Strong is probably a descendant of Mastin Strong, who died in Randolph Co., AL, in 1866. Following is the ancestry of Mastin Strong and the probable ancestry of Samuel D. Strong. 1. John Strong of St. Peter's Parish, probably New Kent Co., VA, was probably the headright claimed by Robert Hughes of New Kent Co., VA, in a 1682 grant. No records of John Strong have been found after the 1703 christening (infant baptism) of his son, George Strong. His wife has not been identified. They likely died in St. Paul's Parish, New Kent or Hanover County, VA. 2. John Strong, Jr., born 1698, St. Peter's Parish, VA; died St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA, by 1751. His widow was probably the Mary Strong whose last record was in 1787 in Goochland Co., VA, when she appeared to be residing with he son, John Strong, III. 3. Martin Strong, born about 1725-1730, probably St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA, was the most probable husband of Ann Stanley, daughter of John Stanley, "the eldest", of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. Ann married a Mr. Strong, a non-Quaker, about 1753 or 1754, and was excommunicated from the Cedar Creek Friends Meeting for doing so. Martin appears to have died in Hanover County about 1780, as in 1781 Ann Strong was residing in Goochland Co., VA, near several Strong in-laws, and was the apparent head of her household. Her last record was in 1803, but she possibly relocated to Buckingham Co., VA, and was the elderly woman residing with her son, John Strong, there in 1810. About 1797, Ann Strong with her son, Mastin Strong, entered into a seven year "share-cropper" lease in Goochland Co., VA. 4. Mastin Strong was born about 1774 when his parents were then apparently residents of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. After 1781 he resided in Goochland Co., VA, with his mother and siblings. He married in 1799 to Nancy East in Goochland Co., VA, but she apparently died soon after. About 1805 or 1806 he married, second, Rebecca, whose surname was apparently McCormack, of Buckingham Co., VA. They relocated to Roane Co., TN, where they were residing at the time of the War of 1812, in which Mastin served. Many years later Mastin Strong applied for and received military land bounty grants and after Mastin's death, Rebecca filed for a Widow's Pension based on Mastin's service. These records provide valuable information about the Mastin Strong family. Mastin resided in Roane Co., Jefferson Co., and Bradley Counties, TN, where he was in 1850. One of his sons, Samuel C. Strong, settled in Randolph County, AL, and Mastin took his military land grants there, also. Mastin relocated to the part of Randolph County, AL, that is now Cleburne County. The coordinates of Mastin's land show he was residing just north of the current line between Randolph and Cleburne Counties. Mastin died on 31 JAN 1866 and in 1870 his widow, Rebecca, was found in the home of an apparent daughter, Mrs. S. F. Horn, in Calhoun Co., AL, but Rebecca still listed her mailing address as Randolph County in her pension application. At the time of the 1830 census, Mastin and Rebecca Strong had 10 persons under the age of 30 in their household. Most of Mastin's and Rebecca's children have not been identified. 5. Samuel C. Strong was probably born about 1810 in Roane Co., TN. He said he had three sisters who were older than he (who have not been identified). His census reports in Randolph Co., AL, indicated eleven children, two of whom were reported to have relocated to Erath County, Texas, in the 1890s. The wife of Samuel C. Strong was Sarah Morrison. 6. Thomas Jeffeson Strong and George Washington Strong reportedly relocated to Erath Co., TX, in the 1890s, so one of them is the likely father of Samuel David Strong. George W. Strong, born about NOV 1857 was enumerated on the 1880 census in Tallapoosa Co., AL, and the 1900 census of Shelby Co., AL, thus he could not have been in Erath Co., TX, in 1900, as alleged. No one named Samuel David Strong or S. D. Strong was found on the 1870 census of Randolph Co. or Cleburne Co., AL. A review of Strongs found on the 1880 soundex residing in Cleburne, Tallapoosa, and Shelby Counties, Alabama, did not locate a Samuel Strong or male named S. D. Strong. All Strong households in Alabama in 1880 were not checked. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records of Strongs residing in Erath County, Texas, should be abstracted in a search for the parents and grandparents of Samuel David Strong. A person named "Sam David Strong" died in Falls Co., TX, on 1 MAR 1943, according to Texas Death Certificate # 12028. The death certificate should state the parents of the deceased. I recommend that a copy of this death certificate be obtained from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Texas Department of Health, 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, Texas 78756. 3. Dave, I write to you with much joy and great excitement!! I have, at long last, tied my lonely seafaring James Strang into the family of the above referenced Jean D'Estreng!! Here's how the direct lineage goes... [Note: Most of the following information comes from "The Strangs of Westchester" written by Charles Alfred Strange - an amazingly detailed and thorough work which may prove useful to others researching these lines.] 1. Jean D'Estreng b. abt 1598 2. Henry D'Estreng b. abt 1620 d. aft 1680 m. Marie BABAULT 3. Daniel Streing b. between 1654-1656 d. 1707, Rye,Weschester,New York m. Charlotte Le MAISTRE abt 03 Aug 1680 These are the immigrant ancestors having feld France for London and the New York as Huguenots. A NOTE ABOUT SURNAME SPELLINGS: It has been remarked that "the variations that certain Frenchmen of the seventeenth century enjoyed in teh spelling of their surnames. In the Paris documents concerning them, Daniel and his brother Jacques indulged in this caprice, the name being signed or appearing variously as String, Streng, Streing, Straing, Strain, and even Estrain and Estrang. In America however, Daniel's numerous surviving signatures are all written Streing, Although his wife's signature on her will is clearly Strieng. Daniel's sons spelled the name as both Streing and Straing. The thrid generation, as of the 1740s, agreed upon Strang, and, with few exceptions - such as that of the writer's (Charles Alfred Strange) family - it has been Strang ever since." 4. Daniel Streing b. abt 1692 prob. in New Rochelle, New York d. 1741 in either White Plains or Cortlandt, NY m. Phebe PURDY 5. James Strang b. 09 Sep 1804 in St. John, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada d. 29 Nov 1870 in Charlotte Co., New Brunswick This is my 4x grt grandfather who I have been searching for since October 1996. I still have some further work to putting together the full story on his family. He appears to have had two wives, m. 1st Jane Connick d/o Samuel There were children from this union that I still need to uncover. m. 2nd Margaret < > abt 1835-36 >From census information, it appears that John Fielden (my 3x grt grandpa) and his sister Sarah were the only two children of this union. 3. Martha and All, Isn't that something! To think of being a double Strong. How many Double Strongs are there out there. When I visited with my Aunt Katherine Strong Collins last month she was remembering how "My Father know all of his relatives". She went on to said, they as children were made to go outside while the adults talked. Let this be a lesson to us, she now does not remember her ancestors, because children were to be seen not heard! Martha, Your effort on the Four Generations has been such a large success. It is a work you can be proud of for years to come. We the descendants of John Sronge, Chard, Somerset England, later Northampton, MA THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the beautiful work! After much checking I find only one error on the whole web site. I find the last photograph was taken by my eldest daughter Elizabeth Ann Gilbert Foreman (Lisa). 2. Dear Jim, I will do some checking I had some Nova Scotia addresses. I think David Scranton went to Nova Scotia way before 1790C.If you figure that the girls married aroung the age of 10 They would all have m. in the 1770's The way the letter is written Thomas had tried sending other letters but didn't think they had gotten through. I would be willing to share info with you if you would like. We are looking forward to the 125th reunion in the year 2000. 3. Hello All, I am writing this to Martha and cc STRONG-L for one reason , hoping someone will reply with more information on the subject. The date of marriage of Nathan Strong and Eunice Chalker is 1790 Durham, CT. I remember seeing it in a book somewhere, but did not write it down for reference. The letter written by Thomas, Jr. in 1792 has Eunice and child in Durham, CT. and Dewight write in his book Vol. 1 page 257 of Nathan "removed about 1794-5, to Whitestown, Oneida Co., N.Y.," Henry C. 4/20/1791 (the child of the letter), Phebe 7/10/1792 and Charles born 4/6/1793 in Durham, CT. The letter was written 4/8/1792, Phebe was born 7/10/1792. Thomas said Nathan departed February last on April 8, 1792, that would mean he left for NY in February 1792. It this not correct? After Charles was old enough to travel they left to settle on Oneida Co., NY. It is my understanding most moves where made in the early Spring, so the planting of crops could be done and crops grown before winter. I did not read that Thomas did not know of the N & E's wedding. Just that "he (Nathan) married Eunice". I may have missed something I should have read. The Brother Coe he write of is Simeon Coe husband of Eunice Strong sister of Thomas and Nathan. I think Thomas was implying that David Scranton was part of the Strong in his sentence, "The rest of our family and friends sends their regrades to you" I still believe he married one of the Daughters of Thomas and Phebe Strong. I am sending the letter so it can be read with this note. Jim THE LETTER "To Capt. David Scrantom at Manchester in Novascotia with Care and Speed Dear Brother and Sister my regards to you and ures. I inform you that I am in good health and hope this will find you in joying the same blessing through Divine goodness. Father and sisters are well and the rest of our family and friends sends their regards to you and tis a (nelth?) time among us Brother. Nathan has gone to the Great Sea if this is a place unnone to you tis about two hundred thirty or forty miles west ward of Albany he went from home the first of February last and dont expect to be back till next winter. Telch Crane Elam Crane with there wives & Reubon Bishob are gone to the same place but Nathans wife and child is not gone he married Eunisse Chalder. Brother Coe is gone with his family to "Whites Town" about one hundred miles west of Albany up the Mohawk River so that our Family is Scattering up and down the World so that I think it not very likely that we shall ever meet to gether again in this World may we be have so as to Meet in that world above to sing anthimes of praise through a never ending Etirnity the winter was pretty Severe here for about two months but the first of March it began to thaw. Since thats it is been as fine a seeson as I ever new we have not received Nor west blasts of wind since nature is puting on her Smiling countenance. We have a prospect of a forward Spring. I have wrote a number of times to you but most of the letters have failed (letter torn here) of them have returned but that must not discourage from writing there being no other way of conversing with our loved ones at distance & wish to you to rite as often as opportunity presents. I wish you to make a visit here to see us and consider whether it is not better to return to this part of the world than stay in that cold country how ever that must be left to your Judgement our folks have sent you two brown woolen gowns & a peese of worsted cloth with few (illegible) things their is but little news here there is troops raising to go against the Indians on the western fronttears Page Two of Letter To subscribe my self your affectionate Friend and Brother Thomas Strong Jun. 2. Dear Jim and all, Nathan and Eunice m. 1790 Henry b. Apr./ 1791 Nathan goes departs Feb. 1792 Thomas writes letter to the Scrantons Apr. 1792 and informs them of how the family is and informs them of the marriage of Nathan and birth of Henry, calling them brother and sister. Phebe b. Jul. 1792 Charles born Apr. 1793. Dwight writes Nathan and family remove 1794- 1795 >From these dates Nathan may have come and gone and gotten the place ready for his family before bringing them. That was not an uncommon occurence. It may have taken him awhile to find what he was looking for. David Scranton, m. ______Strong bef. 1790 and goes to Manchester Nova Scotia before the marriage of Nathan and Eunice. Thomas doesn't mention marriage of Eunice Strong to Simeon Coe, he just calls Simeon brother Coe which makes it sound like the Scantons know who he is, Eunice and Simeon were m. 1774. So the Scrantons left after 1774 and bef. 1790. Jim have you checked to see if David Scranton could have been a Loyalist in the Revolution. Revolution 1775 - 1783 treaty was signed. As I remember it Loyalist left into the 1790's. I think the United Empire Loyalist have a websight and you might find something there or Bill might be able to help. Martha

    3. Hello All, I recently posted an example of the STRONG coat of arms at my web site at < http://home.earthlink.net/~lkstrong/ >. Of course it's only an "artistic representation" from one of those "heraldry" stores at the mall. But, it's still interesting to see. It is very similar to the copy found at the SFAA web site < http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4715/ >. Charles "Chaz" Strong [email protected] (home) [email protected] (work)
