Boy are you lucky! I don't know if my wife could have moved me with a stick of dynamite! I would give a lot to have stumbled across such a find as that! My Grandfather, Frederick Whistler Stroup was born in Union County,PA in 1844. I don't have any idea if he was born a 'Stroup' or a 'Straub', I have been trying to unlock that mystery for a long time now. I do know that he later (at age almost 17) enlisted in the Indiana Infantry (Reserve) in 1861 and was discharged in 1865 after being wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro and taken prisoner. He later was married in Michigan and then they wound up in Kansas where I was born. It's so funny that I can (almost) trace his every step after he enlisted at Elkhart IN, but not a thing before.... Good Luck in your Search and I hope that someday you will be able to go back and spend some more time in PA. Francis D. On our way back | to Ontario we stopped close to where my STRAUB ancestors lived in | Pennsylvania. My wife has no interest in genealogy, so I did not spend | much time with my distraction. | | My ancestor, Elizabeth STRAUB was born in 1838 in Frosty Valley, Pine Twp, | Columbia County, PA. Her father was Adam, her mother was Mary GRUBER. I | was curious because I'd found a STRAUB church listed in Mahoning Twp, | Montour County, PA, which is next to Columbia County. Directions are | difficult because of the hills, but after getting directions, I think I was | going NE from Danville, Montour County, came to a stop sign, turned right | onto Frosty Valley Road and the STRAUB Lutheran Church was immediately on | my right. The church is still being used, it was built in the 1840's, I | don't know if it is the original structure, the pastor lives across the | road, but both buildings were locked, so I couldn't ask questions. | | There aren't many older gravestones. The only STRAUB connection I found was | of Henry STROUP d. 1-26-1873 aged 68 years, 11 months, 28 days and his wife | Lydia d. 2-22-1869 aged 59 years, 5 months, 18 days. I don't know anything | else about this Henry. In the 1820 census for Mahoning Twp, there's an | Adam STRAUB b. about 1775 and a Joseph STRAUB b. between 1776-1794. Adam | is still listed in the 1830 census but Jospeh is not. Among the older | gravestones are the families BROBST (from Lehigh County), and SIDLER (Maybe | SEIDLER or SITTLER). If anyone has more information on these people I | would be most pleased to receive it. | | Garry | | | ==== STRAUB Mailing List ==== | To find GenConnect country, state, or county boards, | go to the "World Visitor Center" at | http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/qindex.html | |
