    2. Lindsey DiCosola
    3. Most of what I have on Walter comes from the SFAA Update Volume on the John Jr. (or should I say 3rd?) line. Josiah> John> Reuben> Walter b. 19 Sep 1770 in Thetford VT. The book says his wife was named Elsa - surname unk. My notes say her name was Lucy and that the LDS have her as Lucy but I have not personally checked that out. Still no surname. I have Walters children as Reuben b. 12 Dec 1791 Roxa b. 31 Aug 1793 Polly b. 27 Aug 1794 Harriet b. 13 Feb 1796 Ezra Brewster b. 25 Mar 1798 Amos b. 11 Jun 1799 Naomi b. 10 Jun 1801 David b. 11 Mar 1806 Abigail b. 23 Jun 1809 along with some handwritten notes questioning the last 4. I do not know why. I have that Walter died in Lima, Ontario County NY which is just South of Rochester. I looked it up on the map and I'm tring to figure out why THERE?And now I wonder about possible connections to Strongs in Rochester. I did not think we were closely related. I am also KICKING myself for not paying closer attention because I drove very close to their over the summer and I should have stopped. Son Ezra Brewster got married way over in Warren co which is near Lake George. Then he came back west and settled near Freedom twnship. I have a theory about son David. There is record in Illinois of an early settler named David Strong who came from VT and would have been the right age but I don't have much of anything to go on with this. If you know anything else about this David, I would LOVE to hear it. Keep in touch. Lindsey

    3. Martha, I am the one who descends from Walter Strong of Thetford VT. His son, Ezra Brewster Strong > Jacob Lane Strong> Osee James Strong> Burton Evan Strong> Leonard Burton Strong> Leonard B. Jr. > and me! I am still looking for better information regarding Walter's wife. Honestly, anything anyone knows about ANY of this line would be welcomed information. Back near the beginning of the year, there were a couple of other people looking into Walter and Ezra but I don't recall specific questions. THANK YOU, Martha, for all the work you've done for ALL of us on the list. You're the BEST! Lindsey DiCosola [email protected]

    1. William A. Strong
    2. R. A. Strong
    3. Hello Martha, Thanks for the reply concerning William Augustus Strong. If you have any suggestions, I will greatly appreciate it and will follow up. I did some of the editing for the material in Vol V of the Strong update. The bulk of the work was done by my cousin, Alice May Smith and of course Bob Strong, who did a great job of editing the whole volume. Through a misunderstanding as to the release date, I did not get some final inputs in to the volume. Known facts about my William Augustus Strong. 1. He died at Black Rock, NY (near Buffalo) in the service of the Army. His military records indicate that he was born in Durham, CT. This was also confirmed by a letter by his grandson. He died in November 1814 at the age of 31 putting his birth ca 1783. 2. Per Fowler's "History of Durham, CT" he was sworn as a freeman in 1803. A Russell Strong was also in this list. 3. He married Abigail Crane ca 1802 in Durham, CT. She is from a large family who are well documented in a Crane genealogy by E. B. Crane. She had been an orphan, and had been provided a guardian, John Camp. (Her mother was a Camp.) 4. Abigail inherited property. Between William and Abigail, they accumulated several pieces of property in Durham, CT. They sold off this property over a short period of time and moved to Atwater, OH ca 1806. According to papers by his grandson, he built the first frame house in Atwater, OH a couple of years after the first road was cut through from Canfield, OH. A daughter, Maria was an early burial in an old cemetery in Atwater. 5. Abigail left Atwater and returned to Durham, CT ca 1810 leaving William and sons Alonzo and Luzerne in Atwater. William traveled to Durham, CT to persuade Abigail to return, but failed. He then married Julia Huton ca 1812. Ira b. 1813 was their son. 6. William probably entered the service just after the British raided Sundusky and parts of Western Ohio. He then enlisted for the duration in the Spring of 1814 and died in Black Rock, NY November 1814. 7. Alonzo and Luzerne returned to CT for a few years and then Alonzo was indentured to Joseph Hartzell at North Benton, OH. We have not found out who kept Alonzo in Durham. 8. Abigail was buried in lot 870 in the Old Durham Cemetery. The tombstone inscription: Mrs. Abigail, wife of William A. strong, who d. 9/29/1814 in her 31th yr. At her feet lies their infant daughter. [The infant daughter is a mystery. It is possible that the daughter was born before the move to OH, and they later shared a common grave.] 9. [not identified in Dwight] All of the Strongs buried in this series of lots except Abigail and Cyrene can be identified in Dwight and are decedents in the Thomas line. So........ if anyone has ideas for finding parents for William Augustus, I will be extremely grateful. My cousin Alice May Goodridge has worked many years without turning up a solid lead. I have spent several years also. Thanks for the interest in my problem. Ralph Strong.

What do you have on Walter and Ezra? Martha

    1. (no subject)
    2. Hi all, I have to work out some sort of system to do these lookups. The SFAA has all the information on the SFAA computer which Bob Sheldon Strong has and he can use search with that, but knowing computers it wants everything exact. Alot of times it takes looking in the books. The Update books are easier but they begin with where Dwight left off. The time period that most of you are lost at and the places where you are lost can cause a real problems Take my line for instance the one the Dwight got was Israel and a birhtdate. No mention of Vermont, wife or children. Thanks to alot of people doing research in Vermont I was able to pick him up there. And alot of that was luck on the maternal side of the family. I have got to finish the four generation, I am up to Mary. In between I have been reading Dwight with the help of an Index of all the 7 books, that Bob Sheldon Strong and Lyle Strong did, but can you imagine in seven books how many Johns and Williams there are. I am beginning to love middle names. Stick with the mailing list because it takes time and at first I didn't write down the email addresses of those that were searching, I just wrote the Ancester. I am now starting a log book. Bob not only does lookups for us but for anyone that sends mail to him so he is kept very busy. We will do our best. Dwight Volumes. Please also realize that Dwight did a wonderful job for the time period but he made some major mistakes. Some children even early on were forgotten, some are misplaced Some wives are wrong, some dates are wrong. The update program corrected alot of these but those we didn't hear from we couldn't correct and it is an ongoing process. Also realize the book was published in 1871, that is the cut off period for Dwight. Dwight also relied alot on family members answering his letters if they didn't he put in what he knew but couldn't go any further. Sometimes it was later generations that answered the letters and if someone moved away they didn't know about them and were left out. Don't get frustrated the answers are there somewhere it just takes alot of time and Alot of patience. In the meantime we will all keep looking. I will let the mailing list know when I find something and of course the person who made the inquiry. I will also post the new information on the Four Generation section of the SFAA page if it is the fifth and sixth generation which it usually is. I will be adding Dwights page number to each line of the four generations and will continue to try and place links for those of you who are double or triple descent. There are alot of those. Martha

    1. Valentine STRONG (and John STRONG) and Samuel B. Stroong
    2. Thought this might be a good time to reintroduce my Valentine STRONG (and brother John). My Valentine STRONG was born Sussex County, NJ 1821. His father, Samuel B. STRONG, b. NY about 1795, Valentine's mother-Catherine Swinn. I have been looking for years for the parent's of Samuel or anything about Catherine. Samuel appears in the Hillsdale, MI 1850 census with (wife) Mary and Children (I assume STRONG's) Hirem-19, Emily-17, Martha-15 and Claire(or Clarisa)-15. All these children were born in NY. We also have a letter written by Samuel from Somerset, Hillsdale, MI in 1845 to son, Valentine, then in Paterson, NJ. In this letter he mentions a son, John. He speaks of the price of sand and that the mason business is good. I have information regarding Valentine and his family (wife-Jane Van Buskirk) but have been unable to find anything else about Samuel B. STRONG. Any information would be greatly appreciated. 3. Thanks so much Martha. I have been working about a year on my Strong family. Whether or not it's true the original story was my John Strong came from Ireland and was lost at sea in 1800. In searching through any records I could find in NJ, I found John's name in Court records for money owed, between 1801-1807 which verifies that he was lost. He had 4 small (Mary, Samuel (b. 1797), William, Susan) children with his wife Ruhama Beaman. As I continued my search I was able to find Samuel and William moving to Orleans County, NY along with their mother Ruhama. What I found possibly suspicious was Samuel was right next to Lewis Genung (Margaret D. Strong's husband). Lewis moved first to Orleans, Samuel moved a few years later. I don't know if there is a connection between Margaret and Samuel, but one thing. The story from my great great grandmother was that John's mother was a Margaret (no last name listed), rich and from Ireland. But I have found Lady Margaret in my line in the same timeframe on a different line (Ingalls) which makes it possible that John may not be the one from Ireland and could be potentially from some other country. If this is the case, there is a possibility that John may be related to your line. Since his wife, Ruhama was about 30 in 1800, I would guess he may be in the same age group. I know that I have reached a roadblock with this family, as far searching all records from the LDS library microfilm that can be viewed at a Stake and in writing to all sources I can find in Morris County. So it will be interesting to see if maybe what was typed up from a written letter from my great great grandmother had somehow been transposed when typed (th ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Rambling
    2. James E. Gilbert
    3. [email protected] Cousins: I have been encouraged to write down my mine rambling. I will try it today. Some times I get to thinking about my ancestors and feel as if I know them as well as those who lived around them. I have been accused of living in the past more than the present. If we do not leave a record of what we have learned of our ancestors our grandchildren will never know from where they descend. I have been told by so many "I don't care where my grand parents come from"! I hope the next century is as informative as the last one was. On an earlier date I wrote about the letter to a Capt. David Scranton in Novia Scotia by Thomas Strong, Jr. (s/o Thomas Strong and Phebe Seward) in July 1792. In that note I stated that the reference to the great sea could have been Lake Erie, but after more investigation I think it is refereeing to Lake Ontario. This route would have been along one used later for the Erie Canal. History has it that this route is along the present route of Interstate 90. It could have placed the Nathan (younger brother of Thomas, Jr.) of the letter at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. If he moved north he would have come to the area of Adams, Rodman, and Watertown. This is the area Nathan settled in with his family. We have found Thomas his Father in the 1800 census of Oneida Co., NY. Listed on page 181, 1 female 10 but less than 16 and 2 males 10 but less than 16 in his household. At present I do not know the names of these children. It could be Nathan and Eunuch's children. We do know when the letter above was writing Eunice and one of their children were with Thomas, Jr. We also know in March 1810 Nathan moved to Rodman, Jefferson Co., NY from Whitestown, Onieda Co., NY. See Martha Place on the Internet the URL is as follows; http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/7905/ then click on four Generation. You will find this under #121 Thomas child K. Hon. Nathan Strong. I need to look at the 1820 census of NY. I have a question for Lindsey DiCosola [email protected] Can you make a connection as to which one of the female children of Thomas Strong and Phebe Seward (Thomas, Lt. Eliakim, Thomas, Jr., Thomas, John Strong, John Stronge, George Stronge) married the Scranton and move to Novia Scotia, Canada? See Dwight's note on Martha's four generations. Martha do you still think Lois Strong daughter of Thomas and Phebe married a Cole. I found Coles in 1810 census in Jefferson Co. But did not think them of importance at the time. I'll go back and get more detail notes on them. Some where in the Jefferson Co., NY records I read this summer their daughter Eunice Strong married Simeon Coe (COLE). He had the title of deacon. 1. STRANGE - William Copeland 1805 - 1875 - England
    2. Mike
    3. Hello one and all - this is my first visit to this mailing group and I wonder if you might be able to help - so the story so far: I am trying to find out more about a William Copeland STRANGE and his immediate family. He was born in 1805 (probably Henley-on-Thames as he was baptised there on 10th January 1806 from Parish Records) and died 3rd October 1875 in Henley (certificated). He was a builder and later an architect and surveyor (Post Office and Lock's Directories 1869 and 1870). He resided in Henley at New Street, now No 52 (1841 census) , Hart Street (1851 census), and is listed as having a Pew Faculty (No 37) in 1834/5 and as paying Henley Rentals 1836/42, He was in London, Holborn 10 Harpur Street, (marriage certificate 22nd November 1860 at St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Holborn and 1861 census). He was back to Henley at least by 1867 and was living on Gravel Hill (birth certificates of a son 15th January 1867 - Arthur and from Directories 1869 and 1870), 55b Bell Street (1871 census) and we also believe No 6 Market Place but have no evidence other than Market Street recorded on one of his son's birth certificates (James - 13th December 1873). We have further details of his marriage (certificated) to Elizabeth POCOCK in 1860 and the names his father (John Strange - builder) her father (William Pocock, carpenter) and of the witnesses (Edward Goodall STRANGE - confirmed to be a brother - and Esther Ann POCOCK - relationship to Elizabeth not known). This was William's second marriage (he was 54 and she was 26!) - the marriage took place in St George the Martyr Church, Holborn but we don't know exactly when he left London other than he was resident at No 10 Harpur Street (an apartment house and still standing and in similar use). When he arrived in London (and in the 1861 census) he was a builder but later (1869) he became a surveyor and architect. Did he have any formal training, was this why he was in London, or did he just develop his skills and then adopted the title? William, was recorded in the 1841 Census Return with his first wife Sarah (maiden name not known), she aged 40 and Charlotte BOND servant aged 13. In the 1851 Census Sarah is identified as coming from Worcestershire (we believe the town to be Pershore) with his nephew Harry COWELL aged 19 and servant Adelaide FREE aged 18. In the 1881 census his widow (Elizabeth) was in the Union Workhouse with a number of her brood, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Gertrude, Fanny and James (he was my great grandfather). We want to find out more about: William's siblings and his father John (I have lots of names but will make this the subject of another posting later), His first wife Sarah, her maiden name and her background, His career development and some of the work he did, Elizabeth and all their offspring, only James and Arthur known about. The following outline my strike a cord with someone, the last two names are not substantiated as existing and are doubted: 1. William b 1862 m 1896 SMALL Mary Ann > London a. Frank b 1898, d 1950, m Eva > Sevenoaks, dsp b. William b 1899, m Mary i. William b 1920, m ? > Aldershot 2. John b 1864 3. Arthur b 15 Jan 1867 m 15 Jam 1867 NEWSHAM Mary Jane > Lancashire a. etc - line known 4. Elizabeth bap 9 Sep 1868, Henley (Parish records) 5. Mary Ann bap 6 Sep 1868, Henley (Parish records) 6. Fanny (Frances?) b 1870, > Reading? 7. Gertrude b 1870 > Egham? 8. James b 1873, d 1955, m 1897 SMALL Ellen (Mary Ann's sister) a - etc = line known 9. Frederick? 10. Caroline?> Orpington? Well I guess that's enough for now - I guess it's a lot more than many ever get on their great-great-grandad. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Mike Strange - 141 Potton Road, Biggleswade, Beds SG18 0ED Tel - 01767-315075 [email protected] Studying STRANGE - Henley, POCOCK - Pangbourne and COPELAND <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

    3. I found a Margaret D. Strong married to a Lewis Genung in Morris County, NJ. Does Margaret belong to anyone out there? It appears Margaret (b. 1794, d.March 1, 1872) married Lewis Genung (b. Oct. 30, 1793, d. November 24, 1833) in Morris County in 1815. They moved to S. Barre twnp, Orleans County, New York where they bought 100 acres of land, built a blacksmith shop and sold stationary threshing machines. There were 2 known children of Margaret and Lewis Genung 1) Mary Ann Genung (b. 1822) 2) Lewis Genung (b. 1828) married Mary J. and had children: Lizzie A. (b. 1861) Carl D. (b. 1866) Clara C. (b. 1866) Mary E. (b. 1870) I sent this message twice before last week but it appears it didn't get through. 1. Re: Valentine STRONG (and John STRONG)
    2. DBS &/or MD
    3. Hi Meg! Your message about Valentine Strong is indeed interesting. I also note Martha's message about a Valentine Strong. I think there are several points of interest to be explored: First, I think Martha will come up with an English connection for her Valentine Strong.... I also think BoB Strong sent out a message sometime ago about the English connections of a Valentine Strong. All that is important, because believe the Irish County Waterford Strongs, mentioned below, can be traced to the English Strongs Martha and BoB have pointed up before.... detailing that link is somewhere down my list of priorities, and I would be very happy to give my data and info to someone who is interested in persuing it further. Second, noting the Valentine Strong you have found is "a native Irish", the name is listed in my Ireland Database under numbers 141/2, 142/3, 1092/3, and 1093/4. (Note, the numbers are "slashed" because the same record shows up 'one digit off' in two differing versions of the database). In the first two records, Valentine Strong, son of Edward and Margaret Strong of the townland of Kill, Parish of St. Nicholas, Diocese of Cork, Baroney of Gaultier, County of Waterford, Ireland, is being christened; first on Sep 14 1740, and second on Jul 8, 1746. Obviously, the question is, is this the same Valentine in each case, or is the second a child named for a deceased first child?... another speculation is raised below.... In the second two records, Valentine Strong is listed as a passenger, aged 39, arriving in Virginia in either 1774 or 1775. The difference is in the accuracy of the two sources involved. Tepper, "Passengers to America", says 1774; Fothergill, "Emigrants from England, 1773-1776" says 1775. Another obvious question in all of this is whether the Valentine Strongs in my database are each the same person, and further, whether any of them are the Valentine Strong you have found. Yours is supposedly "about 20 years of age" in 1749. That would seem to make him too old to be the same Valentine Strong who was christened in 1740 or 1746.... However, could we build a HYPOTHESIS that he was really younger than 20 in 1746? It appears that your Valentine Strong was not very tall (not unusual in that era), but he could be younger than 20 based on that. Also, he appears to have been indentured first, to Alexander Cruikshanks in 1749, and second, to William Spear in 1750; before joining Sir william Pepperell's Regiment of Foot about 1755. He ran from all three of these ventures. Why? Was he a never-do-well, an incorrigible? Was this why he was christened twice in Ireland... disparing parents trying desperately to Christianize a little heathen? Was he sent to Pennsylvania as an indentured servant to try to "straighten him out"???? ALL OF THE ABOVE IS PURE SPECULATION!!!!! But, suppose further, your Valentine Strong traveled back to Ireland sometime after 1755... going with the hypothesis that he was ABOUT 20, and maybe 25, in 1749, he COULD have been 39 in 1774 or 1775.... and he COULD have emigrated to Virginia from ENGLAND as that might have been his immediate country of departure even tho he was originally from Ireland... AGAIN THIS IS PURE SPECULATION!!! Sometime ago we had a correspondant on the STRONG-List who was looking for a Valentine Strong in Pennsylvania. I don't think she subscribes any longer. I just checked thru my files and can't come up with the right name or email address for her. I suspect she might be very interested in all this material.... If anyone else can remember her name or address, hopefully this info can be forwarded to her. Good Work, Meg!!! I will add your info re the Irish Valentine Strong of Pennsylvania to my Irish data base. Thanks for the help! Regards, David B. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. WIFE NOTES: Martha Mary BOND CHILD NOTES: Thomas Jr.. STRONG General: !Thomas is on the 1850 Census on page 210 in Grant Co, WI. Also listed were his wife, Mary, and eight children. A biographical record is given on pages 701-702 in "Commemorative Biographical Record" of Grant Co. He spent about three years in TN prior to coming to WI, where he followed mining and farming. On the 1842 Census of the Eastern Division of Grant Co, WI, there is a Thomas Strong listed as having a spouse and 6 males and 4 females. I am not sure how they counted them or if there may have been other children not found on later censuses. At that point, there should have been only 5 children, not 10 as the census may seem to suggest. Earlier, in the 1836 Census for Iowa County (the boundaries kept changing) it appears that he probably was living there with seven other individuals. Since his daughter Mary was indicated on the Censuses as having been born in WI in 1835, it is probably safe to assume the Thomas Strong on the 1836 Census and the Thomas Strong on the 1842 Census are this Thomas Strong.
