    1. William Augustus Strong
    2. R. A. Strong
    3. Dear Martha, Again, thanks for the interest. 1. We have the following for William's War record: Rank: Rect. or Prvt. Regiment: 19th US Height: 5 ft 8 1/2 in Age: 31 Were Born: Durham, CT Middlesex Enlistment: When: may 10 14 (1814) Where: Harpersfield, OH Period: War Remarks: R.R. June 1814. Died Nov 30 in Lt. C. A Trimbles Co. See P.I. 26727. Among the Bounty Land correspondence is the following letter: Treasury Department []Auditor's Office May 2, 1832 The name of William A Strong a private is found a Muster Roll of Captain A Coxander (sp?) 19th Inf. to [] 12 July 1814 in the account of Pay Master [] vo G2, to have enlisted [] 10 May 1814 or the War. His name is next found on a Roll of Lt. C A. Trimble's Company from 1 August to 31 October 1814, noted Fort Erie Sick...see the account of Pay Master Young voucher 28, where he is stated to have "died 30 November 1814" Bounty Land Office [brackets are items I can't interpret] I don't think I have the "pension record" Perhaps that is something I can chase down at Archives. I have thought about William being illegitimate. One of the problems I have is that he acquired a lot of property in Durham when he was quite young. Abigail inherited some, but when he moved to Ohio, he sold off 4 or 5 properties, including that which Abigail inherited. So, he must have inherited money or property when he was around 20 years old. Also, he was sworn as a "Freeman" ca 1803/4. From the Ct. Genealogy monthly magazine, I found that one was supposed to be Christian and of good Character for this privilege. Are there any historians out there that know exactly what was required in this era for a "Freeman"? He had money and resources to build a house as soon as he arrived in Atwater. I've seen some comments that indicate that when people came from Connecticut, they built a house. When they came from Pennsylvania, they first built a barn!! As to the date when Abigail returned to Durham, CT, we think that Luzerne was b. ca 1810. According to a letter by one of Alonzo's sons, Luzerne was nursing when Abigail left! If I can pin down Luzerne's birthday more closely, that would help. Another thought that we had was that it was possible that the infant eliza died before the move to Ohio, and that the grave was re-opened to inter Abigail when she died. Now that you have pointed out the sequence of burials, this seems unlikely. Your scenario seems better, that Eliza was born after she returned to Durham. It is unlikely that she was pregnant when when left Ohio, as Luzerne was still nursing at that time. So....William and Abigail must have spent some "quality time" together when he visited Durham to persuade her to return to the frontier. According to a letter written by Alonzo, Meriah Hall's mother, who was a widow kicked Luzerne out for drunkenness and abusiveness. He later was in Ohio, and took a settlement for the bounty land in IL. They had lost track of each other by the time Alonzo released the deed. I had rejected Medad as the father we are seeking, but don't know why. Perhaps it is just because of too much faith in Dwight, that the data were accurate for a family as prominent as Medad's. Your theory is extremely interesting, an I will follow it up. It's too late tonight to dig out Dwight, but I wonder if there are any family members that would account for an inheritance for William ca 1802 or 1803 that would allow him to acquire property. Thanks a lot for the suggestions and the theories. You have given me lots to work on. Regards, Ralph

    1. William Augustus Strong
    2. Dear Ralph, I was working on William last night. William b. 1783, d. Nov. 1814 m1 Abigail Crane b. 1783, d. Sep. 1814 Durham, CT, (grave. #870) m2 Julia Huton, c1812 Children - just the ones that we are concerned with: Alonzo, b. 1805, Luzerne b. 1810, m. in Wallingford, CT. Eliza Infant dau. bur. Sep. 1814 (grave #870 with mother) Ira b. 1813 ( Do you have a definate date of birth ?) b. Capt. Medad Strong, b. Jul. 4, 1753, d. a. 1816, m. Feb. 9, 1775, Hannah Kelsey, d, a. 1817. A farmer at Durham, CT. He was also a teacher of music and a district school teacher in the winter. [Dwight Vol. I p. 240] Children i. Anson Strong, b. Jun. 27, 1778, d. Jan. 1848, m. Feb. 6, 1803, Sally Butler of Brandford, CT., b. Jan. 8, 1799, d/o John Butler and Elizabeth Lindley. He was a farmer in Durham, NY. [Dwight Vol. I, p. 240] ii. prob. Eliakim. E. Strong, b. 1794, d. Jan 4, 1814, Durham, CT. (grave #871) ii. Sally Strong, d. Feb. 17, 1797, age 18, Durham, ( grave #869) [Not in Dwight] iii. Nathan Lewis Strong, b. Miss Shelly of Durham, CT, m. Miss Shelley of Durham, CT. iv. Ellsworth Strong, b. a shoe dealer in Charleston, S.C. v. Electa Strong, d. unmarried in OH v. Hannah Strong, m. John Wolcott of Jewett, Green, NY, b. in Wallingford, CT. Children Julia Wolcott, m. Mr. Ward of Fitchville, Huron, OH. Alonzo age 7 and Luzerne age 4 go to CT. c. 1814 when father died. Alonzo b. 1805, returns to Ohio about age 12, c. 1817 Luzerne b. 1810 stays in Ct. age 7 marries in Wallingford, CT. Eliza b. aft 1810 ( prob. infant that died in Sep. 1814) I think your family story got confused and that Abigail left later than 1810 more like 1812 and took Elizabeth with her or she was pregnant when she left. When both parents died the boys were sent home to CT., The people in Ohio may not have known that Abigail was dead and believed they were sending the boys to their mother. I believe they went to their grandparents. The only one that fits your family story is Medad and Hannah. The boys lived with Medad and Hannah until Hannah's death in 1817 when Alonzo goes back to Ohio at age 12. Luzerne stays in CT. and later marries in Wallingford. He probably lived with his Aunt Hannah and her husband John Wolcott who had family ties in Wallingford thus Luzerne meets his wife. Alonzo names a daughter Julia not after his stepmother but after his cousin Julia Wolcott, dau. of Hannah Strong Wolcott who later moves to Fitchville, Ohio. Medad had an unknown child Sally who d. in 1797 grave #869 Abigail Crane, was bur. 1814 grave #870. Notice the discrepancy between the burial dates. Others of this family died in between those dates but no one was buried there, I think the graves were originally planned for Medad and Hannah but were used for Sally and Abigail. Do you know more about Ira? What is the date of Sandusky Attack? You and Alice are going to have a great family story to tell when this is all done. Martha

    3. Dear Martha et. al., In response to your question about William's divorce, there was none. Some correspondence explains that the time and expense of another trip back to Connecticut was too much, and he had two children to care for, Alonzo and Luzerne. One letter notes that Luzerne was still nursing when Abigail was given a horse and some money so she could leave the wilderness and return to Durham, CT. There was discussion of this relating to establishing a valid deed for the sale of property in Illinois. Ira, the son of William and his second "wife" was given a share, although it was not legally necessary because of the questionable status of the marriage. The property in question was obtained as the result of William's service during the War of 1812. Alonzo, William's son sold it to Alvan Smith and Louvisa, one of his daughters. The Illinois part of the family at one time refused to accept Abigail as a relative because she deserted her family! So.....You have quickly uncovered the skeleton in our closet!!! Best regards and thanks for the assist. I haven't got to look for Sgt John Strong as a possible family connection, but will do so as soon as I can. Ralph Strong

    1. Re: William Augustus Strong
    2. Dear Ralph. I think part of your problem is that the family in Durham was none to pleased with poor William and that is why is he is not in Dwights. Abigail seems to have been accepted back into the family in Connecticut. William Augustus has to belong to this family. Don't forget Medad. It really looks like that is where she was staying and where the boys went. It would make sense that after he and his wife died things would change. Martha

    3. Jim; First, thanx for the help in IL. I read that David and his wife lived in Elk Grove which is Cook County now but I don't think it was in 1830s. Look forward to hearing from you. As for the daughters of Thomas Strong and Phoebe Seward - I did not find anything yet showing marriages to Scranton brothers but I did narrow down the list. Sarah and Phebe d. unmarried so it was't them. Eunice m. Simeon Coe, so it wasn't her. That leaves Lois b. 1750, Loraine b. 1757, Catharine b. 1759 and Lucy b. 1764. If anyone out there can provide further on these 4, perhaps we can narrow it down even more. I will try to peruse "Early Connecticut Marriages" again this weekend and see if the Scranton boys are mentioned in or around Durham. Happy Halloween Everyone! Lindsey
