1. Re: William and Mary STRONG from Co. CORK

    3. Attention: Pam Thompson, Cherry Strong Hicks, Judy Shinn Kunz, Muriel Millwood: I just saw the message from Pam, and have cut and pasted the following entries from my Lineages Directory... It appears you all have something in common, researching CORK! And, don't overlook the definite possibility that name variants are involved here! Note, also, possible relationships between Strongs of the four counties listed below. Hopefully you will be able to coordinate your research! Just yesterday, I revised the Research chapter of my manuscript. I suggest you visit the page and check out the parishes, etc in Co. Cork where Strongs have been found, and then visit a FHC to see if there are any parish records available... Frankly, I have never had the time to do it, and would appreciate the help... I am departing Monday, for about a month, but will monitor my email and hope to see some further developments in the research. Hope you will all correspond on line, via the Rootsweb Strong-List! When I return, perhaps I will be able to help a bit more with info in my paper files. I have shared some thoughts on research with Judy Shinn Kunz which she may be able to pass along in my absence. Just a parting thought.... be wary of this "from Cork" business. Although there ARE records of Strongs in Co. Cork, I suspect that some Strong merely sailed from Cork... See the discussion on the linked site re Cork on my Links page! Good Luck! David B. This info appears in an appendix about John Strong of Cumberland County, Kentucky. The article entitled "John Strong of Albany, KY" is found on Pages 1534-1535. Quoted is the first paragraph about John, together with certain updated information about his three children. "John, Michael and William Strong, brothers, were involved in the Emmet rebellion in 1798 in Ireland. When that collapsed the three brothers escaped secretly and landed in 1799, in Philadelphia, and after tarrying in that city for a few months they separated from each other, and John Strong never afterwards heard either from them or of them. He located at last in Cumberland, Clinton Co., Ky. [sic], on a farm near what is now Albany. In 1808, he married Elizabeth Williams. He died in 1820, and she married a second husband (name not given) who was living in 1868 in Woodson, Illinois. He had three children: I. Rev. William Hardin Strong. II. Prince Alfred Strong. III. Jane Strong."
I. Rev. William Hardin Strong. Born 26 AUG 1809. Campellite [Disciples of Christ] preacher. Married 1832, Josephine Dawson of Danville, Kentucky. Resided in Winchester, Illinois; Morgan County, Illinois; and Girard, Illinois. Apparently living in 1871 when Dwight published his genealogy. 10 children named. II. Prince Alfred Strong. Born 1811, Cumberland, KY; died 18?? in Spokane, WA. Married Frances Renfro at Lexington, Kentucky in 1838. Relocated to Illinois in 1838 and subsequently to California via the Isthmus of Panama and vessel "Nevada" to San Francisco, arriving June 17,1867. Migrated in 1879 to Five Mile Prairie, near Spokane, WA in 1879. Had nine children: Martha Francis, Martha Ann, Mary Elizabeth, Mary B., Prince Jerome, Laura, William Alfred, Prince William Jerome, and John Franklin Strong (the last being the ancestor of researcher Judy Shinn Kunz below). III. Jane Strong married Harvey Burnett of Lancaster, Kentucky. Moved to Alton, Illinois in 1842. She died there in 1848 or 1849. Seven children named.
Note(1) Thomas Addis Emmet (1764-1827): born in Cork; educated at Trinity College, Dublin... called to the Irish Bar, 1790; arrested, 1798 (during the "Rising of 98", when widespread rebellion broke out in Ireland in coordination with an abortive French invasion); exiled, 1799; attempted to interest Napoleon in a renewed invasion of Ireland, 1802; sailed for New York, 1804... (from a foot note at page 265, "Modern Ireland, 1600-1972", by R.F. Foster)
Note (2): It appears that Clinton County was probably formed out of Cumberland County after 1820. Albany in 1871 was in Clinton County and still is. Albany is near the Tennessee State line, north of Overton Co., TN. Clinton County, KY, is east of Monroe and Cumberland Counties, KY.
Note (3): The validity of the story about the three immigrant brothers cannot at this point be verified, but there may be passenger lists or other records that will verify the story. 3. Martha; I found the piece of paper from grandfather's closet which reads: (John found this in Buffalo - no dates) In Mormon church records-- Walter and Lucy Strong are the parents of Polly Strong, Thetford VT b 8/27/1794 Harriet Strong " " b 2/13/1796 Ezra Brewster Strong Thetford VT b. 3/25/1798 Hofak Strong " " b 10/16/1801, died 1903 Ezra, Harriet and Polly were baptized July 19, 1801 Ashael Strong, baptized in 1801 - November 15 Joseph Chapel Strong 1804 The above is transcribed exactly as it appears on the paper but I cannot swear that it was copied exactly from it's original source. The "John" mentioned would be my grandfather's brother - Uncle Jack - who has been dead since 1980. Buffalo would be Buffalo NY - where we all lived until the 1960's but I can't be sure whether Uncle Jack found the records at an LDS church in Buffalo or if he just found some stuff in Buffalo that made reference to LDS records. Martha, have you seen any OTHER references to Hofak, Ashael or Joseph? Regards, Lindsey

    3. I have finally gotten through all seven volumes of Early Connecticut Marriages (has to be done AT the library) and found no marriages between Scrantons and Strongs. In fact, there were very few references to Scrantons at all - which surprised me. Sorry. Wish I had something more for you. Lindsey DiCosola [email protected]

    3. ATTN: JIM GILBERT I've tried to email you a couple of times in the last week or 2 and messages were comming back as un-deliverable. I thought it was me and my poor typing skills and figured I would try again this week. Upon receiving your "Anyone out there???" I began to wonder if perhaps you are experiencing some kind of technical difficulty. Let us know. Lindsey DiCosola [email protected]

    2. Dear Jim, I am here. Things have been hectic. Wilma who just found her Lydia found out yesterday she is a double Strong. Juanita who is looking for Sarah Hampton found out she is a triple Strong. Kay and Virginia are working hard trying to find more out about John in NJ but it is looking good. Janet with your help found her Valentine in NJ but we are still looking for Samuel B. born in NY. Ralph is closer to finding William Augustus Strong and on the way we discovered that Abigail Crane is descended from Emma Strong Meigs of Chard. So he will be a double Strong from Chard. Lindsey is working with me on Walter Strong of Thetford and we are adding new information to that line. Jean sent me new information for the Mary line. Mike has found is Elanathan Strong and that is new information. I haven't found Sadie or Minerva yet but I'm still looking. If I forgot anyone I apologize. My Dwight volumes are getting a real workout. I am working on gettine the fourth generation of Sarah up. Jean Waters Strong has given me permission to post a land grant to her Elisha in VT and the conflict with NY. This is where many of us are having trouble. Usually in the fifth and sixth generation. I am posting the fifth and sixth generation when anyone sends me new information or is researching a line. Some have been extended a bit further. There is alot of new information up and I am still correcting each line. Happy Hunting Martha
