. George Strong was born about 1703 in St. Perer's Parish, the third proven son of John Strong, Sr...." ID #1 had been assigned to John Strong, Jr., born about 1698, son of John Strong, Sr., of St. Peter's Parish. John Strong, Sr., was not assigned an ID number for this discussion since he was not known to be living in Virginia in 1760 or later. ================================================================ ADDENDUM, Part I: 52. Samuel Strong appeared on tax lists of Lunenburg County, Virginia, by 1782. Samuel Strong and his descendants are discussed by James R. Rolff <[email protected]> in his Chapter 20, STRONG FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND OTHER SOUTHERN STATES, published privately in 1983. Samuel Strong was purported to have been a Minister of the Gospel in the Protestant Episcopal Church. By 1805 this Samuel Strong was residing in Oglethorpe County, GA. The following were reported to be children of Samuel Strong. (On the 1810 census of Virginia, however, Samuel Strong households were enumerated in Patrick County, Russell County, and Berkeley County (now West Virginia), leaving a mystery, as only the Samuel Strong in Russell County can be identified. Partick County was formed from original Lunenburg County.) 53. Christopher Billups Strong 54. Martha Strong 55. Creed Taylor Strong 56. Polly Strong 57. W. Easley Strong 58. William Strong 59. A person name James Strong was transported to Virginia aboard the ship, "Susanna" in June 1727. No further information about him is known. Whether he was residing in Virginia during the period of 1760-1790 cannot be proven from my research notes. 60. Mary Anderson, alias Mary Strong, was transportred to Rappahannock County, Virginia, aboard the ship, "Harpooner", Captain John Wilson, Master, in 1740. The ship sailed from London and MIddlesex, England. #59 James Strong and #60 Mary Anderson, aka Strong, were both listed as "convicts" who were sent as indentured servants to Virginia. No other Strongs have been found in Rappahannock (now Essex) County, although a John Strang there in the early 1700s was sometimes mis-identified as John Strong. 61. Abrem Strong was one of the inhabitants of Nansemond County, VA, and Isle of Wight Co., VA, who in 1784 signed a petition requesting a new county be formed. No other records of him are available. ADDITIONAL STRONGS IN VIRGINIA IN 1800: 62. James Strong appeared on the 1800 tax list of Augusta County, VA, with two white males over age 21 and two horses. Based on Megan Scott's report, this is likely the brother of John Strong, Sr., of Chester County, PA. Augusta County is adjacent to Rockbridge County, where the Natural Bridge is located. Where was this James Strong prior to 1800? Who are his descendants? A James Strong household was found on the 1810 census of Augusta County, the 1820 and 1830 census of Rockbridge County, and the 1850 census of Augusta County. It seems likely there are two generations of James Strongs repesented in these census records. 63. John Strong appeared on the 1800 tax list of Brooke County, VA, now West Virginia. He was taxed on one tithe and two horses. 64. Pleasant Strong appeared on the 1800 tax list in Amherst County, VA, with one tithe and two horses. =============================================================== PART II: STRONGS FROM VIRGINIA WHO SERVED IN THE REVOLUTION One of the purpose of this exercise is to see if there were Strongs of record as soldiers in the Revolution who cannot be assigned to one of the Strong families previously outlined. A. Revolutionary War Survivor's Pension Applications File S7594, John Strong of Fluvanna County, VA. A statement by John Strong of Fluvanna County, VA, is also included in File S8188, of William Camron of Fluvanna County, VA, , who married a sister of John Strong. I have seen no other references to the military service of George Strong, who is presumed to be the George Strong of Hanover and Louisa Counties, VA. William Strong of Hanover and Campbell Counties, VA, died before pensions were authorized. D. "The Harvey List": "Miss Margaret B. Harvey's alphabetical list of Georgia Revolutionary Soldiers...Published as Appendix F in the Third Annual Report of the National Society of D. A. R. to the Smithsonian Institution. Senate Documents, Volume 16, Number 219, Fifty-Sixth Congress, Second Session, 1900-1901, pages 369-393." Strong, Charles Strong, I., Quartermaster Sergeant Strong, J. Charles Strong was the pensioner, born about 1763 in Hanover Co., VA. "I. Strong" was possibly Isham Strong, son of William Strong of Hanover, Goochland, and Buckingham Counties, VA, and Clarke County, GA. Isham Strong served in a unit of Scouts and Spys in the Georgia Militia during the period 1792-1796. Technically, this was not Revolutionary War service. [A William Strong served with the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, 3rd Division, Georgia Militia, in 1793-1794. Was this William Strong, Jr., brother of Isham Strong, above?] "J. Strong" was probably the John Strong who served in the Emanuel County, Georgia, Militia, under LTC Jenkins Davis and Colonel John Martin. The Certificate of Service by Col. Martin is on file at the Office of the Secretary of State, Georgia State Capitol. Alternatively, "J. Strong" could have been Johnson Strong, the pensioner, who resided in Georgia for a number of years before relocating to the Missouri Territory and later to Alabama. E. D. A. R. In some of the Georgia Land Lotteries, veterans of American wars were allowed additional draws, even if they had been granted land in previous lotteries. 3. In reference to the search for decendence of Julius Strong..... This is from my Grandmother Gert Strong. She has supplied most of the information to My Step-mother Jan Strong for our geneology search. I had heard thru the family that the name Threehouse was your grandfather's grandmother. It is on his father's death cert., however this is not a concrete fact. I got the name Sally from the picture, as it was noted that she was "Grandmother". It could be all hog wash and we could be climbing up the wrong tree. The place to start is the 1920 census of Solano County, California. Ii'll try to work on that. Grandma thanks, Bill Garcia

    1. Strongs of Virginia, 1760-1790
    2. Robert T. Strong, Jr.
    3. =============================================================== PART I In a recent message, Megan Scott <[email protected]> reminded me that her earliest Strong ancestor was John Strong, who was a resident of Chester Co., Pennsylvania, possibly as early as 1762 when his son, John Strong, Jr., was born. See Pages 201-217 in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, VOLUME V, for some of the descendants of John Strong, Jr. The article does not state the place of birth of John Strong, Jr., but states that he died in Chester Co., PA, in 1857. Megan Scott also related a family tradition that John Strong (Sr.) traveled to Virginia with his wife and a young child to visit a brother. On the trip he passed the Natural Bridge, which is located in the Shenandoah Valley just east of Interestate 81 between Roanoke and Lexington, in the southern part of conteporary Rockbridge County. This story has piqued my interest. Who could be the Strong residing in Virginia that John Strong of Checter County purportedly visited? Following is a brief synopsis of the Strong families in Virignia during the period 1760-1790, including known French and Indian and Revolutionary War soldiers from Virginia named Strong. A more detailed account of some of these families is found on pages 285-287 of STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, VOLUME V. 01. John Strong, Jr., of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County (son of John Strong, Sr. of St. Peter's Parish, VA), born 1698, died by 1751. Mary Strong of Goochland County in the 1770s and 1780s, who was apparent residing with #4, John Strong, below, was probably his widow. This is a RECONSTRUCTED, or theoretical, family, since few records of western Hanover County, VA, prior to 1865, were preserved. There is no will, estate settlement, or other civil records to identify the children of John Strong of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. The REGISTER of St. Martin's Parish, containgin vital records, was not preserved. No family records have been discovered. The family has been reconstructed based mainly on records of the family AFTER they left Hanover County, such as the sworn testimony of #4, John Strong, regarding his own and his brother, #3. Sherwood Strong's, military service. 02. Martin Strong (1st), probably husband of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong 03. Sherwood Strong (1st) [French & Indian War veteran]. Died by 1779. No sons. 04. John Strong (3rd) [French & Indian War veteran.] 05. William Strong 06. Nathan(iel) Strong (1st) 07. Martha Strong m. Eleazar(ius) Williams 08. Elizabeth Strong (alive 1750s) 09. [Possibly "Matt"] 10. [Possibly Mrs. Sarah Blaylock] The above family was in western Hanover County, in St. Martin's Parish, in the 1750s. In 1759, William purchased land in Goochland County and moved there. #4, John Strong was residing in Hanover County in 1763 when his son, Charles Strong, a Revolutionary War veteran, was born. By late 1760s, #4, John Strong and #6, Nathan Strong were both near each other in southeastern Louisa County, near the Goochland and Hanover County lines. About 1770, #4, John moved to Goochland Co., where #7, Martha Strong, was already residing. By 1776, #6, Nathan Strong joined John Strong in Goochland County and appeared to reside on John's property. About 1776, #5, William Strong moved to Buckingham Co., VA. 11. William Strong (1st), son of John Strong, Sr., of St. Peter's Parish, VA, was born about 1701. In 1704, St. Paul's Parish was formed from western St. Peter's Parish. About 1720, Hanover County was formed with the same boundaries as St. Paul's Parish. William Strong was residing in eastern Hanover County, in what remained as St. Paul's Parish after St. Martin's Parish was created. Records of him are found there in the 1730s. Before 1770 he and his family were residing in Pittsylvania County, VA, formerly Halifax County, VA. #14, William Strong, Jr., possibly remained in Hanover County where his estate was being settled in 1770. Most of #11, William Strong's family settled in Rockingham County, formerly Guilford County, North Carolina, about the time of the Revolution. There is no proof that #13 accepted his commission as an officer as he departed the county shortly after the nomination. 12. Mary Strong 13. John Strong (nominated to be Lt. of Pittsylvania Co. militia, 1776) 14. William Strong, Jr., died before JUL 1770, apparently in Hanover Co., VA. No sons. 15. Thomas Strong 16. Sarah Strong 17. Elizabeth Strong m. Samuel Crowley, Rev. War casualty, 1776 18. James Strong 19. George Strong was born about 1703 in St. Peter's Parish, the third proven son of #1, John Strong, Sr. No records of him have been found. However, there was a 20. John Strong residing in Cumberland County, Virignia in the late 1750s and early 1760s who could possibly have been a son of 19. George Strong. The following thirteen siblings were likely the children of the 20. John Strong who is of record in Cumberland County. The connection is found in the Revolutionary War pension file of John Strong, who was residing in Fluvanna County, VA, in the 1830s. He said he was born about 1757 in Cumberland County, VA, and that when he was about eight years of age his family relocated to Hanover County, VA. The earliest tax records preserved for Hanove County show this family residing in the same neighborhood as John Stanley, the eldest, father of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong (see above). The identities of the 13 siblings was proved by a Hanover County deed dated about 1830 which was a division of the estates of two of the sisters. (See Page 290 in STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, VOLUME V, for more details.] All of the sons, below, were in Hanover County, VA, during the Revolution. 21. John Strong relocated to Fluvanna County. 25. William Strong relocated to Campbell County. 26. George Strong relocated to Louisa County. 29. Martin Strong remained in Hanover County. 21. John Strong 22. Sarah Strong 23. Agnes Strong 24. Elsa Strong 25. William Strong [Revolutionary War pensioner.] 26. George Strong [possibly Revolutionary War soldier] 27. Martha Strong 28. Jane Strong 29. Martin Strong (2nd) 30. Elizabeth Strong 31. Judith Strong 32. Mary Strong 33. Anne ("Nancy") Strong One of the two Martin Strongs, probably #2, contibuted beef for use by the Colonial army during the Revolution. #2 was a land owner in Hanover County in 1763, the only year for which real estate taxes were preserved for colonial St. Martin's Parish.. #4, John Strong, also contributed provisions to the Colonial Army during the Revolution but he was not a soldier in the Revolution as has been incorrectly reported. 05. William Strong, son of #1, John Strong, Jr., resided in Goochland County, VA, from about 1759 until about 1776 when he relocated to Buckingham County, VA. Several of his sons served in the Revolutionary War and after the war the sons began to migrate to Georgia, apparently to obtain military land bounty grants. By 1800 all of this family had migrated to the part of Georgia that became Clarke County. 34. Sherwood Strong (2nd) 35. Johnson Strong (Revolutionary War pensioner] 36. William Strong [Revolutonary War soldier] 37. Elizabeth Strong 38. Sally Strong 39. Isham Strong (1st) [U. S. Army AFTER the Revolution; died relatively young] 40. Susannah Strong 41. John Strong 42. Jane Strong 35. William Strong died in Clarke County, GA, 35. Johnson Strong (named for his mother's family, Johnson) migrated from Georgia to Missouri Territory to Alabama, where he died in FAyette County. 34. Sherwood Strong died in Clarke Co., GA, then his widow and family relocated to Coweta County, GA. 39. Isham Strong served in the U. S. Army in a unit of Scouts and Spys after the Revolutionary War. It is uncertain whether he served during the Revolution. He died relatively young and some of his descendants were subsequently found in Kentucky near #41, John Strong. #41, John Strong, departed Clarke County, GA, about 1805 and then spent a number of years in the Missouri Territory before settling in Christian County, KY. 04. John Strong followed his brother, 05. William Strong, to Georgia, after spending a few years in Campbell County, Virginia, beginning late 1780s. The estate of 04. John Strong was settled in Clarke County, GA. 43. Charles Strong [Revolutionary War pensioner; born Hanover Co., VA, ca 1763.] 44. Sarah Strong 45. Robert Strong 46. Catherine Strong 47. David Strong All of the children in this family went to Georgia except #47, David Strong, who resided a number of years in Charlotte County, VA, before relcating to Giles County, Tennessee. There were two more Strong families residing in Norfolk County, Virginia, in the period preceding and during the Revolutionary War. 48. Edward Strong died in Norfolk County, VA, about 1777. 49. John Strong (styled "Captain John Strong") [Revolutionary War soldier] #49, John Strong, resided in Norfolk Co., VA, Richmond Co., NC, and Copiah Co., MS, where he died in 1838. 50. Nathaniel Strong, Sr., was residing in Elizabeth River Parish, Norfolk Co., VA, in 1753, when his son, Nathaniel Strong, Jr., was bound out as an apprentice to Thomas "Miars". 51. Nathaniel Strong, Jr. #51, Nathaniel Strong, Jr., was bound out a second time in 1754 to Mathew Rothery. He appears to have reached tithable age (16 or 21 years, probably the latter) in 1761, suggesting a birth about 1740. He has not been traced after he reached adulthood. There are no facts to support the claim that he was the same person as #6, Nathaniel Strong, above, except they were both in Virginia and of near the same age, and the records of #6 begin a few years after the last known record of #51. On the other hand, there is no definitive proof that #6 was a son of #1 John Strong of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, except for the close affilation of #6 with #4 John Strong and with Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong, the apparent widow of #2 Martin Strong.
