My grandmother's name was Vella Straub and she had 1 brother, Elmer, and 3 sisters, Lillian, Florence and Elva. They grew up in Cedar County near Tipton. Vella's dad, Rev. Albert William Straub was a farmer and a United Brethren (Methodist) minister. He was killed in a horrible car crash with a rock truck in 1948. Albert's father was William Straub who was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada in 1854. His natural father died when he was an infant and he came to Scott County, Iowa with his mother when he was 5. He was adopted by a (maternal?) uncle, Albert Straub. We think his original name may have been Secor or Secord. William was a teenager when they moved to Sweetland Township in Muscatine County. He married Mary Ellen Bond and they moved to Cedar County. Their children's names were Albert William (my great-grandfather), Elsie, Tolbert and George. Most are buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton, Iowa. Rita Gervais
