Thanks Thanks Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure your Samuel was the same man as mine. I am trying to find the Strong/Grimes connection, at this time I have no further on William Strong but I do know that Gabriel W. Grimes had a neighbor in 1870 Oglethorpe county GA named William Strong who was a black man. I would have thought it was "THE" William Strong of which my Gabriel was guardian. It would be hard for me to believe it is so, since this William cannot read or write. His birthdate according to this was 1828 which would be the death year as his father. He also has a daughter named Polly. hmmmm. Interesting. The strange thing is that Gabriel was a single man and was left guardian to a child possible very young. I wonder why Samuel would leave a child to a single man and not his sister or brothers to look after. He would have to be related somehow, I just don't get it. I'm rattling as I know you don't have the answers to this. "L" Oh well, I'll keep you posted as to what I find out on William Strong. If you'd like to know the other family members of the above William, please let me know as I'm not sure it is the same, though very strange that he is next door to Gabriel. Thanks Bob, Kathy Kathleen, GA (really) ========================================================= There were at least three different Strong families in the early records of Oglethorpe County. 1. John Strong, formerly of Hanover, Goochland, and Campbell Co., VA; on 1805 land lottery of Clarke Co., GA. 2. Samuel Strong, formerly of Maryland? and Lunenburg Co., VA; on 1805 land lottery of Oglethorpe Co., GA. 3. William Strong, formerly of Rockingham Co., NC; on 1805 land lottery of Oglethorpe Co., GA. In addition there were three other William Strongs on the 1805 land lottery in Clarke Co., GA: (1.) William Strong, Sr., formerly of Hanover, Goochland, and Buckingham Co., VA, died 1816, Clarke County, and (2.) his son, William (E.?) Strong, Jr., called "Esquire" in 1805, of same, died 1810, Clarke County; and (3.) William J. (?) Strong, III, called "Jr." in 1805, died 1828, Clarke Co., GA. Each died testate. Jane Strong married (1.) Samuel Bridgewater, who was apparently killed in the War of 1812. Jane Strong Bridgewater, daughter of William Strong, Sr., married in Clarke Co., GA, on 16 NOV 1815 to (2.) William Montford Stokes, son of William Stokes, whose will was signed 1794, Elbert Co., GA, and recorded in 1796. Peggy Stokes, daughter of William Stokes, married before 1794 to William Strong, Jr., Esquire. Sarah Stokes married __?__ Grimes. Sarah Stokes Grimes was apparently the mother of Elizabeth Grimes. So here is a Strong - Grimes connection in the Stokes family. The order of these two marriages of Jane Strong is proved by the wills of Jane Strong's brother, William, below (1810) , and the wills of her parents, William Strong (dated 1816) and Frances Johnson Strong (dated 1828), Jane Strong married 3rd to Rev. Humphrey Posey and they resided Coweta Co., GA. LWT of William Strong, Jr., died 1810, Clarke Co., GA, recorded in Will Book A, page 38. Wife: Peggy [Stokes] Sons: William, Elijah, Montford, George Jackson, John, James Madison Daughter: Rachel [wife of Jack F. Cocke] Grandson: William Cocke Sister: Jane Bridgewater [Jane Strong Bridgewater] LWT of William J. Strong [III], died 1828, Clarke Co., GA, recorded in Will Book B, page 75. Wife: Sallie Brothers: Elijah, Montford (deceased), George J., James M. Sister: Sallie Moffett So this William Strong, III, apparently had no children who survived him. LWT of Montford Strong, d. 1827, Will Book A, p. 59: Wife, not named. She was pregnant at time of marriage, he claimed. He denied he was the father and disinherited her and her child. Brothers: George J. of Alabama, William J., James Madison Brother-in-law: Gabriel A. Moffett of Athens, GA. Clarke Co., GA, Administrators and Guardians Bonds, 16 APR 1824: G. A. Moffett, guardian of "Mumford" Strong, "idiot". Surety: Christopher Bowen. This record establishes that Montford Strong married after 1824 and before 1827, and that he was probably "mentally retarded". Oglethorpe Co., GA, marriage records indicate that "Mumford" Strong and Nancy Thomas were married there on 23 APR 1824. So if she was pregnant at that time, her child was born in 1824 or 1825. Check the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery to see where Montford Strong was residing at that time, as he was a fortunate drawer. His will indicated he was residing in Clarke County. I would surmise from the above records that William Strong of Oglethorpe Co., GA, in 1850 and 1860 was possibly the son of the widow of Montford Strong. Further research should be done in the records of Clarke Co., GA, and Oglethorpe Co., GA, to attempt to either prove or refute this conclusion. It should be noted there were no Strong households in Oglethorpe Co., GA, in 1840. William Strong on the 1850 census of Oglethorpe County, GA, 66th Division [Land District?], Dwelling 771, was age 24, or born about 1826, and possessed real estate valued at $30,000. He is likely the William Strong of your interest. Note that this William Strong was a minor in 1840. 1860 census of Oglethorpe Co., GA, Millstone Post Office, 238th Land District: William Strong, age 34, real estate valued at $16,400 and personal property valued at $58, 040. Same person as on 1850 census. Also on this census was a Walter W. Strong [or Stroud], age 23 years, born GA. In the Jobe B. Buttes' household were Milly (?) Strong, age 2, female, and Jobe Strong, age 1, male. I noted no race on these records so I must assume the race was "White". This William Strong appeared to be single in both 1850 and 1860. Were Milly and Jobe Strong his children? Check the 1860 Mortality Schedule of Oglethorpe Co., GA, for a Mrs. Strong who died in 1859-1860. >From the records outlined above, Montford Strong was a nephew of Mrs. Sarah Stokes Grimes. Perhaps this will assist you in your study of the Grimes and Strong connection in Oglethorpe Co., GA. You now have two theories about the parents of William Strong of Oglethorpe Co., GA, in 1850 and 1860: (1.) Samuel and Ann Strong and (2.) Nancy Thomas Strong, wife of Montford Strong. Of these two. the latter family had a Grimes connection through the Stokes family. Any additional information you can provide about this William Strong in Oglethorpe Co., GA, will be appreciated. I am interested in a Samuel Strong of Oglethorpe County who named Gabriel W. Grimes (my 3 gr granfather b. 1796-1799)) of Oglethorpe County as guardian to his son William Strong in 1840. Here is how it reads. -GA-Oglethorpe County Know all men by these presents that we Gabriel W. Grimes, Davis Evans, Rolly Hopper, Washington Grimes, william Grimes and Thos B. ANthony {seal} William Grimes {seal} Rendered this 3rd day of March 1840 Henry Brittain CEO? --------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder might you know anything of these William (b. approx 1830) and Samuel Strong (poss. born before 1790). I don't have any other information at this time. I feel that Samuel Strong and my Gabriel were related somehow. Do you have any Grimes in your data? My Gabriel's father was also of Hanover County, VA. I also wonder if you have any Thompsons in your data. Thanks for any leads. Merry Christmas Kathy =========================================================== This is a brief preliminary reply to your inquiry. I recommend you search the messages for the Strong Mail List that are archived on the Rootsweb server, using the search words "Samuel and Oglethorpe and GA", without the quotation marks. You begin your search at this URL, where you enter the name of the Mail List: "Strong". The search words are then entered on the second page and you must repeat the search for each calendar year. http://newsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl My recollection is that Rev. Samuel Strong was purported to have been born in Maryland. He spent a few years in Lunenburg Co., VA, before he moved on to Oglethorpe Co., GA. He was the father of Christopher Billups Strong, who went back to Cumberland Co., VA, to study law, married a Miss Woodson there, and then returned to Georgia to practice law, becoming a Justice. Samuel Strong died in Oglethorpe Co., GA, and his 1828 will is filed in Oglethorpe Co., GA, Will Book A, Page 57. The first Mrs. Samuel Strong, Martha DeGraffenried, obviously died prior to 29 JUL 1810 when Rev. Samuel Strong of Oglethorpe Co., GA, married Caty Dunn of Columbia County, GA. Rev. Samuel Strong may have married a third time on 12 JAN 1818 to "Oney" [Anney?] Martin. Another researcher's account says "Inez" Martin. I suspect that Miss Martin was the mother of William Strong. Ann Strong was named as the wife and widow of Samuel Strong in his will, written 3 JUL 1828. Children: Christopher B. Strong, Polly Strong , W. Easley Strong [or Polly W. Easley?], and William Strong. Creed Taylor Strong was probably another son but was not named in the will abstract that I am looking at. You should obtain a photocopy of the will of Samuel Strong from the Georgia State Archives or the Oglethorpe Co., GA, Clerk of Courts, as there may be errors in the abstract. There is an account of Samuel Strong and his descendants, as known in 1983, in James Robert Rolff's out of print book: THE STRONG FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND OTHER SOUTHERN STATES. (c) the compiler, whose current E-Mail address is <[email protected]>. See Chapter 20, Pages 412-425. You might be able to obtain this book via interlibrary loan. Nothing is included about William Strong and his descendants. Tell Mr. Rolff where your reside and he can probably tell you a library near you that has a copy of his book. I would appreciate learning more about William Strong and his descendants from you. Please include your full name and your location in future correspondence. I don't have any additional information about the Grimes family. Happy Holidays to you and yours, also! Bob Strong Robert T. Strong, Jr. 119 Mystic Way Madison, Al 35757-8801
Hi all. I'm new to the list and I am hoping to find out how these Strongs may be related to my 3rd gr.grndfthr Gabriel W. Grimes b. 1796-1799 who lived and died in Oglethorpe county GA. Gabriel was named as the guardian of William Strong, orphan of Samuel STRONG (also of Oglethorpe place of birth unknown), in March 1840. Does anyone have these Strongs in their data and possibly how related to any GRIMES. Thanks for any leads and Merry Christmas. From: "JoAnn Potter" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: STRONG Research Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 18:09:00 -0700 I am searching for information on Adam S. STRONG b. I checked the Strong books I have on hand and did not find a reference to him. A family of Strongs settled in Guilford / Rockingham County about the time of the Revolutionary War and propogated. Many had moved on to Scott Co., VA, and Kentucky and Tennessee before 1850. There are a number of descendants of the Strongs of Rockingham Co., NC, on the Strong Mail List. A copy of your message and my reply is being sent to the Strong Mail List. Perhaps someone there will be able to assist you. You are advised to search the Strong Mail List archived messages for "Adam and Strong and TX", without the quotation marks. Go to this URL to start your search, enter the name of the Mail List, e.g., Strong, then enter your search words on the next page. You must repeat the search for each of three calendar years. Then you might want to repeat the cylcle again using "NC" rather than "TX". Sometimes it is easier to search for the wife's name. A search for "Godsey" might get the job done nicely. You can subscribe to any of the Rootsweb surname or regional lists online at this URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/surnames/index.html There are several web sites that are dedicated to Strong Family research. You will find hot links to these other sites on my Links page. Check especially on William L. Here is the URL for IFF: http://www.familytreemaker.com/ifftop.html You might want to do a search on the Internet using one or a combination of the "crawler" search programs. Here is my favorite parallel [simultaneous] search program, called Meta-Crawler. http://www.metacrawler.com You are probably aware of the USGenWeb searches, but I will include it here for the benefit of anyone on the Strong Mail List who may not be familiar with it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Good luck in you search. Hello Jim: If David Scranton came to Canada in 1790 it is not likely that he was a United Empire Loyalist as defined by our Association, since to qualify he would have had to "join the Royal Standard" before 1783. Regrettably we do not have staff to do genealogical research, so I am afraid that we cannot help you. I would suggest that you try and contact a Nova Scotia Genealogical Society. Loyally yours Edward Scott UE I sent this for all to read. Just another dead end. Jim

Jonathan; In addition to being found at the Sfaa Webpage, information is included in Vol. 3 of the update books put out by Sfaa on the descendants of Elder John Strong. (P. 173). It looks like Caleb Strong and Zerviah Clark had 3 girls and a boy - Caleb Jr. Information provided to me by Barbara Kirkpatrick (thanks again Barbara!) lists the children of Caleb Jr. and his wife Amy Lee as Eunice, Polly, Patrick, Caleb, Lemuel, Lydia, Betsy, Lucy, Chauncey, Alfred, Sally, Harvey and William. Please post another message to our mailing list including your connection to Caleb and/or more specific info on your search. Are you a descendant? Which of Caleb Jr.'s children? Telling us about your family may help another searcher make a connection and it helps us to help you find what you are looking for. Best of luck. Lindsey DiCosola [email protected]
