My name is Sue Steward. My husband's great grandfather was Sopharus "Phares/Pharus" Straub, born in Freeburg (Snyder County), PA 13 Sep 1858. He died 2 Feb 1944 in Halsey (Linn County), Oregon. He married Margaret "Maggie" Hoffer also from Snyder County, PA. My only source for the birthplace is family tradition and his death certificate which lists his birthplace (the information was provided by his wife, Maggie). The only information I had on him was that his father was Samuel Straub and Sarah Mains. Last Dec I put a query on the List and Jim Burnell sent me information on the 1860 Snyder County census showing Samuel (age 21), Sarah (age 22) and Pharus (1 year-old) Jim also indicated that it appears that Samuel was the son of Isaac and Sophia Straub and gave me information from the 1850 Union County, Washington Twp census: Isaac (31) Sophia (33) Eli (10), Samuel (9), George (6), Sussanah (4) and Matilda (1). I visited PA this summer with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. We went to Freeburg and looked around. Walked through cemeteries looking for Straubs. Then went to Selinsgrove to the public library and did some checking but didn't come up with much, I would have spent more time at the library but my mother-in-law (granddaughter of Sopharus Straub) is 88 years old and was tiring. I would appreciate any help and any information on this line. Sue Steward (ssteward@ccountry.net)
