    1. A little more info on James from Ireland
    2. Found some more of my g Aunt Kate Strong's notes. She says that James came to New York with a brother whose name she didn't know. They got separated in NY and James went on to West VA where he ran a pottery in or near Wheeling. He lived, however, just across the border into Ohio. Thelma found a marriage record for James STRONG and Prudence ELLIOT in Ohio just a few months before John was born so I think that John was probably born in the US. Aunt Kate states that she believes he was born in Ireland because he said he was Irish bred, spoke with an Irish accent, and could do a mean Irish Jig. I hardly think this is proof he was born in Ireland. As for the marriage of James and Pridence, they could have had a lay marriage in Ireland and a church marriage in the states (John could have been conceived in Ireland), or they may have not even known each other prior to coming to the states. People got pregnant out of wedlock then too. I just don't know which it is. The really frustrating thing is that Aunt Kate notes that Sherman STRONG of Missouri (son of Finley Ritchy STRONG, John's brother) had all of the documentation but she didn't copy it all down! Is anyone out there looking into the Finley Ritchy STRONG (b. 1825, m. Orleans WRIGHT) line? If so, you may have the info we need. That's all for now. Connie [email protected]

    1. Sarah Strong, dau of Adino Strong
    2. I seeking information on the children of Sarah Strong, daughter of Adino Strong, jr, and Deborah Prime. Sarah Strong was born in the mid-1740s and married Theophilus Baldwin in 1776 at Waterbury, CT. I am particularly seeking information about their daughter Sarah Baldwin, b. Feb 1777, probably the twin of Anor or Aner. This Sarah married Treat Spees in 1793. I have a great deal of circumstantial evidence regarding Sarah Baldwin, but no absolute proof. Among my circumstantial evidence is a notation in Aubrey Baldwin's typescript, some old DAR papers submitted by lines of the family that have the Bible. I have decided to see if someone has traced Sarah Strong Baldwin and if someone has information on her children, especially Sarah. Thanks for any assistance. Judy Dunn [email protected]

Mary Strong, of Hanover and Goochland Counties, Virginia, was probably his widow. Mary resided with her son, John Strong, III, until at least 1787, the date of her last record in Goochland County. Shortly thereafer, John Strong, III, and his wife, Elizabeth, relocated to Campbell Co., VA; they later joined William Strong, below, in Georgia. Children of John Strong, Jr., were: Martin, John III, Sherwood I, William, probably Nathan(iel), probably Martha m. Williams, possibly Sarah m. Blaylock / Blalock, probably Elizabeth. A "Matt" was also mentioned in records but it is not certain whether he was a son; the omission of a last name suggests he may have been a slave. >GENERATION 03: William STRONG, Sr., born probably around 1730, probably St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA, married before 1759, Frances Johnson. Resided Hanover County; relocated to Goochland County, VA, about 1759; relocated to Buckingham about 1776; relocated to Georgia about 1794 or 1795 where he resided in the territory that became Clarke County, GA. Died testate in Clarke Co., GA, before 6 MAY 1816. Frances Johnson Strong died testate in Clarke County, GA, before 7 JAN 1828. William Strong had a brother, Sherwood Strong, 1st, who was a soldier in the French and Indian Wars (fought on and off between 1754-1763), who died before 1779 in VA. >GENERATION 04: Sherwood STRONG, 2nd, was probably born in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA, prior to 1759, as his birth and/or christeneing was not recorded in the Register of the St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, VA. He was not of tithable age when his father was taxed in Goochland County in 1775, proving he was born subsequent to 1753. Sherwood Strong, 2nd, was a tithable in his father's household in Buckingham County, VA, from 1782 (earliest available) throught 1794. He apparently relocated to Georgia with his father and brother, Johnson Storng, in 1794 or 1795. Some of his descendants became members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) but I suspect that he was confused by them with Sherwood Strong, 1st, or that the memberships were based on public service rather than military service. No military records have been documented. The DAR applications of his descendants may contain valuable information, such as the identity of his wife, however. Descendants also confused him with my ancestor, Sherwood Strong, 3rd, son of Martin, 1st, and Ann (Stanley) Strong; this Sherwood married Mary Tibbs of Goochland Co., VA. Sherwood Strong, 2nd, apparently married in Georgia after 1794 to Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. But on Sherwood's 1820 census, two apparent sons reportedly born 1794 or earlier were enumerated, suggesting the possiblility he married in Buckingham County, VA, but continued to live on his father's property. Sherwood Strong died in Clarke County, GA, by SEP 1825, when his estate was being settled. Elizabeth Strong and her orphans received land grants in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. They relocated to Walton Co., GA, then to Coweta County, GA, where her will was proved 8 MAY 1845. >GENERATION 05: John Strong was born 24 FEB 1806 in Clarke Co., GA. He married Mary Ann Whatley of Newton Co., GA, on 9 JUL 1829. They settled in Rusk Co., Texas, after 1846 (birth of Samuel in GA) and prior to 1 JUN 1850, when the census was taken. The Strong Cemetery in Rusk Co., Texas, was apparently begun on his property as the John Strong family cemetery. John Strong was buried there after his death on 5 SEP 1854. >GENERATION 06: William Edward Strong was listed as Edward, age 9 years, on the 1850 census of his parents. He was thus born about 1841 in Georgia. Another account gives a birth date of 9 APR 1843 in Paulding Co., GA. A John Strong family appeared on the 1840 census of Paulding County, GA. Edward Strong's wife was Elmira Frances Bateman. On the 1870 census of Rusk County, TX, he was listed as William Strong with wife, Elmira, and two children. Edward Strong and family were enumerated on the 1880 census of Rusk County, Texas, Microfilm Page 111D, Dwelling 441, with five children, including Oscar Strong, age 5 years. Edward's mother, Mary, age 68, was also residing with him. >GENERATION 07: 7. Oscar Strong was born 14 NOV 1874 in Rusk County, Texas. In 1965 Social Security Number 457-88-4129 was issued in Texas. He died 15 AUG 1972, when he was residing in ZIP Code 75671 in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas. Write to the Social Security Administration to obtain a copy of his Social Security file. >BIBLIOGRAPHY: For more detail about this family consult the article "Sherwood Strong of Hanover County, Virginia, and Clarke County, Georgia" in the book Strong Family Histories, Volume V, published by the Strong Family Association of America (SFAA) in 1996. He had legally adult sons named John, Samuel, James, and Thomas, and an minor son, William Strong. They were probably residing with their mother, Mrs. Mary Strong, who was not found in this index, or with one of the siblings, James or John. A review of these census records should reveal if this is the case. In this index, one of the John Strongs, probably "Sr.", possibly James Strong, and Alexander S. Martin are probably the sons of Elizabeth Strong, consort of Alexander Martin. Elizabeth Strong reportedly resided with Alexander Martin till her death. A review of his census records should provide more data about her. Did Mrs. Mary Strong, the widow of the 1790 and 1800 census reports of Rockingham County, die before 1810 or did she perhaps relocate with one of her children? The Strongs who migrated to Russell / Scott County, VA, and from there to Kentucky, were likely her descendants. William Strong relocated by 1794. Samuel Strong relocated by 1796. Thomas Strong (2nd) relocated by 1806. I still question who was the husband of Mrs. Mary Strong and the father of her children. Jim Rolff presented a theory. What we need is proof of the theory. ============================================================== 1820 CENSUS Joel Strong Granville 024 John Strong Cumberland 192 John Strong Rockingham 596 Mary Strong Chowan 128 Robert Strong Rockingham 600 Samuel Strong Rockingham 590 Sneed Strong Rockingham 604 Zachariah Strong Rockingham 608 Alexander S. Key to the columns in the 1800 census report: Free White Males Conversion 00-09 years Born 1791-1800 10-15 years Born 1785-1790 16-25 years Born 1775-1784 26-44 years Born 1756-1774 45 years of more Born 1755 or earlier Free White Females 00-09 years 10-15 years 16-25 years 26-44 years 45 years of more Other Free Persons Slaves All tabulations below should be verified by reading the microfilm copy. HEAD OF MALES--FEMALES-- HOUSEHOLD COUNTY, PAGE OTHER--SLAVES Elizabeth Strong Rockingham, P. 458 00001--01000--0--0 James Strong Rochingham, P. 463 20010--10010--0--0 James Strong Stokes, P. 608 01201--01101--0--2 John Strong Rockingham, P. 475 00121--00001--0--0 Mary Strong Rockingham, P. 475 12010--01111--0--0 Sneed Strong Rockingham, P. 476 10010--12010--0--0 Thomas Strong Rockingham, P. 488 10010--10100--0--0 Alexander Martin Rockingham, P. 457 00201--01001--0--9 COMMENTS: If Elizabeth Strong was residing with Alexander Martin in 1800, then who is the Elizabeth Strong enumerated on Page 458? The Elizabeth Strong on Page 458 appears to be a legal minor, age 10-15, with a male age 45 or over in her household. Was she a young widow? If so, who was her husband? This census record, in particular, needs to be verified from the microfilm of the original. If Elizabeth Strong was residing in the Alexander Martin household in 1800, then Elizabeth Strong was born 1755 or earlier. In this household are two males (sons?) age 16-25 years [probably John Strong and Alexander Strong] and a female age 10-15 years [probably John's wife, as Elizabeth had given John household furniture and livestock a couple years earlier]. Could the younger James Strong, who was residing in Rockingham County, born 1774 or earlier, be the third son of Elizabeth Strong, as suggested by the 1790 census of the household of Gov. Alexander Martin? The James Strong in neighboring Stokes County is the right age to have been a son of William Strong, Sr. Deeds indicated he probably owned land on both sides of the county line between Rockingham and Stokes Counties. Mary Strong appears to have a married couple with children residing with her in 1800, as she is not likely the mother of the boy who is less than 10 years of age, since Mary appeared to be widowed by 1790. The 1800 census shows Mary Strong, also, to have been born by 1755. The elder James Strong reportedly had a wife named Mary. Mary, wife of James Strong, the elder, was living in 1800. She, too, was born 1755 or earlier. In 1800, the younger of the two James Strongs apparently had two sons and a daughter under the age of 10 years, that is, born in the 1790s. ============================================================ SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION: __________ Rockingham County, NC, Deed Book B, Page 28; dated 3 FEB 1788, recorded 23 FEB 1799. James Pratt of Rockingham County conveyed 50 acres land to Elizabeth Strong, of Rockingham County, for 40 pounds. This land was adjacent Turbefield Barnes' line and William Pratt's line. The deed was witnessed by John Strong and James Holderness. __________ The witness was possibly John Strong, the son of Elizabeth Strong. At issue is: Was John Strong, son of Elizabeth, a legal adult, age 21 years or over, by 1788? If so, he was born 1767 or earlier. That's not necessarily inconsistent with Elizabeth having been born in 1755 or earlier, per the 1800 census, but a birth for Elizabeth by 1750 or earlier would fit better. Elizabeth's earliest discovered legal record was dated 1783 and she appeared to be a head of household at that time and possibly widowed. In 1783 she purchased land on Fisher's Creek, then in Guilford County but subsequently in Rockingham County. James Holderness was also a witness to that transaction. Elizabeth sold this land in 1787. I fully support Francie Lane's <[email protected]> conclusion that the following deed pertains to John Strong [Jr.], son of Elizabeth Strong, rather than to John Strong, Sr. [1734-1811], son of William Strong, Sr. The elder John Strong owned land on Buffalo Island Creek in Rockingham County. __________ Rockingham Co., NC, Deed Book __, Page __, dated 20 JAN 1794, as reported in James R. Rolff's 1983 book, page 50. William Fields conveyed 50 acres located on Sharps Creek of the Dan River to John Strong for 50 pounds. The land was adjacent lands owned by Turbefield Barnes, and Thomas Henderson. Witnesses were Joshua Smith, William Smith, and John Smith. __________ Rockingham Co., NC, Deed Book O, Page 359, dated 23 MAY 1812. Recorded May, 1812. Elizabeth Strong to John Strong, both of Rockingham Co., NC, 50 acres, adjacent to Turbefield Barnes and William Pratt. Witnesses: Alexander S. Martin [nee Strong], Cornelius Mabry. Proved by Alexander S. Martin. __________ ============================================================== To be continued in Part III: 1810 through 1850 census, index only. "BoB T." Robert T. 3. =============================================================== The following data were abstracted from the Index to Heads of Households, First Federal Census of the U. S., 1790, as published on Compact Disks by Banner Blue Division, Broderbund Software (the publishers of Family Tree Maker genealogy database software). The categories on this census were: Free White Males age 16 years or more Free White Males age less than 16 years [that is, 0 through 15 years] Free White Females [of any age] Other Free Persons (e.g., American Indians) [of any age] Slaves [of any age] The last two caterories are omitted below, since there were none in any of the Strong households listed below or in Gov. Alexander's Martin's household. The following tabulations should be independently verified by reading the census from microfilm. NAME OF HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD NC COUNTY PAGE CENSUS David Strong New Hanover 193 01-01-06 John Strong Richmond 045 01-01-02 John Strong Rockingham 168 03-00-03 Lewis Strong Anson 036 01-01-01 Peter Strong Cumberland 041 02-01-00 Sneed Strong Rockingham 169 01-00-04 James Strange Rockingham 168 01-02-05 Gov. Alexander Martin Rockingham 169 03-01-02 COMMENTS: Neither Mary Strong nor Elizabeth Strong were indexed. Other published indices should be checked for Mary Strong and/or the census should be read from micorfilm in search of her record. The following enumeration of the Mary Strong household has been purported, with no citation for the census page. Mary Strong Rockingham ??? 01-04-06 This enumeration suggests one son born 1774 or earlier, four sons born 1775-1790, and five daughters of unknown ages. It has also been alleged that Elizabeth Strong and sons were residing with Gov. Alexander Martin at his Danbury Plantation in Rockingham Co. in 1790. If that is true, then she appears to have had three sons, one of whom is not positively identified, but reported by some historians of this family to have been a James Strong. This census would indicate one son (John Strong?) was born before 1774 (when Thomas Strong of Pittsylvania County, VA, was still alive). At that time, Alexander Martin was apparently residing in Rowan County, NC, per a message posted by Francie Lane, a descendant and researcher of the Alexander Strong, aka, Alexander Strong Martin. Could Elizabeth Strong have been from Rowan County or vicinity and could she have relocated to Guilford / Rockingham Co., NC, with Alexander Martin? To my knowledge, no one has searched the records of Rowan County circa 1770 or earlier for Strongs. On several instances I have pointed out that there appeared to be more Strongs in Rockingham County than could be ascribed as children, and/or spouses of children, of William Strong, Sr., whose last known record was in 1770 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. The 1790 census highlights the fact there were other Strong families residing in North Carolina with no known connection to William Strong, Sr. A message I received this date suggests there were Strongs residing in Chowan County, or vicinity, prior to 1700, for example. Could some of these other, unrelated Strong families have moved into Guilford / Rockingham County, also? The John Strong residing in Richmond County in 1790 is familiar to The Strong Mail List as "Captain" John Strong, later of Copiah County, Mississippi. Peter Strong of Cumberland County, NC, I believe, was a descendant of "Elder" John Strong of Massachusetts. I do not recognize David Strong of New Hanover County or Lewis Strong of Anson County. A person named David T. Strong appears in early records of East Tennessee but I have not been able to trace either his ancestry or his descendants. To be continued in Part II: 1800 Census. "BoB T."
